Though the musicianship of the Sugar Hill version is far superior, this original version has a real punky/garage-y feel to it. I only just heard it for the 1st time, on Huey Morgan's 6 Music show.......top tune.
@Chameleonardodavinci The Sugar Hill version is the track 'White Lines' by Grandmaster Melle Mel. The in-house band were Doug Wimbish (bass), Keith Le Blanc (drums), & Skip McDonald (guitar) - otherwise known as 'Tackhead'.
@worddeep3 Nah, that's a popular misconception. It was Mel Glover (Melle Mel) who wrote the lyrics, & rapped on 'White Lines'.......Flash had left the fold, the previous year in 1982.
@worddeep3 Nah, on it's release in 83 it was credited to 'Grandmaster & Melle Mel'. Subsequent releases ('Beat Street' & 'We Don't Work For Free') were credited to 'Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious 5. The last Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 release was 'Scorpio' (1982).
My reference to 'Sugar Hill' concerned the label/stable they were from, & not to the 'Sugar Hill Gang' per se.
The in-house band of Wimbish, Le Blanc, & McDonald played on all the labels releases.
Hey now, the Grand Master's version wasn't rubbish, & I know plenty of breakers (including myself) that (while the original is best) respect The Grand Master's version!
Real masterpiece from real master Spike Lee. Edward Norton shines here. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Pepper, Rosario Dawson and Anna Paquin did an excellent job too.
why ae that didn't have a instrumental version?

@DaigojiGai Yea it sounds good, but it is all borrowed (read: ripped-off) Remind me what instrument Melle Mel played?
larryjeeves 1 year ago
@larryjeeves it's not ripped off it's the original.
YourTubeSpellChecker 1 year ago
@YourTubeSpellChecker The Original rip-off? I just mashed up my ringtone on my phone, I am ORIGINAL!
larryjeeves 1 year ago
@DaigojiGai Sorry I agree with larryjeeves, Melle Mel ripped this off big time, and those silly horns he put in there were just lame.
