(Continuation) The passage with the snare drum is presumably the children's chorus (also in the first scene) which is an obvious allusion to a very similar children's chorus shortly after the beginning of Bizet's "Carmen." The book on which the opera was based is a novella of the same name by Aleksandr Pushkin.
The theme at the beginning which is closely related to the main theme of the first movement of the Fifth Symphony (which was written two years before the opera) is a variation of Tomsky's ballad in the first scene of the first act which tells the story that is the foundation for the opera's plot, the way that Senta's ballad is for the plot of "Der fliegende Holländer." The motive that comes in at 1:11 (?) is the "Fate" motive (also that of the "Three Cards" and of the title figure herself).
The very first notes of this overture... That is just like the main theme of his Symphony no. 5 1st movement! Any one knows if it reappears in the opera?
@genericbotface, try 89.7 FM, it is WCPE FM, total classical 24/7. If you can't pick it up on your radio, try going to your computer and enter wcpe in google. It will give you access on your PC. Excellent station and music, totally supported by contributions, IIRC.
@iheartpink67 Could it be the opening of the 2nd act ('Radostno, veselo v den' sei') ? It's a very upbeat song where timpani figure prominently (although it also features a chorus).
@kingpojo1 Funny you should say that -- I live in southern California and every single other station is some horrid Latin pop... stuff. But at least I have 104.9 XLNC1! lol
I'm also trying to find that version. Apparently the Queen of Spades is based on a book, and both Tchaikovsky and Franz Von Suppe wrote operas for it. I'm sure your looking for the Franz Von Suppe version, but I'm having a difficult time finding it...
@OriginalGreendayGrl The Queen of Spades is based on a short story by A. Pushkin. I haven't heard anything about an operatic version by Von Suppe, but if it does exist, I'd love to know.
There is so many copies of this song. :o.

It's nice, but the Ace of spades is better.

Tchaikovsky compositions sounds more triumphant and strong especially for classical music. I suppose this would be like rock for Classial listeners.

Three people got the Queen of Spades instead of the ace - and lost everything!

3 dislikes? Guess who... The three, the seven and the ace...

When those trombones enter and the melody rises up and up, it makes my spine tingle!
Mahler conducted the first performance in the USA at the Met in 1910.
Anyone know which recording this is? Its not Gergiev. Ozawa?

Quick question; is the theme that starts at 1:15 found anywhere else in the opera? And if so, where is it found?

Tchaikovksy was a master orchestration. In particular his operas are incredible, totally unique and powerful experiences.
