I saw this show twice on the '89 tour, denver and Phoenix (outdoors in december where Ian had to stop singing because of the cold!) The opening to this show was rather tame in comparison. The female sillouette models at both the shows I saw were a bit more risque!
I saw them at RPI Arena in Troy, NY where they opened the US leg that year. It was probably the most "Rock" of all the Tull shows I'd ever seen. Hilariously tongue-in-cheek, Ian was in full performance mode that night. He knew Tull was an anachronism, but played the whole thing up anyway. Give the people what they want.
Some kid walking home alone afterward was yelling "I just saw Jethro (effing) Tull!" I laughed, because that could have been me about 12 years earlier.
I went to the show in Phoenix. I think it was the last concert of the tour. Ian Anderson was ill and the show was cut short. It was good while it lasted, but I think it was only about 45 minutes or so. Rock Island is an underrated album.
Have they released any live videos from this era? This is fantastic, thanks for posting. Love the way it goes into 'Steel Monkey'. Nice rocker that one.
Watch at 2:17 when Ian stands up to walk off the spotlight. His flute drops to straight up and down, his profile hits perfect with his beard and his back is hunched. It's so cool and I remember it looking just like that when I saw it live I thought it just happened to look like that. But here it is again! So cool! 2:17
Love it so got to comment further. Had forgotten about the girl or muse being along with Ian in the pre show silhouette, I can see where she might summon your best efforts.
That steel monkey jig is a signifigant part of why IA continues to engage me to this day, eloquently crazy.
Really? I bet it was good. There is something about 89 concerts of tull. They were just so enthusiastic I guess. Ian's voice was great that year I think. 80s was one of his better voices. (except when he got throat disease in 1985-86.)
By the way, I am taking my 11-year old brother & 9-year old sister to theirs very 1st Tull show, in Warsaw, Poland, September 2009. I wish they'd have such taste as you! Let's hope they'll enjoy it.
You have to get them to go! Sadly, I have never been to a tull show. BUT, I have so much concerts (Audio and video) I can sorta feel how it would be. If you brought them it would open a new gate to life for them Lol.
No, but I really think they would enjoy it such as you.
Have fun, and thanks for watching my Tull videos, there is more to come!!
I was 14 at my first Tull gig... You surely have to find somebody older than you and go! Believe me - it's nothing like seeing Tull LIVE! I'd take you to Tull show with my siblings, but my homeland Poland is soooo faaaaaar awayyyyy from the USA :-/
Don't worry, my dad will take me, he saw tull in 87, he was the one that got me into Jetrho Tull. They havn't come to minnesota, or near Duluth for a while. so... ; )
Yes, this was a good tour to see. The last of the good ones really, for me anyway. I'm amazed by your age and enthusiasm, and also very envious of your collection. So glad you are sharing it with us, though.
So you're only 12... I am Tull fan since 1994, I collect unofficial live Tull audio & video since the end of nineties... I am 25 now and never seen that great footage before! I am kind of jealous :-P "Strange Avenues" is one of Ian's greatest and most underrated songs ever. Thank you very much again, our young master!
Wow that was impressive, seen every tour since 72, saw this one four times, just remember it as another great tour. He seems in better voice than was often the case in 89. I believe Ian's voice in the last nine years has generally been better than this period, i know this is minority, the band's only crime is now treading the line between nightly excellence or brilliance on a good one, compared to some nights in the seventies when they could change your life, seek excellence.

Isn't there a gag or joke about Doane playing the violin or something like that??I know this concert had a few funny bits in it.
It was also the last of the big arena concerts for them as well. Afterwards, they might have gone for smaller venues.

I havn't heard that. But I'm sure there was some sorta rumor. Thanks for watching! Underwraps2
