I wish they had made the actress who plays Katherine of Aragon turn to look at Henry with a hurt face when the narrator says "declared their marriage invalid"
Gotta agree - Katherine is the only monarch worth noting. She was AWESOME!!!!
But also have to say that I'm understanding Mad, Mad Mary a little bit better, too. She always struck me as "church crazy", a zealot. But it makes sense that she would go catholic-crazy after watching her father use and discard so many women, including her, and get away with it because of his "new" religion. Can't blame her for thinking it was evil - she swung too far to the other side with the religious killings.
I have to say, so far this episode reveals Ann in a very different light than the "Days that shook the world" episode of her execution. That one portrayed her as devout and modest, whereas this one is painting her in a selfish, superficial, and disdainful light.
It is no wonder that Mary acted the way she did while she ruled! Honestly could you amagine how horrible it must have been? Young, your Mother sent away, and living with under a manipulative stepmother.
@adamlove4774 I doubt she burned the Protestants merely because of her mother's fate. She was a religion fanatic for her the Catholic faith was the true faith, Protestants and non-Catholics alike were heretics she believed she was saving them from a faith worse then death. Her reputation as Bloody is unjust she didn't do anything uncommon in that time period. She burned 280or300 people while Henry VIII executed 72,000+ during his 37 years reign.
@2011stockholm Yeah right, at least she gave birth to the best queen ever: ELIZABETH I. Catherine gave birth to that ugly evil bitch who only ruled for 5 years
@gaiuskaiser Yes with no offspring, yet this allowed the crown to pass to her nearest relative, uniting England with Wales, and Scotland in a personal union. It is a tenuous balancing act between good and bad consequences.
@gaiuskaiser You're right. "Bloody Bess" would have been a more appropriate title than "Good Queen Bess." Elizabeth, like her father, liked to make Catholic martyrs, usually by drawing and quartering.
@gaiuskaiser Er--what?! Uh, NO. Mary is a complicated character & does not deserve to be written off as JUST Bloody Mary, but the fact remains that she had 300+ people burned at the stake for their religion, horrifying & alienating her own people. Elizabeth did NOTHING of the sort. I have no idea where you're getting this "Ooooh, Elizabeth was just as bad" but you're wrong. She burned no one at the stake & even her most notorious execution (her cousin Mary), she agonized over.
@NYCBlonde Stop getting your history from movies. Elizabeth did, in fact, burn people at the stake her victims were just fewer than her sister's. John Wielmacker (also known as Jan Pieterss) and Hendrick Ter Woort, were burned at the stake for heresy at Smithfield on July 22nd, 1575. Some time between 1595 and 1597 (the date is cut off in the source), Isabel Cockie was condemned as a witch and burned at the stake. For context Elizabeth I reigned from 1558 until 1603.
@NYCBlonde Who says, that's the question. Did anyone here see she was upset over Mary's execution? Just remember history is NOT the fact always. It's recorded by people some biased some not but the winner got the prestige. Anne screwed her chance but her daughter didn't. I always felt she was LUCKY too. Mary was wronged there' someone down there has explained it well. If any of those dictator in history won I'm sure the history would be praising them now too!
Elizabeth was not the monarch that earlier historians made her out to be, as a host of recent scholarly works reveal how she presided over the brutal deaths of over 4,000 Catholics in Ireland alone, left England in a sorry economic state at the time of her death, and constantly deferred to her male advisors as opposed to making any decisions on her own. Mary in her youth was far more attractive than Elizabeth, and she chose to spare most of the people who supported Jane Grey.
@JesusChacin9 Don't say that. Queen Mary I would have been a great queen if she never experienced all those horrible acts done to her, such as being separated from her mother, being alone, and always striving to win her father's affection. She was always been forsaken all her life. We can't really blame her for those action. Henry ruined a lot of lives...I'm glad a women ruled England and led them to the golden age instead of a man.
@JesusChacin9 aw, i don't think mary was evil for no reason. she must've been hurt seeing her mother un-queen-ed and died...i think she blamed the Protestants~~~~~~~plus since Catherine was said to be beautiful, I don't think she'd be ugly
Your knowledge of Tudor history seems to come from a public school education. The REAL Mary Tudor was actually beautiful. She was declared a bastard by her own Father, she wasn't allowed to see her Mother and she wasn't even allowed to attend her Mother's funeral! She also saw her faith being destroyed. Have you heard of The Pilgrimage of Grace? If not, you should read up on it! You disgust me! You insult someone without knowing the real facts!
@princessivoryrose By public school, do you mean state education, because public school in England means fee-paying. And for that matter, be careful about insulting those who were educated in the state syste, as was David Starkey, I believe.
@lamenzies Public school during Starky's time was good, not like today which are overflowing with ghetto blacks, third world immigrants and other people who have their own agendas. So there is a difference between now and then.
Mary was declared a bastard, her life was threatened various times, she was deprived of her Mother. She wasn't allowed to attend her Mother's funeral, she was forced to be a servant to her own sister. She saw her Father go through 6 wives/women as if they were nothing but objects. She was mentally abused by her stepmother while she was going through her adolescence and she was neglected and left to become an old maid. Yet you have the nerve to call her names!
One more thing! Anne Boleyn wrote a letter of apology to Mary before she was executed. She felt bad for her mistreatment of Mary. Anne Boleyn finally saw the monster that Henry VIII was! Henry had to have known that the accusations against Anne Boleyn were false! He also had Anne Boleyn buried in an arrow box because he forgot have a coffin made for her.
As your You Tube name reveals, you are a morally reprehensible person who can only use filthy swear words in your responses. Did you at least complete high school (not that this is such a great achievement these days, given our public school system). I find it remarkable that liberals such as yourself PRAISE men who treat their wives cruelly if the women happen to be Catholic or something else that you despise. This is hypocrisy at its worst, go hang out with Anthony Weiner.
The narrator, David Starky, has also written many very good and entertaining books about England's history. His 2 books written as an overview of its history from pre-roman times thru the 20th century are particularly interesting- I've read them twice "just because" and will no doubt read them again. He also did a terrific book about Elizabeth I and the whole rise of freedom in religion, which is a very important part of our heritage/ birth of democracy etc. Thanks for sharing these vids!
