  • These translations aren't quite correct but she is magnificient.

  • @davidpatrone Its not a translation. Carlos Jobim, who wrote the original song, wrote the lyrics both in Portugese and in English.

  • I miss Elis so much. Her loss was such a tragedy. She had such a great smile and laugh. I used to watch the tv variety show she co-hosted with Jair Rodrigues when I was growing up in Brasil. Her big hit Upa Neginho had a huge effect on me. Brasilian music is the richest in the world.

  • I'm Brazilian and I LOVE this song, but a lot of Brazian people don't care about these Brazilian treasures. That's so sad :(

  • A vida não tem tempo pra ensaio. É a lama, é a lama. Me apaixonei.

  • The lost art of dynamics

  • Would love a translation that didn't lag the video with unwatchable skipping. =(

  • I rather like the version that she recorded with Jobim in 1974. It is Verve CD # 824 418-2, titled simply "Elis & Tom.' On it you can also hear her work the syncopation to exquisite subtlety on the third cut "So Tinha de Ser Com Voce" Listen to her caress the beat as the song winds down - amazing.

  • i am a brazilian and it there is so many good songs like vambora by adriana calcanhoto and ja sei namora by the tribalistas and-wait if i continue i'll get carried away....i was born in brazil and so i listen to songs like this in my car because both of my parents are also brazilians as well....

  • grab a drink grab a glass

  • I grew up listening to ths song, and whilst i was on hold this was on!!!! i you tubed it and was so over joyed!!!!!

  • I should move to Brazil.... this music moves my soul!

  • What a wonderful song. Brazilians know how to make truly lovely music.

  • the played this on radio bbc scotland yesterday and I've been trying to learn it all day today, i'm that taken with it. I since found out that it's one of Portugal's all time favourites, and no wonder- it's like sanskrit verse, you know, "enlightened", aswell as some really classy jazz piano and that very characterisically sexy potuguese female voice. It just really good!

  • @rockbore Yes, that´s a nice comment. She was Brazilian. Brazilian Portuguese language.

  • No song better than this. Estupenda!

  • I love it.

    Is a Wonder!!!

  • Oh yeah these subtitles aren't right. =P

  • There is an english version but i totally forgot the singer's name!

  • Renews my faith in humanity and quickens my tired heart with compassion for all sentient beings.

  • This is unbelievably good.

  • -MASTER PEACE- ★★★★★

  • I just dont get tired of watch this :D

  • I'm just discovering this singer, for the first time, today. I love this song (I love the Brazillian ppl, esp the females ; ) ....that's what lead me to this song AGAIN, on U-Tube. The very first time I heard this song (btw) Al Jaureau did it with Oleta Adams (both American). I think this singer is superb!!!

  • @KassanovaBrowne Yes, she was a top singer in Brazil. Now her daughter Maria Rita is also a good singer. Actually, I heard this is supposed to be just a rehearsal!...

  • i can watch this over and over and i feel so tranquil :) she's awesome.

  • to me this symbolizes the chaos that life can cause ... the waters of march crashing through brazil .... makes you worry and be happy for the stability in your life ... but and I say that it is a false stability because in life you need change exciting times and that is what living is all about your heart yearns for more hence the line "..it's the promise of life in your heart ...."

I really liked this song beautiful ... thank you.

  • Pure beauty!!! Miss her so very much,,,

  • Whaqt a brilliant interpretation. I know the one from Elis and Tom, but this is just so beautiful.

  • Yes, she is much loved in Brazil. A rare talent. Her daughter is also a very popular singer who is known on the US scene.

  • I love this piece, yet this is the first time that I have listened to the original composer perform it. Thank you so much for sharing this!

  • Will never get over this genius. Every song (even those I disliked in the American music market), she has made me feel them and live/sing in me. As France gave us Edith Piaf, Portugal gave us Amalia and fado, America Elvis, Brasil gave us Elis. After over 40 years in the music industry as a singer, how is it possible I never heard of her until YOUTUBE recommended her? A mystery here. On my one hand. I count her as one of the "annointed". There will NEVER be another like her.

  • The video breaks up too often to get a proper sense of the rythmn and melody....too bad; she sounded nice in the fleeting seconds I could hear the song

  • I love how she's laughing at the end. Knowing she's having fun too makes me like this song that much more!

  • This song and performance make me weep every time I hear it. When she laughs at the end, I'm done for. How did the Brazillians come up with the most bittersweet music on earth? jrs

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • Great song- it is the end of summer here in the S. Hemisphere so it could not be more perfect- thank you so much for posting this very uplifting song. I really appreciate the English lyrics being included since I do not know Portuguese!

  • WHAT ARE THE CHORDS , ANYONE, PLEASE ? FANTASTIC SONG !

  • What a missed talent!

  • Love this song. Truly very talented people!!

  • There are very few things in this world that are perfect in every way............How ironic that a piece of music with lyrics that are a flow of consciousness, and forever drifting timing between words and music cold achieve this goal. It is perfect.......

    SvK

  • Há 29 anos o Brasil perdia sua maior cantora, mas sua voz continuará ecoando pela eternidade !

29 years ago Brazil lost its greatest singer, but her voice still echoing in eternity!

  • this song was writen in one of the cities which was hit by floods and catastrophic landslide in Rio de Janeiro state 2011, seems he sadly predicted the disaster

city name sao jose do vale do rio preto..wonderful song!

  • Sans doute la voix féminine la plus mythique de la chanson brésilienne des sixties !

  • The waters of March, this year, are falling in January! The sky is falling and hundreds are the dead and homeless in Rio and São Paulo. When the things started like this, is better start to pray because March will be worse.

  • @vagflu07

My prayers go out to all those caught in such conditions, If I may ask, are you vagflu07 living in Brazil if so please feel free to give us/me your opinion on your weather, has it changed, if so then how has it changed?

    Thanks

Águas de Março and Elis Regina stands for me within the top 100 songs and singers ever created by us humans

    Beijos

  • @MrBiejos the weather is strange. The heat each year grows, but the rain are falling not in frebruary an March, but in January. Last year, the city of Rio had suffered with the tropical rain in April, autumn. I live in Rio and the cities of the mountain region of the state are devastated. Almost thousand deaths and so many are missing and homeless. The truth is we never felt the heat like this summer. Yesterday marked 41º celsius.

He hope that the rain don´t screw the carnival!

    Abraços!

  • @vagflu07 Obrigado minha amigo for your personal weather report. Very sad conditions to live through and my heart and prayers reach out to try to comfort all. Yes! Carnival must carry on!!!! Even with the recent fire occurring Carnival is the spirit of the people and their spirit will shine through regardless of all fire destroyed costumes; It's a good sign that no one was killed. My prayers [intent] of good go out into this world with a little extra to the excellent people of Brazil!!

    Beijos

  • beautiful and fun version! thanks for uploading.

  • This is an amazing song...

By the way, Caingá is a kind of tree, can also be a reference to some Tupi-Guarani indians that can be found at Mato Grosso (really far away! I never saw any of them) and Candeia is an old kind of lamp that don't need electrical energy to work!

Elis Regina is one of ower greatest singer... But we have another great singers, Elis Regina's daughter, Maria Rita, is an amazing singer too.

I think you will like her!

    I really like the translation!

  • this is absolutely beautiful

  • simply beautiful

  • Every time i come back and watch this video again i get tears in my eyes~ what's wrong with me??

  • @seadaddy66 idk , im doing the same. what's wrong with us? QQ

  • @Ylinets lol, i think we're both dramatics.. :} but serious, who could not appreciate such a lovable person and to think her early passing was so avoidable?

  • @seadaddy66 Nothing! my friend, Nothing at all is wrong with you!

  • une chanson qu'on écoute avec autant d'enchantement durant 40 ans ? Classique & immortelle, autant que Mozart: merci, Bresil !

  • So beautiful!!! What an amazing way to make me feel the music, the singer is spectacular!!

  • Oh. I wanna the album name of this song. Would anyone tell me? I find nothing about it. Thanks

  • @luyi7338 Águas de Março

  • @luyi7338 The name is "Elis Regina - MPB Especial - 1973 - Brasil 1973" Good luck

  • @mmtrh Thanks. It is so old :)

  • @luyi7338 the name is "aguas de março"

  • Brazil's "Billie Holiday"

  • Simply Divine

  • i think i really fancy her. something about women w short hair... i dunno. also, she has a beautiful smile. and sings like an angel

  • A great song!!

  • She was awesome and Bossanova is the most sensual sound EVER and sung in Portuguese even better!

  • Haaaa ... c'est bon ... c'est bo-nopleasedon'touchme!!! I might break a little.

    Haaaa ... c'est bon ... c'est bon ... le'pant ... le'pant ... le'pant ... haaaa

  • EPICO!!!

  • love this song! Thanks for the English words.

I feel peace from this tune.

  • This is amazing!

  • nice translation but..

    stubborn fever = febre terçã?

terçã means tertian. febre terçã means that disease called malaria, yellow fever..

  • @lpolonl Gostei da tradução pq apesar de stubborn não significar terçã, o tradutor captou o real sentido da letra que seria algo como "febre que não passa" ou "febre teimosa". My opinion :-)

  • where can I find this version on an album? I have it inside of me now, cant help but to want this song to carry around

  • immortal...

  • It's a real pity that so wonderful people as Tom an Ellis went so early from this world.

  • what a cool tune

  • My oh my...

Listed to Jobim for years but only yesterday did i wonder who sang this so wonderfully and laughed so playfully whilst singing the lyrics..A check online told the sad story of this songbirds premature departure from this world. What a loss.

    Thanks for the subtitled version.

  • Maravilha

  • Along with Seu Georges soundtrack to The Life Aquatic With Steven Zissou, this song that was my intro to the language that still seems to baffle me. But with the subtitles, this is yet another primer for me. Otimo.

  • Funny how a song u hear as a 15 year old boy but resonates inside, makes complete sense as a 46 year old man & resonates in my what the 15 yr old couldn't identify as SOUL.

    Obrigado

  • Thank you for this video mmtrh, ..so nice!

  • que maravilha!!! e lindo e inesquecivel !

  • @seadaddy66: i feel the same way and yes...surreal and smooth..sigh..

  • memorized this song when I was a child.. the english version though...

  • My mind travels a lot when I heard this man. There´s a game called The Sims, and it has many Bossa´s Songs, I recomend these songs for you all. Besides I´ve to agree with you, the Brazilian Portuguese is a very cute language.

  • @Zazzicharrua i agree!! i have the sims soundtrack and it's so wonderful... :)

  • really beautiful

  • I usually never comment on anything but felt compelled to sign in. This song just touched me!!!!!!!!!!

this was absolutely ........ outstanding!!!!! the depth of artistry is just beyond words. I loved it and I love her. She was awesome! Wish I would have known her and Tom Jobim playing is IMPECCABLE!!! Bravo!!

The interplay between these two musical geniuses at the end is so unbelievable!!

  • @goinforabeer1

A correction - the other musical genius you refer to (besides Elis Regina) is not Tom Jobim...it's the wonderfully talented Brazilian pianist, Cesar Camargo Mariano. He pioneered the rhythmic style of playing that you see in this video (left hand and right hand playing different rhythms simultaneously). But anyway...the video is awesome...thanks for sharing it, mmtrh!

  • @goinforabeer1 "GO IN FOR A BEER..." your nick just told me what to say about this song and this singer... yep, "An Artist And a Song Beyond Words". More than that, just a beer can tell us... lis, lol, rss...

  • Wow! Its new 2 me, but also so well known.. Maybe My parents played as i was a baby?'

Anyway, I love it thank u!!'

  • Mina, the great Italian singer, sang this very smae song in Italian, under the tilte of "La Pioggia di Marzo". I truly recommend it, even though she doesn't have that thing the Brazilian singers have...perhaps it's the famous "saudade"??? I don't know, but I like it still!

  • @lautarocos saudade is one of those pretty words of portuguese. I like brazilian portuguese for that reason.

  • Yes!! The first language the Brazil is Portuguese!!

  • @marqsax ingrish

  • WOW

  • I'd agree...their performance is "surreal" and "poco" means in a way, "it's nothing". It's a "little..." Life is good if all anybody needed to say is "poco"... here are lot's who'd rather hang on and be that bump on a log or the "mud" where the car was stuck. Great song...thx for posting this fresh performance.

  • It's a happy song I think...a "cycle of life", with the "promise of Spring". Tempo is pretty regular in this performance...I see this song as optimistic.

  • GREATTTTTTTT!***************

  • preciosa canción!!!

  • my. favorite. song. ever. Love=Jobim

  • una regina.....

  • Thanks for the upload. :)

  • Wonderful song! Elis was fascinating. I have all her records. Perfect song lyrics and music.

  • Wonderful song! Elis was fascinating. I have all her records. Perfect song lyrics and music. I have this video, I will soon make the corrections requested and post it here on Youtube. Anyone who has doubts about the Brazilian Portuguese, so to speak is that I can help.

  • ...

  • que jeito ten ella!!! gostosa!! such passion and style!

  • i love this song..makes me so happy that I learned portuguese..reminds me of why I wanted to in the 1st place..the pronunciation is so beautiful!

  • Not to late for this.

  • it's Mother-Earth giving all she's got

  • I love this artist. Thanks so much for the translation.

  • Beautiful. Probably needs a flute, but ...

  • Thank you! I start my day listening to them as well as Michael Buble. Even on my facebook I'm telling my friends to listen to them. A pure perfection of style

  • Why all the skipping? Very tough to enjoy this otherwise great video. Would be nice if someone could upload a clean version

  • This is a song is beyond words! Pure happines. This music and words are a part of something bigger than life, but describing life anyway as pure art.

  • Goose bumps!

  • A wonderful song, a wonderful singer. She died too young. This is her everlasting legacy.

  • this may be closer to jobim's original intent, but I prefer joao gilberto's version just a little bit.

  • Thank you for this translation... adoro esta cancao!!!

  • Personally, I agree with someone who stated somewhere that Elis Regina & Tom Jobim's "Waters of March" is the definitive. Very haunting, very nostalgic....

... a pure joy to listen to, this song.

  • Oh really? I may need to be born as a Brazilian again. Is Brazilian Portuguese your first language too?

  • @mmtrh This is the YouTube comment of the day.

  • @mmtrh the native indians always lived here then portuguese people to conquer brazil , similar with what happened in united staes with the native indians, but brazil is the only country in south america where portuguese is spoken

  • demais.....vai Brasil

  • @mmtrh yes yes Brazilian Portuguese is our first language!

  • If only I had been old enough before she passed away, perhaps I could have seen her in person and gotten an autograph and maybe kissed her hand...ahhhhh!

  • So many comments on this post since a few years ago that is hard to reply to all. Today I want to see it again after reading your comments so that I get inspired for the day, while sipping my morning coffee. Thanks for the words.

  • Thank you, yes, I too often play this while drinking my morning coffee and getting ready for the world. Ever since I've been getting into the sounds of Bossa Nova I am loving it and telling friends about it. Seems like my generation missed this. (born 60s or 70s)

Myres ! ! ! Todo o meu Portugûes e do youtube. Seu fão do Ray Conniff, com 300 cancãos de RC em os playlists em o meu canal.

I had another version of this performance that was killed by yt and only now found yours - I am most grateful!

Thanks for the comment on my famous name - did you see my 1 upload where I introduce myself? As musicians, you might really like my channel with 110 years of pop music from around the world, one year playlisted at a time.

  • continue assim!... estudar por música é a melhor coisa... assim tento fazer com a sua língua materna...

the Brazilian way to speak makes this language easier, softer and gentile... It's nice to study...

    =)

  • Does anyone know where this version originated from? I like this arrangement better than the arrangement on the Tom & Elis album. Wonderful, thanks for sharing.

  • From a TV show. It only have Elis Regina. It is released in DVD: Ensaio - Elis Regina.

  • Thanks for that info Almendrajr, I agree with gold that this version is the best out there..and her expressions are priceless..so sad the world lost her!

  • thanks for the english sub!

  • ...

  • Reply to zxcas.... or whatever the fuck your slimy little name is. If you didnt like the music i recomeded I completely respect that! But theres no need to trash talk! And if you read my recommendation properly you would see that I didnt ever say that the song had anything to do with Regina! I said it was a mix. Grupo Tom Do Pagode make amazing covers of Brazilian classics. Trust me, I know Brazil and Brazilian music a alot better then you! Grow some taste, and then maybe some brain cells!

  • Ta bom! ; )

  • Legal essa musica eh mto loka, mas prefiro aquela versao dela e tom jobim cantando la :D

  • Portuguese... brasilian has a nice accent smooth and happy... portuguese accent from portugal is dramatic ...poem...

    Brasilian é prosa....

    Portugues é poema...

    Ambos sotaques são bonitos....

  • What a BEAUTIFUL song. Musically and lyrically.

  • Thankyou for posting. Another great take on a fascinating song. Ah. So nice!

  • excellent! Can we change "stomp" to "stump"- means tree stump. and "Mod" to "Mud". The car is stuck in the "mud". Thanks for this video!!

  • Sure! That´s my mistake. Sorry. I don´t have the video to re-edit anymore. I´ll see what I can do about this later. Thanks for the comment.

  • Elis certainly nails the lyrics with precision and pitch for this snappy song by Tom

    Kudos!!

  • Such a wonderful song and lovely in Portuguese.

  • Thanks for the post.

    Great classic. Great tune.

  • Wow. This song has such a great flavor.

  • Beautiful song. I dig Anya Marina's version, too!

  • This song talks about the effects of the ending summer and the massive rain that falls down in March.

That´s a landscape of a turning season to another.

When the rain stops and the rivers back to the nromal level, we can see the destruction and these things on the streets - in this case, in Rio de Janeiro, home of Tom Jobim: woods, things, brids, an other things like stones.

    This is a brazilian himn!

  • Hermosa mi Elis... lo más con esta canción...

y María Rita, claro! tendría que ser su hija, maravillosa igual, qué bueno sería escuchar a María con su estilo covereando esta misma canción. :)

    pero bueno! est
