Back when I was a teenager, Before I knew about fermenting/sterilizing or drying them, I strained and rinsed some seeds out of a fresh tomato. Then I just stuck them in the dirt. For 3 weeks, nothing happened, then all of a sudden, they suddenly sprouted up! lol. But now I do it "the right way". I've also been told that fermenting them is to "age" or "mature" the seeds, because in nature, the fruit has to rot and die before its seeds to be fertile.
If you sqeeze the seeds in a glass jar and add some water it waill ferment over a period of a few days. Every day give them a little shake. After they get a littl emoldy and very stinky you rinse them and then place on paper plate to dry thoroughly. That goo that the seeds are incased, is to actually stop them from germinating. Once they ferment and are rinsed clean they germinate a lot quicker.
Awesome! Thanks so much, you answered my question perfectly! We are getting our garden ready for planting now, and if we like the tomatoes from this year I will be saving the seeds for next year. The paper towel is very clever!
