Man, the way Shawn hits those 16 balls one after the other so crisp!! Absolutely inspiring!! Just wish I could get my swing so good, I'm a 10 handicap and been stuck there for the past 12 months :-(
Shawn - in the perpetual motion drill do you stay "centered", or do you use a "head behind ball" tilt. If you are centered, how does this relate to a normal swing - ie do you still recommend a tilt at address in the full swing? Thanks.

If you don't know now you know. Long story short. Been hitting poorly last two months. I watch your vids when I'm in a funk. Saturday couldn't hit the ball at all I followed the instructions in this vid Wednesday shot my best round ever. Clemens you are the real deal. I feel as if I owe you some cash. I want to buy your DVD just to support what you do. Your analogies are top notch!
Shawn, you always demonstrate practice swinging the arms and the club back and forth as if it should be second nature to us. We're here to learn how to swing the arms and club back and forth, simply demonstrating it and saying the arms fall isn't helping me. Can you break it down please? What are the hands, arms and wrists doing. When, where and how do they rotate for example.
@mebagga I have all kinds of videos for this; just type in "golf pro lesson..." then the subject like "arm motion" or "wrist hinge" or "leg and footwork"...if you get my new 5 disc dvd series, you will see everything in priority sequence with 2 different camera angles; incredibly thorough! Shawn
incredibly intuitive and practical ... your "common sense" approach is a refreshment ... you are truly one of a kind
Question: I keep hitting fat shots, about 1-3 inches behind the ball ... when i do this drill, about 25% of my swings hit behind the ball .... any thoughts?
Very humbling comment; thank you very much; but it is funny how you mention the very same guys who have helped in understanding half the equations of the golf swing! The other would be Da Vinci with his studies of the human body! I realized a long time ago how to bring them together in golf and continue to find better ways to communicate the feel of it; back to the lab! :)
it's quite interesting to see this drill. several years ago i would obsessively video tape my swing, and i noticed when i took my practice swings without stopping my swing stayed on plane, unlike my actual swings. so then my goal was to replicate the feeling i was getting during those "nonstop" swings.
it's nice to see there was some merit in my little discovery ;)
When I try this drill I find it difficult to hit the same spot on the ground. I'm guessing it's because I'm trying to hit it. Where should my focus be or what is the main thought here to keep the swing plane intact? Thanks.
u just need practice. keep doing it. and in no time you will be hitting the right spot. try to concentrate on your swing motion initailly than where you hit on the ground. once the swing is groved it wil come automatically
Same focus as in the "golf pro lesson swing plane" video and you can check out the "Golf Pro Lesson timing and tempo update" and "bilateral Golf swing" videos too;
Awesome drill, I've been trying the perp. motion thing in my backyard and started hitting the ball much straighter. Thanks again Shawn, from Stonington, CT
hi shawn from germany. still snow here. waiting for spring. Question: Worked with the perp-drill and its really fantastic. feels a bit strange but the result is unbelieveable! doing this drill is a very steady movement. there is no time to worry about the movement of the arms, hands, hips etc. it is working by its own. BUT: to speed up, is it really only the "push the kids swing-analogy"? I suspect that its very hard to speed up in this short-termed time period... thanks from germany!
Jim Flick has referred to this drill on Golf Channel. I felt worn out just watching you go through those 16? balls!
Question: How far apart are those balls?
When I play my sand iron I feel like I take too much divot. Should I be skimming or coming in flatter. I may have a mental block with my lofted irons to 7iron.
I am a 13 HC'er. I came across your videos the other day and I'm really enjoying them. Very informative. Do you have any recommendations on which order to go through them all?
This is why I came out with my DVD; it has all the important aspects of technique and training in order of importance and disc 3 has all the shots executed on course from Driver to putter; 4 hours on 3 discs all filmed from scratch! For $40.00 it is a real gift and you will enjoy it very much. Just go to the "My DVD" page on my website; Shawn
This is the BEST drill to find your tempo. Correct tempo will transform your swing! Don't ignore this drill. It will eat balls quickly but is well worth it. Shawn knows what he's talking about!
I'm becoming a fan of your method of instruction. After watching many of your videos I can see a lot of great simplistic drills which I attempt to copy. However because video is a 2 dimesional medium I can't walk around you to check things - I don't see how far hips turn, shoulders turn or the swing path etc. Could you do a video with the camera mounted several feet above you, so that it captures all of these things?
What you want to do is combine this drill with the "Braced Tilt", "Braced Tilt part 2", "Proper spine tilt" and "Great driver tip" videos; they are all on the "You Tube Shawn" page of my website...Thanks for the question and you will see exactly what has been going on through those 4 vids;
Another sweet lesson Shawn! Is there a universal name for this drill among teaching pros? Also, would it be advisable to practice my low knockdown shot in this manner?
Good question! I call it the perpetual motion drill (Or Perp drill) which I have been using for well over a decade and have not seen many others refer to this drill; the use of it with regards to hitting balls is the "Half Happy Gilmore" drill; :)
And yes, you can adapt it to just about any aspect of your swing, short game and putting, including knock down shots! Thanks for the comment and questions, Shawn
Excellent video like always Shawnsky! I've found that patience is a KEY part of the perpetual swing. If I speed up from the top I get pulls hooks and some hosel shots. But when I let the club fall and assist the club halfway down...BANG!...what a solid and effortless hit. Definitely need to be patient!!
DONT READ THIS! In 1997 a girl called lauren was walikng in a forest and then a she just dissapeared no one ever found her untill 2000 when a yoing girl called Mary found her body and markings on her chest saying: I wasnt pretty enough" and now you have read this she will appear in your mirror saying your not pretty enough and kill you. by the way the girl called mary died shortly after. Hi Shawn. Great video. I have your DVD, and it along with your videos have really helped my game. One question though. I feel that if I rush my down swing from the top, I pull the ball. If I am patient and speed up as the club falls from the top, the ball goes straight. Any other reasons for pulls? PS-Can we get a more driver specific video? Thanks Ray- Greenville SC
Yes, you can pull a bunch of different ways; the other two ways can be found on my "Golf Pro Lesson Tilted Spirale" and "Golf Pro Lesson Be a Solid Ball Striker"; they are on my "you tube Shawn" page of my website...Thanks for the comment and question and I will have a nice Driver Video coming soon; Shawn
hello Shawn. Your lesson did help me a lot. 2 weeks ago , I told you my games average around 110 during the past few months. After your one lesson, i shot 88 at RH golf club. I felt great and gained back my confidence. thanks. Lana
I've been told that I'm spending too much time over the ball after setting up. Kinda makes sense because If i quicken things up and feel 'lighter' over the ball it tends to free up my wrists as i'm not so tense. Any ideas on speeding up my whole routine ?
Yes! Your routine must be well rehearsed and stay well below 40 seconds; 25 seconds is good. I have 2 videos for this: "Golf Pro Lesson Routine", "golf Pro lesson Pinehurst 100th episode" and "Takeaway and starting the swing" is very important to understand so you do not allow the body to be still before you swing; thanks for the comment! Shawn
Show off!!! JK. Amazing, Shawn you continue to make me sick! Couple quick questions... Is there an optimal iron for you perpetual motion drill??? In that walking drill, it seemed as if you weren't hitting all the balls towards the same target. Correct? Last one, in my swing (right-handed) I get somewhat of a push with my left arm during the takeaway and a pull with my right arm during the downswing sensation. Is this completely obtuse??? Thanks.
In an Ideal world, the balls would end up lined up the same way on the green...:) As far as your sensation with the left and right, I can see it but want to make sure the feel is in conjunction with your rib cage/pelvis getting out of the way in each direction; Thanks for the comment! Shawn
Depends if you are properly braced into your forward side through impact; have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson Tilted Spirale" video to make sure you are centered in the swing...
You will find it on the "you tube Shawn" page of my website along with all the others...Thanks for the comment! Shawn
