This is my all-time favorite song by this group. It turns out I have many other favorites by them: "Tin Man" "You Can Do Magic", "Sister Golden Hair" "Lonely People", and "Ventura Highway". One NON-favorite - "A Horse with no Name".
Most emphatically, I dismiss the notion that "America" ripped off CSN&Y. Listen again more closely and to more song selections. They do have their own unique style. I would agree that they were influenced by them. Everyone is influenced by someone who came before them. Acoustic guitars and rustic folksy singing harmonies. Yes there are similarities, and enough differences to set them apart. Even CSN&Y could envy America's first two albums, which neither had one weak song on it. My opinion, sure.
This is probably one of the best "long intro" songs you'll ever hear. Often with many songs I find that trait to be boring and even fatal to a song's quality. But these guys made it work for this one. No complaints here. All accolades. Most "America" tunes defy category. Certainly not jazz or blues, not quite rock or country, "folksy", but not as traditional folk music, though they do have that warm familiarity of such music, not exactly crossover either but I'm sure they do. See next post.
Thanks for posting such a great album. This to me is music and a time when the only thing that mattered was when the next great song would be out. Thanks for the memories !
Love Beckley, Peek and Bunnell! I remember this song as one of the first I heard on the car radio after I got my driver's license in '72. And it's still a great song almost 40 years later.
@rivertothesea yeah, i noticed all the America originals had been taken down and only covers or modern videos of the band playing out at new gigs remained. Probably some copyright thing....we better enjoy these before they are taken off youtube aagain

This was our go-to for driving across Nevada throughout the '70's and '80s. Desert music for the angels...

"America" the band, perfect balance and harmony, so soothing. "America the country" can't balance or harmonize anything.;>)

Thank you, what a great song. America wasn't simply great, they had a special song-writing ability that crosses generations.
