Ford made a couple mistakes with the 390. first, were the heads. They could not breath right for the powerful engine, second the carb was too small. The cam was the heart of the engine, but they screwed up with the heads and the carb. the torque was fantastic!. This is why the camaro's and dodge's just kicked this car's ass in a straight line. Pull the heads and port and polish them and install a 750 holley, and your 390 will fly!! Good luck hooking up the tires. NO WAY.

Who wanted to carve up the canyons in those days?

The 390 was too heavy for the 1968 Mustang for taking the horse on a road course or through chicanes.
Straight line quarter mile with a 390 was power in '68! And with a hot engine set up on the 390 the pony would pull wheelies.
My preference was the stock Mustang GT with 302 cu in. Windsor engine and the automatic C4 transmission.
Don't forget about 'crash and burn'.
