  • that thing about sleeping on top was fascinating...and it funny when you banged your head :D

  • it would be a lot of work to fire that bad boy up for a pot of ramen noodles

  • Lots of thermal mass to hold the heat, good idea

Necessity is the mother of invention

Thank you again for another look into this world

  • thanks for sharing this

  • Thank you for this! I was wondering. How common is the pechka? In other words, would it be found in most common homes? Or, perhaps just in country homes and farm houses. This is SO interesting to learn how people live, in a country which we were taught to hate when I was young. Ignorance breads fear, and mistrust. Thank you for your enlightening posts.

  • Thank you for the comment! Pechka is quite common in country homes especially old ones. It is less common is modern cottages.

  • @vorojtsov well there is pechka revivial going on now so they are more modernized design!

  • Because of the large thermal mass of brick inside the home, once they heat up, they will stay warm for a long time. This makes good use of wood burning.

    Thank you for posting.

  • I'm as addicted to these videos as the rest of your videos. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • A truly fascinating series of videos.

  • I wonder what the fire dangers are with it?

  • It mostly smoke (not fire) dangers. The wood should completely burn out before you close the air flow.

  • Could you put some meat in there rapped in tinfoil to roast it?

  • Yes, sure!

  • YUM!

  • This is very interesting! There was a similar system here in Korea called "ondol" where the fireplace was on one side of the house and the chimney was on the other, so the heat would flow through channels under the floor before venting, and thus you heat the house while you cook. Modern houses still use ondol heating, but it's done by circulating hot water under the floor.

  • So, they cook food and heat the house at the same time?

  • That's interesting. Explains remarks I have come across in 19th century Russian novels when people are referred to as 'Sleeping above the stove'! Interesting series.

  • A huge heatsink, that stores heat instead of sending it all up the chimney....

Thanks for sharing these videos. Fun to see ;)
