FYI: The library is 8 stories plus a basement level. The upper 3-4 floors are reserved for students ONLY and children are only allowed in certain areas. Actually, the place is mind-blowing (f'ing HUGE), and was among the first of its kind in the country. Many other universities around the U.S. and in Europe have followed suit, using SJSU's library as a model. It's worked out very well for the students and the community, and it's used and respected by researchers from all across the globe.

What are the hard facts? It's a fact SJCC has acquired the title commuter school more than any other University. It's a fact that we have our own library. It's a fact that more people think our campus is nicer than yours. It's a fact that the difference between our incoming GPA average is 0.02. It's a fact that our students and alumni show up to games to support the school.
The same is true of SJSU. Weren't you paying attention? According to every housing survey ever conducted at SJSU, close to 15k students live in rented apts and houses in the surrounding neighborhood. This has been true for the last 15-20 years at least. Add in the 3.5-4k who live on campus or in Greek houses, and you've got close to 20k students who DON'T actually commute. The only people who call SJSU a commuter school are people who don't go there and/or students who commute.
Regarding the .02 GPA difference for incoming freshmen, all that tells me is the Fresno public school system is a joke since the average SJSU freshman scored a 990 on the SAT and the avg Fresneck freshman scored a 923. The 990 kids are obviously attending tougher high schools. You have to look at a STANDARDIZED test like the SAT to really know which students are more academically gifted. Right now, SJSU kids are scoring 65-70 points higher on the EXACT SAME TEST the Fresneck kids are taking.
The SAT's are a joke. They have 7th grade math and 8th grade English in them. The first time I took them i got an 850 because I didn't know what to expect. I had to jog my memory back to jr high and early HS years and the second time i got a 1200. They are about to drop the SAT from college applications.
The joint city/university library model is catching on around the country and in Europe. Again, there are designated areas for kids and the upper floors are reserved for SJSU students, research and quiet study ONLY. This model has worked out very well for the university. Our library is the largest newly-built library west of the Mississippi. It contains 1.5 millions books, and many special collections. The kid factor simply isn't an issue.
When our library gets finished it will have more books than any other Cal State School. This according to the newspaper i read a months ago. But you might lead the west coast in children's books.

Yes they do. Elementary schools have their own libraries. Little kids are in school during the day anyway, and don't come downtown to use the SJSU library. One final note. Google "northern california college tours" and click on the top listing. Read the write-ups about each school. The summaries were prepared using data from USNWR and the Princeton Review. Pay special attention to the admissions (selectivity) stats and campus atmosphere descriptions including on-campus resident stats and number of commuter students. That's the ultimate irony in all this: Fresno is probably more of a commuter school than SJSU!
Another thing I noticed is that you share your library with the public, just another commuter community college thing to do. It must be hell for your students to study next to snot-nosed kids and 70 year old creeps.
Actually, it distinctly states only 1k FCC students live on campus (that # is closer to 4k at SJSU), and that MOST FCC students "commute from HOME." Also, it suggests the "commuter" tag often given to SJS is at least debatable since many "students live in rented housing in the area." Surveys show this # is actually in the 10-15k range, which means roughly 15-20k SJS students (50-65% of the student body) DON'T commute. In other words, MOST FCC students commute, and most SJ students DON'T commute.
So what? Fresneck didn't even pull in half as much as SJSU did last year. Yeah... first time we beat out SDSU and the other big boys for top honors, but certainly not the first time we beat out FCC. Actually, I DID do my research and SJSU owns Fresneck in the financial department, remember? If you read the article, you saw SJSU has already received over $5m for '08 and it's only the 1st week of Feb. That's about 1/4 of what FCC pulled in the entire year last year. Face reality.

FYI: The library is 8 stories plus a basement level. The upper 3-4 floors are reserved for students ONLY and children are only allowed in certain areas. Actually, the place is mind-blowing (f'ing HUGE), and was among the first of its kind in the country. Many other universities around the U.S. and in Europe have followed suit, using SJSU's library as a model. It's worked out very well for the students and the community, and it's used and respected by researchers from all across the globe.

What are the hard facts? It's a fact SJCC has acquired the title commuter school more than any other University. It's a fact that we have our own library. It's a fact that more people think our campus is nicer than yours. It's a fact that the difference between our incoming GPA average is 0.02. It's a fact that our students and alumni show up to games to support the school.

This has been true for the last 15-20 years at least. Add in the 3.5-4k who live on campus or in Greek houses, and you've got close to 20k students who DON'T actually commute. The only people who call SJSU a commuter school are people who don't go there and/or students who commute.

Regarding the .02 GPA difference for incoming freshmen, all that tells me is the Fresno public school system is a joke since the average SJSU freshman scored a 990 on the SAT and the avg Fresneck freshman scored a 923. The 990 kids are obviously attending tougher high schools. You have to look at a STANDARDIZED test like the SAT to really know which students are more academically gifted. Right now, SJSU kids are scoring 65-70 points higher on the EXACT SAME TEST the Fresneck kids are taking.

The SAT's are a joke. They have 7th grade math and 8th grade English in them. The first time I took them i got an 850 because I didn't know what to expect. I had to jog my memory back to jr high and early HS years and the second time i got a 1200. They are about to drop the SAT from college applications.

The joint city/university library model is catching on around the country and in Europe. Again, there are designated areas for kids and the upper floors are reserved for SJSU students, research and quiet study ONLY. This model has worked out very well for the university. Our library is the largest newly-built library west of the Mississippi. It contains 1.5 millions books, and many special collections. The kid factor simply isn't an issue.

So you see, 53% of SJSU students come from Santa Clara County (where SJSU is located). 56% of Fresneck students are from Fresno County (where FCC is located). 1,000 Fresno students (4%) live on campus. 3,500 SJS students (11%) live on campus. There is an extremely popular restaurant in town named Dog House Grill across the University. The Mcdonalds, Jack in the Box, Taco Bell, Wendy's, and Burger King are all in Bulldog theme with neon logos, tile decorations, fresno state cups, Fresno State mats, and countless other decorations. Living at home with your parents and commuting to school is the same whether you drive 5 miles or 20 miles. What's your point? Actually, the fact that SC County is so large might mean more would-be commuters have chosen to live on campus or downtown close to campus, but not at home with their parents. FC, on the other hand, because it's smaller, means most hometown residents (56%) probably live with their mommies and daddies.

... and let's not forget we lead the WAC with the most number of players (104) sent to the NFL. In fact, SJSU is the only WAC team to make the list of top-10 mid-majors in this category. SDSU is #1, by the way, and one of only two CSU's (along with SJSU) to make the top 10. Distinguished history? Yes.

Fresno State CURRENTLY as the most players in the NFL. You forget SJSCC is just an extension of San Jose's publich school system. A school very little people take pride in, a school most are ashamed to say they were a part of, a school that shares their facilities with the local elementary.

Yes they do. Elementary schools have their own libraries. Little kids are in school during the day anyway, and don't come downtown to use the SJSU library. The upper floors are reserved for SJSU students only. Plus, little kids are only allowed to go into specific areas. It's an awesome facility. You don't know what you're talking about.

One final note. Google "northern california college tours" and click on the top listing. Read the write-ups about each school. The summaries were prepared using data from USNWR and the Princeton Review. Pay special attention to the admissions (selectivity) stats and campus atmosphere descriptions including on-campus resident stats and number of commuter students. That's the ultimate irony in all this: Fresno is probably more of a commuter school than SJSU!

The article distinctly says SJSU is more of a commuter school.
To prove that SJSU is closer to Fresno State. GPA for Fresno 3.15 and GPA for SJSU 3.17
An amazing 0.02 difference.

Another thing I noticed is that you share your library with the public, just another commuter community college thing to do. It must be hell for your students to study next to snot-nosed kids and 70 year old creeps.

Actually, it distinctly states only 1k FCC students live on campus (that # is closer to 4k at SJSU), and that MOST FCC students "commute from HOME." Also, it suggests the "commuter" tag often given to SJS is at least debatable since many "students live in rented housing in the area." Surveys show this # is actually in the 10-15k range, which means roughly 15-20k SJS students (50-65% of the student body) DON'T commute. In other words, MOST FCC students commute, and most SJ students DON'T commute.

So what? Fresneck didn't even pull in half as much as SJSU did last year. Yeah... first time we beat out SDSU and the other big boys for top honors, but certainly not the first time we beat out FCC. Actually, I DID do my research and SJSU owns Fresneck in the financial department, remember? If you read the article, you saw SJSU has already received over $5m for '08 and it's only the 1st week of Feb. That's about 1/4 of what FCC pulled in the entire year last year. Face reality.
