Ahh! We spent EIGHT days in Kota Kinabalu and didn't go climb the mountain! Sigh. Then I got sick in Brunei for another week. Looks like you guys had a blast, though! :-D
Ooh awesome climb. :) I have yet to summit - we only made it as far as Laban Rata because it rained heavily the night we were due to continue the climb, and they closed the summit. :( Better luck next time I guess! congratulations to you and your group!
i did that climb in nov last year. was pretty full on...the sight of those stairs still scare me! i remember every stage kina weird seeing it on vid lol. was worth it though!
wow cant believe that u guys decided 2 take a toll at my hometown..hahah.. definetly i believe it was a great experience 4 u guys..hahah.. ooo u guys are making miss sabah more...lol
We stayed at the cabins farther up the mountain, not the main guesthouse where the restaurant is. It was a little farther of a walk, but cheaper. We ate at the main building and hiked up to sleep. I liked it, it was quiet and there was a hot shower. No heat in the building though and we had bunk beds, about 8 to a room. Hope this helps.
It was great. If you take your time on day one and drink plenty of water you will be fine. What a great experience for teenagers! Day two is all in the dark until you reach the summit for sunrise. I was glad about this because it would have been a scary climb if I could see anything. Bring warm clothes and if you have a headlamp it will be easier.
Oh another thing, don't leave too early on summit day. We left at about 3:30 am (i think) and we were an hour and a half early for sunrise. We froze and we are Canadian. I wish that I took along another (base layer) shirt to change into that was dry, because I was sweating on the way up. I also wish that we went to the hot springs afterward. We heard that they were cheesy so we didn't go, but I still wish that I did. Have a great time! Deb
Malaysia was federated in 16 September 1963. Even before Sabah was incorporated into Malaysia, the Philippines sent delegations to London reminding the British Crown that Sabah belonged to the Philippines.
In 1906 and in 1920, the United States formally reminded Great Britain that North Borneo did not belong to the Crown and was still part of the Sultanate of Sulu. However, the British did turn Sabah into a Crown leased Colony. The Philippine Constitution of 1941 states that the national territory of the Philippines included, among other things, "all other areas which belong to the Philippines on the basis of historical rights or legal claims."
In 1939, a court judgement on the claim had handed ownership of North Borneo to the heirs of the Sultanate prior to the formation of Malaysian federation in 1963. The judgment of Chief Justice C.F.C. Makaskie of the High Court of North Borneo in the civil suit filed by the late Dayang Dayang Hadji Piandao and eight other heirs of the Sultan of Sulu, including the famous Putlih (Princess) Tarhata Kiram, upheld the validity of the claim of the heirs.
key word in the agreement was "padjak," which has been translated by American, Dutch and Spanish linguists to mean "lease" or "arrendamiento." The agreement further states explicitly that the rights to the territory may not be transferred to a nation or another company without the sultan's express permission. In 1906 and in 1920, the United States formally reminded Great Britain that North Borneo did not belong to the Crown and was still part of the Sultanate of Sulu.
and later via the British North Borneo Company. Von Overbeck procured the necessary firearms and also paid the Muslim dignitary an annual sum equivalent to $5,000 ringgits
23 January 1878, in exchange for modern weapons with which to keep Spanish colonizers away from the Sulu archipelago, the ruler of Sulu, Sultan Jamalul Alam Kiram, leased the territory of North Borneo to Gustavus von Overbeck, an Austrian who was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire's consul-general in Hong Kong. This was accomplished via a trading company belonging to von Overbeck's british partner Alfred Dent,

Dont come to Sabah anymore, you and your people are not welcomed!

Love how you guys made the video!!! I have climbed that mountain twice and planning to go back with my wife in the near future!!! Thanks for sharing this awesome video!!!
I wish you had showed more of the mountain and less of the people. No offense to the poeple, but I watched the vid thinking I might see some more of the mountain. BTW, isn't there a glacier on Kinabalu? A small one? Or do I have that wrong?
Good job, but, Why would anyone want to climb a mountain in the dark just to see the sunrise? Better you climb in the light so you can see the beautiful scenery.
You get to see the beautiful scenery on the way down. Plus, there is a full day off descending ahead of you. And you can take your time and enjoy it better on the way down.
Great video; for anyone else climbing try and do the mesilau trail. Its much harder but its alot more beautiful than the sumit trail - plus theres virtually no tourists on it
i went on a school trip and we climbed up to 10.000 feet and then stayed there until like midnight in a lodge, in the night it was storming and when we started the trek to the peek it was really windy and very cold, ask me if u have any other questions :)
all i remember was knee pain for 2 days after the climb :)
