  • My westcoast brothers talken bout Krupa & Buddy Rich...cross town it was Chic Web , then 30 miles up the road but allways in my neighborhood was Alvin Jones ! Lot of great sounds have come out the musical hub known as Detroit .

  • @anandanaga999 You got that right man.

  • @anandanaga999 try poetry man! udont just "play" like him and nobody EVER would.hhTHATS Mr ELVIN JONES.doe

  • Palle mother fuckin' Danielsson!!! \,,/

  • Elvin was a train that musicians hitched a ride with occasionally.....unstoppable!

  • after 20 years of practicing and playing ten hours a day, i'd say im a pretty good drummer. but elvin is on a whole different level

buddy rich was a devastating monster

but elvin somehow transcended music, somehow his playing was on a spiritual level

genius doesnt even begin to describe elvin jones

  • @2strong2cool according to your profile your 20 years old, so you've been practicing ten hours a day since the day you were born. Also you've found the time to become a professional boxer and professional DJ. Wow, thats really impressive if its true but me thinks someones living in fucking fantasy land!

  • Coul somebody recommend me some songs or discs of this great drummer, please.

  • Spiritual, A love supreme,- anything with John Coltrane and him.

  • just do a search on Elvin Jones in Wikipedia and it will give you a listing of everything he's done.

  • Elvin made a beautiful duet recording with Albert Mangelsdorf, maybe hard to find. for live look to late 80s period.

  • CHE PIGNA!!!

    SWING!!

  • why have i never heard of courtney pine before now?!

  • Great video..................

  • mistrz

  • My friend once said to me that it "looked like i was tossing a sald back there". So now when I saw Elvin do it I had to say it.

  • Elvin doin work!

  • Grande Elvin, ho letto, qui, commenti di critica, forse non sono batteristi. Grande innovatore in pieno be bop. Lui si è inventato lo swing in terzine invece che in 16mi. Suona i 4/4 in 6/8 e riquadra sempre. Rende tutto più fluido. La musica di Coltrane senza Elvin sarebbe stata tutt'altra cosa. Se, poi non vi piace Coltrane, altro discorso.

  • Fantastic stuff, thanks for posting that. Elvin is such an incredible presence on the bandstand. This is very fine.

  • If you don't respect the CULTURE, you'll never get the MUSIC !!!!!!

  • F*CKING PHENOMENAL

  • god damn what a video!!!!!!

  • Man this is a great video. Does anyone know what tunes they were playing?

  • It sounds like Elvin's Three Card Molly

  • Elvin was the man, but PLEASE don't say things like that.

  • Badass Jones. Can mix up a tossed salad w/every phrase you get a mixture of anything at all on his mind. Love it.

  • I thought me and my friend were the only ones who referred to jones' playing as tossing salad : D

  • Well said!

  • truthinmusic is a fan!

  • BEAST.

  • gotta love Palle.

  • It is so easily noticed in everything written about Elvin......nothing negative!

    Thank you everyone+JazzVideoGuy

I saw him in Boston in '65 (3 nights too!)

He was still with Garrison, 'Trane and Tyner.

I got an early seat close to Elvin.

    AN UNFORGETABLE SPECTACLE!

  • Elvin is great. He dosesn't just play the drums, he takes the musicians on an adventure. With several of elvins tunes, I drew out his playing with a line. The line raised with intensity, and lowered when the playing became more placid. The final result- there were mountains, valleys, plains- the playing went all over the place! He literally did take them on an adventure, unlike most of the drummers today. RIP

  • my name is elvin dashti

  • i'd like to see this entire performance.... does anyone know where i could get hold of it ??

  • For the thousandth time, thanks JazzVideoGuy! Elvin is probably the most innovative and influential drummer of the last 50 years. It has been written that he almost single-handedly expanded the nature, role and function of the drummer in jazz ensemble playing from time-keeper to improvisor, equal to that of the front line horns and piano. As Leonard Feather once exhorted up and coming drummers of all musical styles - "Dig Elvin!" By the way, I am a JazzDJGuy on WPFW 89.3 FM in Washington DC.

  • Palle!

  • No words can describe this...

  • other than Elvin was a great man...

  • Elvin you were and will always remain the best. thanks for everything you did behind your drums

  • Just love how Elvin starts a groove and carries the theme thru the tune. Goes from simple to complex and back again but the groove is always there. He was so solid as far as understanding composing and arranging. High form of art when you can build a song like he does here. What a great lesson for me.

  • Other Drummers need to be more agreesive like Elvin Jones stop playing one note beats expand your talents peace

  • wow...dang E-man!

  • courtney pine looks so young in this... i didn't know he'd played with elvin.

  • i think he is excellent

  • Oooh - the drumming! Astounding. How is that even possible?

  • This might well be the best musical performance I have ever and will ever see. Cheers T

  • WOW! . .. that is serious stuff . .

  • woah

  • I'm definitely sending this to my favorites.

  • Great video!!!! Love to see Courtney pine in his younger years.
