  • paulmurphy42 Hey Paul! That's corn transplanted from the ag department of a nearby high school. It looks like a full crop in the movie, actually it's about 5 or 6 rows shaped kind of like the letter "U." It's all movie magic. I think the close ups of him when the chemical is dropped were done in studio, but not sure.

  • Aw, remember this in my film class senior year, good times.

  • leslie nielsen did it better lol

  • Cary Grant was a great actor. For those who say negative things about him I think you are missing the point we should just see him for his acting and remember him for his films that was his job. Why pick at it and say he was this or that. What he did in his private life. Whatever he was or wasn't was his concern not ours.

  • I would like to have a vid of the art auction scene in which Cary jumps up and, in that inimitable voice, yells out "What if it's a fake?---How do we know it's not a fake?" " XXXdollars for THAT chromo??"

I thought it would be fun to attach the audio to videos of presentations of some of the phoney-baloney documents we get from the White House.

  • Great actor, great film. But I find it interesting that so few people stop to realize that this scene makes absolutely no sense. Why try to kill him this way? He's alone. Pull up in a car and shoot him. Done.

  • @plangentmusic You're right! This is a great and amazing film, and I have not many complaints about any of his brilliant films. It would make sense to "pull up and shoot him", obviously... but you have to think about the plot, as there is much more that hasn't been discovered yet. Plus, notice the pilot (or whoever) was shooting from the plane, so they weren't just trying to "run him over". Besides, it's unexpected for a crop duster turn around and try to kill him, it's the "Hitchcock surprise!"

  • @plangentmusic

The thing about Hitchcock is that whenever possible, he tries to use the setting. When Cary Grant is trapped in an auction, the only way to get out is by bidding. In Rear Window, the photographer uses a flash gun to fend off his attacker. In The 39 Steps, Robert Donat is captured in a music hall during a world's-smartest-man act and the only way to get out is to shout out a question that answers the entire plot of the movie. The list goes on.

  • My mom, born in 1954, always jokes about how she should've married Cary Grant instead of my actual father. She always watched his movies, particularly Charade and this, and this scene stands out very vividly from my childhood.

  • The only thing I don't like about this is at 1:21, his fall to the ground is really fake, he raised his left leg too high and for too long, but otherwise this is great, must of been thrilling for people back in 59.

  • @adrianlindsaylohan yeah the CGI wasn't as good back then :)

  • @adrianlindsaylohan it's still thrilling now

  • @pureindian407 of course

  • 6 people don't know anything about acting

  • This is one of the most exciting movie scenes in the history of film

  • 55 years old... surely no one could be that attractive at THAT age!

... wait, it's Cary Grant, he can do anything.

  • this is one of those scenes that youve seen in many places and you never knew what it was from until now

  • RUN FOREST, RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNN

  • Cary Grant was a ridiculous actor, he could not act at all.

  • They filmed this scene in a remote area about 20 miles northwest of a little town in California called Wasco. I lived on a small farm a mile from the set. We were out there almost every day for two weeks. I was 12 years old and had no idea who Cary Grant was, but my mother did. I thought he sounded funny pronouncing my name--ROY! The local pilot of the plane was Bob Coe. Today I'm owner and pilot of a Piper Cherokee. The man who works on it is Bob Coe, also a pilot and son of the original pilot.

  • @fly1041 Great story fly1041. This is without a doubt one of the great scenes in the history of film. It had a profound influence on the directors of the James Bond films. It ushered in a scale of imagery and story that had not existed before. Your lucky to have witnessed it. Has that area where it was shot changed much since it was shot in 58' ? What is the hyway # ? I'd lilke to google map it.

  • @spactick It has changed very little. There are some wildlife refuges and a little more farm land, but basically it's the same. I fly my plane over it often and it's still remote. Google map "Corcoran Road, Wasco, CA," and it will take you pretty close to where the scene was shot--a few miles north of Highway 46. Some say the scene was shot on Garces Highway, which runs east and west, but that's incorrect. Corcoran Road runs north and south. Look at the shadows in relation to the road.

  • @fly1041Thanks, fly1041 for porviding that. Do you know how they got that high camera angle? It looks as if they were shooting off a water tower or grain elevator etc; something like that. I took film classes when I was in college, and they touched on that, but I forgot how Hitchcock (or his photographer) got that high angle. I doubt they would have used a boom. North by Northwest is one of my favorite films of all time. I think only The Treasure of the Sierra Madre ranks higher for me.

  • @spactick When I first watched the picture, sometime when I was a teenager, I saw the crane shot and remember thinking I never saw them film it. As a 12-year-old on the set I was more interested in the equipment than anything else and would have noticed, but it had to be a crane or something because there weren't any high structures in the area. The "cornfield" was transplanted from the Wasco High School ag farm. By the way, Cary Grant being chased by the crop duster is NOT a blue screen shot.

  • @fly1041 An amazing story. This scene of course is dicussed extensively in the DVD release of the movie. In it they mentioned that there was a continuity error, meaning some scenes had to be reshot, explaining why this turned into a two week shoot. You didn't happen to witness this when it occured did you? Apparantly the woman responsible for continuity was nearly hysterical when she realized this.

  • @fly1041 I think a lot of the scene is Rear Projection, but I guess they filmed the crop duster and the parts where it's not about to hit him out there

  • @fly1041 Just out of interest, what crops are those he's hiding in?

  • I would have be cool if he had a cellphone. He could call for help.

  • brilliant!

  • that movie has everything ! great actors (cary grant, james mason, eva marie saint, martin landau, etc.) , great directing (hitch!), interesting & entertaining story, great theme (herrmann), etc.

  • Still makes me duck...run Cary....run!!!!

  • So we want Cary Grant dead ? Er yeah. Okay, any particular way ? No, nothing specific. Where is he again ? Near the fields on the empty road. Oh ok, maybe a drive by ? In a car ? I would've thought so yeah why what are you thinking ? Bus ? No that other guy is waiting for the bus. Erm... I can't really think of anything else... unless... Unless what ? We can put a machine gun onto a crop duster ? What the plane that's primarily used for farming ? Yeah. I love the way you think.
  • Plane VS. Cary Grant

    Cary wins every time.

  • does any one know where this place actually is???

  • @MrAndrewjs It was filmed just north of Bakersfield, California between Wasco and Delano not too far from my dad's ranch where I grew up. I remember my grandfather talking about the camera crew and setting up this shot with the repurposed cropduster.

  • @MrAndrewjs Bakersfield, California

  • It's a shame Northwest doesn't exist anymore now!

  • I've heard that this part was one of the best filmed scenes in movie history, so much so that there are college courses dedicated to teaching this scene.

  • When people see old movies they either go overboard and compliment them out of nostalgia or criticize them because they were made before the viewer was born. I think this movie stands on its own merits and in many ways is better than Psycho. "Dated" as a previous poster mentioned is not a valid criticism. If you want everything to be current than the tv show you watched last night is dated.

  • 1:11

I absolutely love everything about this shot.

  • @TheLatinJewLook

One of the greatest shots in cinema

  • genialna scena -nic dodac nic ując

  • William Holden as Roger Thornhill is interesting, but I doubt he could have done the light comedic parts in the movie as effectively. Also, Grant did not look that old to 1957 audiences. Older people today look a bit younger than they did in the '50's and '60's. Eva looks quite mature and sophisticated but was quite young. There's a bit of this phenomenon when I look at Mad Men...they guys just look older then they are.

  • @2441822831 Yes. that was typical in those times. Now fashion starts with teenagers and works its way to older people. Then, fashion started with mature people in their 20s and 30s. Fashion was meant to suit mature figures and mature sensibilities. Teenagers would wear girlish versions of women's clothes, not grown women wearing dowdy versions of girls' clothes. This is also true of men's clothes. The suit was standard issue back then, meant to flatter a grown man's body.

  • I think Hitchcock knew better...:)

  • Whetever man... You seem to have no idea...

  • I've always been baffled as to why there was no music in the scene. The score for this movie is thrilling and exciting. The scene could have been ten times better had the music been placed to add suspense.

Not that it's a bad scene or anything.

  • No, it was worse than that, even, but I won't go into details becuase it's only a rumour. It actually had something to do with young women.

  • Very iconic

  • I love Charade, first Audrey Hepburn movie I've seen...it'sso twisted...I'm so glad I bought it...although To Catch a Thief I haven't seen, but desperatelty want to! I see you're a big Hepburn/Kelly fan, what movies do you like other than those?

  • XD CARY GRANT IS GAWD! what's your favorite Cary Grant movie!??

  • @arisztidoltz my favorite so far would have to be 'Notorious'. I think he's perfect as the FBI agent, and it's the movie that made me really like him as an actor. His conflicted feeling come across really well, and despite him acting like an ass, you still like him.

Plus you can't go wrong with Ingrid Bergman, of course.

  • You all think the fact he was gay was so bad...I heard a rumour about him which was much worse than that..but I won't go into details..

  • Was that the rumour about him sexually abusing Barbara Hutton's son?

  • @mahler71 Yes, exactly .. you've heard a _rumor_. Think how easy it is to put a rumor into the world and nigh unto impossible to restore a reputation tarnished that way, regardless of whether there was any truth to the rumor or not.

  • whats the name of the movie

  • north by northwest

  • Well, I did hear something about that being a lie. This rumor came out after his death. His family was very upset. They said it was a lie. I tend to believe the family. I notice gays like to make everyone think someone credible is "gay" to try to further their cause. Like I said: Another GAY lie.

  • Grant had already had sexual relationships with Orry Kelly, Noel Coward and William Haines before he moved in with Scott.

  • poh, the best actor ever, i think!!

  • hmm.. this was like in the 50s..

  • Watch out for that crop dusting plane!!!!!

  • Cary Grant was not a homosexual. That was Rock Hutson. Cary was married. Of all the stories of his life, I have never heard that.

  • He was married five times. The rumours of him being bisexual started because he lived with another man and a mutual acquaintance claimed to have slept with both of them and that they were in love with each other.

I just don't get why anyone cares.

  • Inannaskili, I would suppose people with moral values would care. Still with all the life stories, I have read and watched this is merely a irresponsible rumor.

  • I don't see what moral values would have to do with it, unless he was cheating on his wives, which I doubt he did, but of course, there's no way I would know.

Regardless of his sexuality, Cary grant was a brilliant actor a great comedian, and a damn sexy man. That's as much as I need to know.

  • @Inannaskili "Why would I think he's gay when we spent all that time fucking?"

  • Grant was a homosexual who lived with his lover Randolph Scott for 12 years.

  • Another GAY lie.

  • Grant was a homosexual.

  • Grant's third wife Betsy Drake commented "Why would I believe that Cary was homosexual when we were busy fucking? Maybe he was bisexual. He lived 43 years before he met me. I don't know what he did"

    peter firth you suck...eat dick

  • Stop the presses! Cary Grant is having an affair with Natalie Wood, and it's a HOT one!

  • wow id be scared if that happened to me =O

  • they made fun of this on scrubs...xDD...lol

  • 1.11 to 1.22 That has to be the best shot I have ever seen.

  • Whoot! I <3 Carrrryyyyyyy!

  • Brilliant camera action in this scene.

  • It's george clooney 50 years ago hahaha

  • RUN CARY RUN! Gawd I <3 him!!!

  • Cary grant was an excellent actor: I love him in the Father Goose. Please do not criticize him he was not a pederast.

    LeRoi

  • do yoy have the prove? I cannot beliewe it!

    Merry Christmas !!!1

  • @LeRoi715 Cary Grant was da man! I've never seen a film that he was in that wasn't worth seeing.

  • Why all the criticism? AND- Can't you see an incredible actor when you see one? Study up boy! He was no homo and why does your conversation have such a lame landing anyway? You are in the minority.

  • An amazing actor in an amazing movie!! Period.

  • Cary Grant wasn't gay - he was one of the few people around at the time who wouldn't sign in to the prejudice that was the norm, and he didn't care if people talked about him because of it. We need people like him.

  • Who gives a shit? Get a life!

  • @Simoneallen1 I always thought this also. I think the same about Brando, who really didn't care what people thought about him.

  • Does it matter if Cary Grant was homosexual or not? He was a talented man. And if you hate the film so much, why are you watching a video about it?

  • You should shut the fuck up you asshole.Cary Grant is an amazing actor and he could kick your gay ass and day of the week.

  • so what if he was a homosexual? so was freddy mercury, and queen had great songs, rock hudson liked the penis too, but made good flicks, this still does not detract it is one of the classic movies ever made.

  • 1. Yes, Obama is so far a successful president, so stop using his name. 2. Cary Grant is under-rated. He did not over-act. ALot of movie-goers want to see people overact. Grant was very versatile. He could have won some award for any of his roles. So please, give it a re-watch or something. He is more subversive, expressive, and interesting than you think.

  • North By Northwest, I think his best movie!

  • what's your point? He was a great actor. Feeling a little inferior are we?

  • Oh so you mean to say that playing Roger Thornhill in "North by Northwest" was the same as playing Walter Eckland in "Father Goose"? LOL, okay... You seem to have nothing better to do than troll the comment sections on all Cary Grant YouTube videos. Seriously, every single video. You must really lead a poor and boring life to spend all day doing that.

  • You're just proving my point...so thanks!!

  • if you think he's a homosexual, then why are you watching videos of him?

  • Whow it's still thrilling to just watching it on youtube... No background music, as Alfred just builds up the suspense by telling you the distance between the plane and Cary Grant.

  • Why isn't North by Northwest in the tags? 0_o

  • probably one of the most famous scenes of all time. And that shot where Cary Grant is running with the plane behind him is genius.

  • One of the best scenes in movie history. Only Hitch could have done it!

  • I watched this one night when I was bored. Awesome movie, still entertaining to this day

  • That would have been great Danutchereches if you put the year/name of movie/and famous director...

  • It doesn't get any more classic, or amusing, than Cary Grant just standing there with the perplexed look on his face as the plane is coming towards him.

  • one of my top ten--maybe top five--favorite films!

  • Cary was actually English born in Bristol on the south west coast. He made his way to the U.S. as a circus performer.

Yes the movie is one of my favourites.

  • he was, and a lot of people don't realise it

they also don't realise, of fail to accept that the american accent he spoke with was actually put on to (in his words) "aid his career"

away from the camera and in private, he would instinctively revert back to his english accent.

  • Brilliant scene from a brilliant movie!

  • north by northwest is an awesome movie. cary grant makes it that much better, too.

  • Modern politix... tz

  • Muchas Gracias*-* que Hombre Hermoso*-*

    ANA*-*

  • One of my favorite Cary Grant movies! North By Northwest!!!!

  • One of the strongest moments in film. A must see classic movie, the clip cant compare. Cary was the sexiest man EVER..except Elvis of course!

  • thanks alot for this, helped with my english homework on a review of this scene..! x

  • The old day's hey. Cary Grant was actually not American I think he was Welsh.

  • He was English, from Cornwall. The Cornish have an accent a bit like Welsh, and they used to have their own language too.

  • caryin hakkını yenmiş eğer onunda bi uçaksavarı yada nükleer başlıklı bi C4ü bilemedin 5i olsaydı bianlam veremediğim esrarını hala koruyan obakışları atmasına gerek kalmazdı beriyandan senaryosuyla bufilmin dewamı niteliğini taşıyan başka bifilmde cary bubakışları sağa sola kaçışları birbaşka hastalıklı piçin budünyadan göçüp gitmesine sebebiyet vermiştir demekistediğim biyerlerde hayat dewamederken ötekitaraflarda birdiğeri anlamını yitirebiliyo

  • this is unjustice. if cary grant had a weapon maybe he could shoot the enemy. but its not matter coz cary run faster then leads... and also cary had runaway and saved his life but the other side that became the reason of vincent gallo's dead

  • english please?

  • i wrote a english one
