I find most inspiration in the great Percussionists like Glen Velez or Helge Norbakken, the fantastic sounds, the breath and flow they got, the ethnic rhythm patterns, the complex polyrhythmic nets they are weaving, and their attitude of serving the music. That's sheer love in action. And taking that to the drumset for me is the new dimension and challenge - not going even faster. It like the difference between a dancer and a runner, or between a poet and a political speaker.

Dennis Chambers somehow manages to me, to get the drums to sound the best. He's the reason I started to listen to jazz. The album Petite Blonde was the first and still one of the best CD's I've ever bought. The entire band in this live in Germany album are simply perfect. Even today I listen to that disc in absolute amazement. If you don't have it I highly recommend it. Green front cover.

Every drummer looks up to Buddy Rich, no matter what they play. People can match his skill {Dave Weckl, the greatest living drummer}, but not his greatness. It's all relative to their eras, like how there are better boxers today, but Ali is still the greatest based on what he did at the time.

Chambers is the greatest funk drummer of all time, BTW. Royster Jr. has been his protege for a while.
