  • just beautiful every word :)

  • damm you luke, you set the bar to high for us mere mortals.

  • I have sung this song from Garyvoe to Glasgow - always in the safe knowledge that no one hears me.

Luke Kelly is and was the best Scots/Irish singer - forever and always.

I wish I could have heard him singing so many Scots/Irish songs - especially Kiillecrankie...

  • Luke ,the genius, Wonderful voice, the best interpreter of them all. This is a masterpiece, RIP Luke & Sean & Ronnie & all the other great Dubs.

  • just brilliant ppl...

  • not bad at all but the corries do it better :)

  • @mesmiths No one does any song better than Lukey.

  • @mesmiths hehe bullcrap. I dont think the corries would agree with you

  • @tony10396861 Well the one surviving Corrie might not- but then there's no harm in some modesty is there. Me? I'm free to say the Corries version is superior.

  • @mesmiths You're free to say whatever you want, just don't expect many people (non-Scots) to agree with you. The Corries were nice singers but Luke Kelly was the most stunning singer I've ever heard and he and the Dubs are still loved by millions all over the world

  • @tony10396861 Thanks! Lovely bit of patronising guff there.

  • @mesmiths What??

  • @tony10396861 and 4,999,999 Scots intae the bargain. Luke was the man. Whit a voice.

  • You can feel it in your very soul. It is the chord or force that connects us with our "Irishness". A pride beyond pride. An emotion there is no name for, except perhaps an understanding that we are part of something. That somewhere within us all there is thousands of years of Irish culture. Luke had it in his voice, Joyce in his words but we all have it somewhere.

  • @1987markanthony I don't know you but Hats off,well said

  • This is the song of my youth, my Dad used to play this on the old vinyl record player when he'd had a few & dance around with my mother while she laughed heartily at his very (very) bad singing. The music lives on, and so does the memory

  • ingo another world under the sea with mermaids

  • I've sung this song many times for family and tried (but never managed) to sing this in the "Luke" style. His voice was so beautiful, miss you Luke.

  • he wishes he was away in where?

  • @lxa3000 Ingo. It's some sort of mythological land, I think.

  • spinetingling

  • What an extraordinarily generous man he was. Whenever he sang he put every bit of himself into the song. He bared his soul. It's not generally my form to be so mushy and sentimental but when it comes to Luke all bets are off and I just can't help it

  • Let us count ourselves fortunate that there is so much recorded of Luke.

Paddy Reilly is a worthy successor but Luke had a unique timbre that

I've not heard elsewhere. Heart and Passion too.

  • does it get any better than this

  • simply sensational.

  • loved in liverpool - brilliant luke, brilliant

  • Who are the five people who "dislike" this song? Because it's amazing.

  • When you enter heaven they will be playing Luke Kelly.

  • only my father could sing this better...RIP Luke Kelly

  • absolutley beautiful song sung by a magical man with a magical voice

  • Luke had the ability to make your hair stand on end, such was the emotion he put into every song he sang. One of a kind. Unique.

  • I must admit that the corries version of this song, is much faster and they do it really well. I am sure the dubliners, knew the corries and very, likely very great friends with each other and they I am sure must have got on really well with each other. It is a damn shame, Luke, Ciaran and Ronnie are dead and gone now but it happens to every living person we are mortal and we die that is a fact. We have to enjoy our lives while we are here, and not put things off if we can help doing so.

  • finscéalta beannacht an ceann deireanach de na héireann cad iontach an fear a bhfuil a leithéid de bronntanas uathúil RIP - Luke

  • I love this song. It's somehow comforting to know that men have suffered this way for as long as there have been women. So, I put my head to a cask of brandy....

  • When ever I go back to Dublin it still feels like he is still there .

  • This is a Canadian (Nova Scotia) folk song from the 1880s, best known version is by "The Corrs" an Irish folk group in circa 1996, also by Luke Kelly + The Dubliners, The Corries and many others.

  • Sumbaday said Robbie Burns wrote hur sirr.... i didnt know tha now.....

  • Lukes the man.......Awondar was Peggy Gordon foine,,

  • This is a top tune...not Irish at all.Its based on an old Scottish air from a vaudeville play way back in the 1840's

  • This red haired Irishman was the heart and soul of Ireland, may he be long remembered, from highland Heart of Nova Scotia

  • When I hear Mr. Kelly sing I am Irish. sìth

  • This song was written by Robert Burns. Luke Kelly makes it great!

  • Dear Kelly:

Thank you so much for these wonderful songs. You have made many of us very happy by taking the time and trouble to share your treasures with us.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG. SCOTTISH, BUT SUNG BY THE BEST IRISH SINGER EVER

  • @celtic1958 Canadian, mate, canadian. The song was collected in Nova Scotia. Although both Irish and Scottish roots are clearly seen.

  • he has that old time voice. i love it.

  • Must be a scousers reunion, this song can be our anthem.

  • From a Scouse man thank you Kelly - lovely song. Be at the Brick Up show September The Empire - this is a song in show I think. Lovely singer Luke Kelly.

  • this was my Da's song. also 'the sun is burning' he is dead 18 years now but this music just makes the hair stand on the back of my neck, wot a fab fab voice! a true legend and hero of the working class...

  • one of lukes best a fantastic song

  • Yer givin us sum grea stuff ere kelly,, cheers te ye... Luke is King at this wan ... though Roy Willliamson o the Corries comes in a close second ,both gone but thanks te people lak you ...nay forgotton !

  • Oh Liverpool Lou - great great singer the Dubliner Luke

  • I love Luke & will never tire of his voice. He is a world treasure & should be seen & heard by everybody.miss you Luke you went much too early in life.Have a listen to the Dransfields singing this great song, obviously not as powerful but really good.

  • I see a nice pic there of Peggy Gordon, my God she was a stunner, kinda looks like that Corr woman who sings a bit too:)

    Patrick...

  • notin like luke to put a smile on yer mush!!

  • irish soul music

  • Was at a Flogging Molly show tonight in Philadelphia and the lead singer gave his shout out of music influence to Luke Kelly and the Dubs. Nice gesture

  • Who cares, Irish or Scottish, we are all Celts. Luke sings from the heart and that's what counts. There wil never be another Luke Kelly; and while this is good it pales when compared to many other of his ballads.

    akgwatts

  • song for irelands a goddamn good

  • @akgwatts nicely sed

  • A favorite when we chased the motorway construction/environmental destruction across Britain in the '70's

  • This is an all time classic by Luke Kelly. Great upload ..........5 Stars !!

  • class

  • love luke what a ledgend

  • @zuluder866 Cant be serious!!!!! Clancy was a lovely singer, different style but not within a million miles of Luke

  • @tony10396861 I obviously touched a few hearts...in the wrong way apparently since the comment was removed for neg votes. To be honest I don't remember what I had said but if I offended anyone I apologize. I love Lukes voice and all the Dubliners stuff is just pure gold. That being said my preference...mine.... is the version of Liams. Not taking anything away from Luke. Merry Christmas to one and all.

  • great picture of him.

  • Comment removed

  • listen..... listen..... listen.....to a angle his voice is unbelievable

  • Luke is certainly 100% Irish, but this is actually a Scottish song, sorry.

  • Peggy gordon is a scottish name but it is possible that an irishman wrote it for her, listen to the Bonny Lass o Fyvie. It certainly sounds like a soldiers lament to his sweetheart.

  • Correct, it is a Scottish song, and a song from the islands too. Skye, etc. Its older than you think it is. : ) Hehe

  • Oh, how I love this song.

  • LOL!! Kelly..ur postings are truly CLASSIC

    Grandma, Eire

  • Beautiful song.

  • Luke, gets to the very essence of what it means to be Irish like no one else I know. Peggy Gordon typifies his great talent.

  • It goes with out saying. How can one not listen to this and know that this is the 100% proof essence of Ireland

  • taking nothing away from luke kelly but paddy reilly does a great version of this too

  • For me Luke Kelly is the greatest singer of folk music there has ever been or ever will be.

Every time I hear one of his performances I still feel the same awe I felt the first time.

  • @maxriddles

Couldn't argue with that comment. What a gift.

  • @maxriddles Absolutely, I* could not have put it in better words. Luke was & still is in my eyes A genious.

  • @Teddyb1939 who ar you

  • Kelly, thank you so much for all these Luke Kelly tracks. They are my favourite youtube subjects. I never tire of hearing Luke's beautiful voice.

  • to hell with peggy, i wish luke was here.

  • @irishgeal1 Peggy may not have sung as well as Luke, but would you kiss a man with a beard like that?

  • @jeffhegarty lol only if it was on lukes face :)

  • Comment removed

  • @irishgeal1 To each his own.

  • @jeffhegarty Well I certainly would...haha. I listen to this almost every day in my car, gives me the courage to face the day :-)

  • @joeygsmom Anyone who would kiss a face like Luke Kelly's doesn't need courage!

  • @jeffhegarty theres lots of girls like us, et tu Kelly O???

  • @joeygsmom As a bearded man, my bad. I assumed I was talking to a man. Oops.

  • @jeffhegarty haha thats OK. 'joeygsmom' does sound like a Belgian man maybe, but I am actually Joey G's mom.

  • @joeygsmom Fair enough. Nice talking with ya

  • every song Luke sings is a master class!

  • agreed , the man could never do any wrong in my eyes,

  • Definitely a bango-centric song. Love it! Thanks for posting, Kelly.

  • will we ever see his like again

  • Oh Peggy Gordon you really are my darling. A great Scots son sung by a great Irish singer.

  • I still have the LP from 40+ years ago. What a tragic loss when he died so young.

  • brilliant

  • Absolutely love this song. First heard it sung at a concert in Liberty Hall,Dublin in 1966 by Paddy Reilly (now of the Dubliners) ~~~ Dedicated to a lady in Belfast called Joyce ♥

  • I have the all gaelic version out of the Isle of Bara in Scotland. Pretty cool hearing it in englsih.

  • That`d be something to hear.

  • outstanding

  • Luke sang from his heart and from his soul.

He rates up there among the best in my book.

I saw him upstairs on a number 16A double decker bus in Dublin one night a few months before he died. I love a man, or woman, who sings their heart out. I will see you again in the next life Luke and hopefully you will let me sing a song or two with you.

  • It took an Irishman (albeit half-Scottish) to bring out the best of a great Scottish song, who cares though. Thank you Luke Kelly, and God bless.

  • His grandmother was from Scotland that makes him one quarter Scottish by my calculation.

  • I have an obsession with this song. My son, who is 2, insists on hearing this song every time we drive or are in a room with a computer... I guess we both know good music when we hear it.

  • Luke Kelly had an amazing talent. Just listen to the way he holds a note.

  • i pulled a lovely girl back in 1984 after singing this one to her, she must have being deft, mad or drunk because singing is not my best talent.imagine if i had being able to sing like luke. mmm

  • hahaha oh what could have been eh? :P

  • haha, good on you miskyboyy, what could have been, ah fair play to luke, he was doing me favours and he did not even know me, keep a stool warm for me up there luke

  • I think this may be my favorite song ever.

  • LONG LIVE IRELAND!!!

    Greetings from Germany!

  • love this 1 im a big luke fan and i like red biddy 2 they also play this all the best from kilclief and strangford

  • What is the tune? I know it is traditional but I'm sure I've heard other songs set to it but can't put names to them & it's driving me mental.

  • The Banks of the Sweet Primroses is the tune.

  • What a beautiful haunting song sung by a wonderful talented singer. Such a great loss to the world. Why don't we hear lovely, memorable melodies like this today?

  • tears in my eyes

  • God bless you Luke, the kids don't know what they missed. Keep up the great work Kelly!

  • Saw The Proposition on TV recently and been humming this beautiful Scottish ballad to myself since. Can any of our Scots friends tell us where Ingo is ?

  • It´s no Ingo but England believe it or not where unfortunately many of us ended up

  • wow i have never seen this pic before ,, it blows me away .. intense

  • It's pure pure gold with a touch of the blackstuff. Oh for one golden evening drinking and singing with Luke. God grant him peace but leave a space at the bar for me.

  • slainte!

  • i have a little cry everytime i hear luke sing this song, god bless you luke,

  • Kelly, what a great post! I play this on guitar everytime me and my mates have a jar or two. Great stuff! What a service you are doing to keep Lukes memory alive like you do. God bless!

  • superb

  • wow i'm australian and don't know what to make of that voice except I cant stp listening to it

  • Being Australian has nothing to do with it!.Or perhaps everything!.Or nothing at all!.Maybe it an Irish Ancestor calling to you to from the grave, encouraging you to stop listening to Kylie and listen to real music instead!.LOL.Nah, I'm a Kiwi, possibly a decendant of your ancestors jailor, but I feel the same when it comes to Luke Kelly. The reason you cant stop listening is because he had a rare gift.Simply with his voice he made us remember the past and hope for the future.

  • HEAR HEAR!!!

  • fucking excellent

  • the fakers make attempts to do these songs but no one can make you enter the story and travel through it all like lukes voice.

there are no words for the emotions a voice like his can stir.

    thank you luke.

  • another classic, thanks kellyoneill its tough to get lukes cds over here in boston

  • I actually believe that Luke Kelly is THE greatest singer of all time. I can think of no other voice that stirs the emotions the way Luke's can. Just by singing he could make you believe he was either having the time of his life or nursing a broken heart. Unique and irreplaceable.

  • I think so too. Such a voice. Goes beyond just being merely "Irish", really.

  • Thanks for that. Perfect..

  • he is argubly the best irish singer of recent times, god bless luke, say hello to my no.1....elvis

  • All time, I would say, the guy was just life itself, what a vioce, and what a guy.

  • I play it over and over cant get enough of it,

and it sounds even better when you have it loud on an mp3 player :)

  • lovely tune

  • I have never met anyone called Peggy Gordon, but I convince myself that she is the unrequited love of my life every time i hear Luke sing this song. The man's voice is hypnotic. Oh peggy....

  • beautiful

  • Wonderful. Sings his heart out. He is enjoying singing here. He is in great voice. His voice sends a shiver down my spine. Every word is clear to the listener. You would think that Peggy Gordon was standing beside him.

  • Luke Kelly a true legend , R.I.P.

  • Thank you from the heart Kelly for posting these marvellous songs as sung an can only be sung by the great late Luke Kelly ! Indebted !

  • :) My Pleasure

  • Spent all morning listening to Luke, and collating a fav playlist of Lukes, I,ve said it before, well done Kelly.
