  • I love Moyo, I will buy her book and have a read. Her book is £6.19 on Amazon

  • MOYO NOT BONO FOR AFRICA

  • What is the reason of this interview? Moyo's life or the ideas on her book?

  • If you're criticizing the interview as being dry: seriously, what else did you expect from CSPAN? Brian Lamb is a dry interviewer and sometimes asks obvious questions, yes, but he is better than Peter Robinson, who usually just fawns over his guests and seeks to validate their every point.

  • Dead Aid as a book is poisnous for Africa.

  • @austinvital How so? could you explain?

  • @blueiguy1 Have you read Dead Aid?

  • @austinvital No not yet but i get conflicting reviews but I will read it . She makes great points but I will have to look at the book first before i make judgement.

  • @blueiguy1 YU better read it first. It is really poison for Africa.

  • He look like trying to find fault with her...the whole interview without a single smile...

  • this lady speaks so eloquently, full of logic.. she is a smart gal

  • There is so much injustice in the world caused by fools. Commonsense has fled from our societies. Political correctness has stolen our free speech. Western waste condemns millions of third world people to suffering and the needless deaths of helpless children and others. Religious vilification laws now take us back to the dark ages. How have we come to throw out good sense, free speech and reason for waffle, doubletalk and foolishness? History will truly condemn us as we condemn the suffering.

  • when she says 'there is no evidence of aid helping african countries developing' ...is she not ignoring the case of botswana...botswona needed aid initially to help them on the road to taking advantage of their diamonds... yes, they promoted free markets n became more self-sufficient ...but it wasn't like they ignored aid...aid played an importent part in getting them started...and from then on, good governance, free markets and their diamonds hve helped the country to grow.

  • is it me, or this interviewer doesnt seem to know even the obvious, "why they build roads", "do they just leave them there" *rolling eyes*

Also "when did you exactly think of writing this book" ???? lol why is the purpose of asking this question. I dont know, just listening to him all i can imagine is this narrow minded, limited person... i cant help it

  • @suedash i was thinking the exact same thing! his questions are pointless.

  • is it me, or this interviewer doesnt seem to know even the obvious, "why they build roads", "do they just leave them there" *rolling eyes*

Also when did you exactly think of writing this book ???? lol

  • is it me, or this interviewer doesnt seem to know even the obvious, "why they build roads", "do they just leave them there" *rolling eyes*

  • She is on the money on all fronts. No pun intended..

  • Say it like it is sister !!!

Why the west has a single economic model in relation with Eastern Europe ,Asia, South America and a completely different model when its come to Africa?.

My answer is undeniable racial bigotry

  • there should be aid to develop mining etc, but company would rather keep all the profits for themselves, wouldn't it be crazy if say most of the diamond money went back to Africa?

  • I think Dambisa Moyo is the new ~(and better) Mother Terisa.

  • @AndyWhite007 Quite the opposite.Africa is already made into a cult of human suffering and misery to attract donations from the West.Much like what Mother Teresa made out of all Third World countries in her career.

Even worse, Mother Teresa is one of the people responsible for the current situation in Africa.

Moyo on the other hand points out that all the foreign aid turned the continent into a giant "Cargo Cult".

  • @joakeimmcgrath Hhmm and I thought Mother Teresa's work was in India.

  • @Lily2U1515 She herself was mostly in India, but her order ran a number of missions around the world, including Africa.Besides, she was the first to market this cult of misery and human suffering in the 3rd world.

  • @joakeimmcgrath I grew up choking down dinner while starving Biafran babies were paraded across the television screen, not by Mother Teresa and not in Africa, I would probably point to that mass media coverage of that experience as a cultural swing in the misery and suffering market

  • @Lily2U1515 Well, technically that old bitch and others affiliated with the Catholic Church were the ones that started parading those starving 3rd world babies in the adds and tv commercials across the western world.

  • I don't like the way this guy is asking question. He is entrogating Moyo. She is very gracious and answers every stupid question this guy is asking. What has population of Zambia or father's occupation has anything to do with issue of Aid to Africa? This guy is very condescending.

  • @yakmanok My take on his sometimes/often disjointed line of questions is 1) he's trying to cover a lot of ground in a given amount of time, 2) that's because there's so much people don't know about Dambisa herself, her ideas, and about Africa in general.

I thought he was trying to educate the general viewer - like me - and did a good job. He was detached; I'll give you that, but he wasn't mean or confrontational like some. Anyway that was my take. Have a good one!

  • I am glad Damisa Moyo has caused everyone to be thinking again. Jeffrey Sachs is scared and so are the recipients who dont do anything with the money that they receive.

  • Brilliant Lady.......an epitomy of a strong intelligent beautiful African woman

  • I could see in her eyes the passion she has for Africa. She's such an intelligent lady that's worth listening to. I'm glad that she's getting so much media coverage. I only hope that other Africans doing great things out there would have the opportunity of showing themselves to the world. I love you Dambisa!!!

  • Nothing less than INSPIRING she is an example of what all non blacks fear and what all blacks should inspire to be. Her points are correct even when he tried to distort them, she brought him back on track. She needs our support, I wish her well and hope her message takes off.

  • This guy is such an ass, he refuses to ask pertinent questions that would enlighten the ignorant audience.

  • Wow, she called the countries she oversaw with Goldman Sachs her fiefdom. These bankers really do see themselves as the Lords of the world.

  • Apologies if my statement will offend;

The problem is Africa is in large part, responsability of the African, the "White powers" only took advantage of the situation , we Africans should stop fighting each other, have you realised that the fight is not one African country against another, but internal conlicts? want an example? have a look at Angola, so rich and severely abused by external sources.

  • @MrJazAfonso Seconded.

  • Interesting. They should have offered her water. I'm thirsty for her.... rude

  • Given the apparent lack of preparation by the interviewer, Dambisa handled this interview exceedingly well.

  • CSPAN has failed at this interview, which had so much potential. Clearly, this interviewer has not read the book so only asks dumb surface questions like, "where do you live now?" "what do you think about celebrities in Africa?" Dumbness.

  • Too true Amunication, too true. If you gave me a fishing rod and I was trapped on some desert island with no access to a place to fish I would definitely use it as firewood. The point is, if you're going to come under the guise of assisting me at least let the help be relevant.

BTW - I see you are based in Australia, am thinking I might like to send you a pair of ski boots to use over there - for christmas maybe :-)

  • an amazing woman!! amazing, yet controversial, aid philosophy ideas... overall I agree that Africa would just need of Moyo, much less of Bono!! its a must read book!

  • This guys is a moron, has no clue and is busy lusting after her to think rationally. Bastard...reduced from the brilliance of this woman!

  • Don't trust this black face being used by the white power of Europe/America. She currently working for a Swedish/Canadian oil company and she also so worked for the world bank and Goldman Sachs. The only thing for Africa that is going to work is total nationalism kick out all whites and Asians. Then with the help from Africans in America and the rest of the west help build Africa with a African consciousness and control. Establish African banks and markets.

  • Dumbest thing I ever heard. Clearly you know nothing about what's going on in the aid industry within Africa, and you assume somehow an invisible 'black brotherhood' between all Africans, and even African descendants in Africa?

  • I know quite clearly what's going! Until white power government organization and etc is eliminated from Africa the problems will consist. The only thing America/Europe and now Asia cares when it comes to Africa is getting the resources to build and maintain themselves.

  • Strangely, I agree more with what you said in your reply than your first post. Apologies, I got caught of guard by and reacted to your vocal nationalism, which I still have some contentions with, but as a whole, I agree that 'aid' is a capitalist industry that is simply a veneer fir sucking Africa dry of its riches. Control of economy should be in African hands. Problem is Moyo agrees as well, so I'm not sure why you contest her. Careful not to assume politics will be gone along with 'Whites'.

  • Her plan is to be apart of the global market and I don't agree! America/Europe controls the global market world banks world trade organization Un security council and etc. They run China Japan and the Asian economic powers because if American consumers don't buy from them down goes their economies. Africa need its own banks backed by gold diamonds and etc. They need to set their own prices. They need their own Army to let the whites know its a new day.

  • The developed nation and rising economies also have vested interests in the African continent.Africa is still colonized in the name of "Free trade",IMF loans etc. There will be a surge in the prices of food stock and other commodities,if all countries develop.

  • I don't give a damn about the so-called developed nation or their so-called rising economies. I'm concerned about the survive of African people on the continent and worldwide in the present and the future. The western nation and now Asian nation aren't concerned about that. Their concerned about their own. They all must leave Africa one way or the other. African people are in a one a on going Holocaust from about 2000yrs ago.

  • Africa can be rescued from poverty and despotic rule by its own people.Intellectual people in Africa should come forward and try to influence the policies of their government. There should be more room for democracy and investments.Africa has the potential to become developed.

  • There is all ready been investment in Africa. The western white powers have been doing this the past 600yrs up til now and now the Asian are doing the same thing. Africans don't need foreign investment all the resources are all ready there. Foreign investment means that the foreigners IE western whites Arabs and Asians will be controlling everything.

  • You talk about Democracy! I'm about Africans coming up with their own thing with our own consciousness. In our African history we've had great civilization and empires such as Egypt Nubia Ethiopia Songhai Mali Ghana and etc that were ran with our own system of family structure law government and etc.

  • I'm tired of people thinking that African people have to want or be approved by the white man and everything he deems right and correct. We have our minds and history to go off. We where great before the whites and arabs came to Africa. We can be great today and tomorrow. It has to be at our own self determination not the white man arab Chinese or any other people.

  • You are a proud person of African heritage.I appreciate that.I wish that the politicians in the continent also think like you.The people who want to change their country live abroad enjoying the sound life in the West.

  • There's no sound life in the west. Its all about materialism and humanity is out the window. America is suppose to be the best so-called country in the history of the planet. Its has more people in jails and prison than any country in the world. China and India has triple the people. America stills have more people in prison. America has so many laws. I've been told and understand why there's so many laws because there's corruption at the of government and money elite.

  • This lady wants to keep Africa and its people in the hands of Europeans Arabs and now Asian who have devastated African people and their land going on 2000yrs. To hell with her and other African sellout who belief this message. She doesn't talk about a army to protect Africa made up of Africans and controlled only by Africans for our survival today and tomorrow.

  • @arronnov

Do you think that aid is sustainable? Even if it was, the Africans will never be able to survive. Every other nation has developed though either its internal governance or by becoming a net recipient of FDI. Africa would decline further should the west retreat; the majority of the nations simply lack the ability to reform the economies without input from Western or even Asian nations.

  • @606dan2580 Africa wouldn't be in the condition its in now if it wasn't for the west aka white man and western Asian Arab. I know this is hard to belief for the enemies of African people worldwide. My ancestors had empires and civilization that existed long than Europe and America combine by 10000 of thousand of yrs. The Egyptian Nubians Ethiopians Zimbabweans Ashanti Songhai Zulu and etc. We did this all with the help of outsiders!

  • @arronnov You are such a deluded person. Firstly let me stress, this has nothing to do with race. The 'white man' and 'black man' makes no difference when referring to this issue.

You are referring to a period of time around 2000 years ago. Such ancient issues play no role in the operation of your domestic economy. During that period of time the population was far lower. However, Africans choose to have high fertility rates with a total disregard to the conditions in which their children ....

  • @606dan2580 I'm not deluded at all! I understand the relationship and history of African people with people outside of Africa the past 2000yrs to the present.

  • @606dan2580 The past represent the present! The lady wants Africans to let outsiders to keep controlling the resources economies politics and etc. The things she doesn't seem to mention every is that Africa has all the resources and don't need outsiders so-called investment capitol or money. Africans can do this all themselves because they do have their own resources. They can take their time but yet still 100% control their own destiny.

  • @arronnov I beg to differ. Sub-Saharan Africa has very few resources, and subsequently survives on aid.

Self sufficiency isn't sustainable. Just look at the case of North Korea; mass poverty, low life expectancy and a low standard of living. Much life Africa in its current state. However, following 'Africans doing this themselves' this problem would worsen.

How are the farms doing in Zimbabwe at the moment without the 'white man'?

  • @arronnov. Where are African nations going to get the capital to develop their precious metals and mining industry? The same goes for manufacturing and other value-added sectors as well. In fact, Iran, at the moment, despite having numerous gas reserves hasn't seen great development due to limited FDI, You need that for significant economic growth in a world, where the disparity between African nations and those of the West is greater than ever before.

  • @606dan2580 Let me not forget that the Nile valley civilization is responsible for all the known disciplines of sciences maths music agriculture laws and etc. A course the western white man tells you nothing came from Africa but he can't stay out of Africa trying to find his beginnings on the planet. For clarification the ancient Egyptian were indigenous black Africans. I know how the white man has tried his best to place the ancient Egyptian outside of Africa.

  • @arronnov are bought up in. Why are totally missing my point here. I am not talking about one country individually, I am referring to the lack of the domestic economy. Increases in aid only temporarily benefit the nations, they don't provide a foundation for the countries to escape the poverty trap. Investment on the other hand has a totally different role to play. Investment allows resources to be best allocated in ways in which efficiency is maximised. Aid cuts jobs and restricts development.

  • @606dan2580 If Africans don't control the rules banks and etc. Then their fucked because outsiders can dictate policy in Africa like they already do. The current condition Africa doesn't control European American or Asian markets. Guess who controls the prices for these resources outsiders.

  • @606dan2580 I'm not do with aid at all! She says in this video that Chinese invest in Africa. That's right but the Chines use Chines works. Africans don't need Chinese workers there's plenty of labor in Africa that can do the work. As far as education and skill being taught. There are so many Africans in diaspora that my African sister and bothers be educated and trained to insure whats in the best interest for Africa and not the west or china.

  • Everybody want whats in the land of Africa and what African people produce in the western world. Our self determination in their minds is for their survive not ours. That shit has to cease or their will not be any African people let the way these beast are killing my people in Africa Americas and worldwide. Theirs a evil on the planet that needs to be taken out.

  • This lady is worried about the global world instead of African people first. She wants my sisters and bothers to join a system that has damaged them so much. A system that their don't control or make the rules. She's not about African self determination. If she was she would be talking about Africans making their own system that benefit them first with their own African consciousness instead of a Western white one or Asian.

  • Those consciousness means the survival of the white man and Asian man first above the survival of African people. Fuck that! The history and results are shown to African people daily when where more concerned about others survival first over our own. Where the one's dying in mass number daily monthly and yearly. These other groups don't give a damn just keep the resources coming and keep African people making music playing sports and producing for other groups.

  • Dr. John Henry Clark said once that white's don't have to do things against us because they will send African people represent white power. This lady has worked for the world bank Goldman Sachs and now she serves on the board of Lundin Petroleum out of Sweden. I don't trust her! She wants Africans to trust and believe in a system from people who have been oppressing African people over 1500yrs. I say Africans set and make their own markets with their rules and laws. We had them before on our own!

  • Dambisa spoke eloquently and is clearly a highly intelligent individual. This Q&A sessions came across like a bad job interview. The interviewer seemed like a doddering idiot and persisted in asking Provoking and controversial questions. African leaders Should be held accountable and we as Africans should be allowed to develop our countries without the interference of artificial aid

  • The interviewer did not ask many questions about her book or the ideas in her book.

This is the worst job of interviewing I have heard in a long time.

  • @Rangerpjonwebx Yeah, more like an interrogation..

  • Looking at the problem from the perspective of healing, Dambisa Moyo is spot on as the first step in healing or "kingdom of heaven" as Jesus and other healers across space and time have preached is within oneself. It is not out there. One can never walk until the clutches are put aside and the first hesitant, tentative steps are taken. Thank you.

  • This is nothing new to us, the Eritrean government has been perusing this idea from 1974, during the struggle years.

"Eritrea - Isaias Afewerki in 1974 (Self Reliance)."

I think the President should write a book.

  • go to china moyo, cuz even the americans are asking help from the chinese, so dont waste your time on losers.

  • ask chinese, the solution is in the east

  • Dambi might have compromise her title to Dead Aid rather than Blood Aid which I firmly beilieve could have receive a lot of criticizm from the west.

Aid is an opium to African Development.

  • The interviewer is asking too many questions not related to her book. I got the book today and was hoping to hear her talk about it. I am disappointed!

  • This interviewer clearly has NO idea what Ms Moyo is talking about , so he's asking her idiotic questions about wheres shes from, what her parents do etc.....seriously, he's embarrassing himself

Its great to hear an African perspective on Africa in a debate dominated by westerners! Good for her!!!

  • this white asswhole make me throw up. Go Dambisa we with you sister

  • Botswana? A free market capitalistic country? How about the government trying to evict the Bushmen from their homelands to make way for DeBeers? How is that free market?

In a Free Market, Capitalistic system, there CANNOT be any govt. coercion. Look up the case of the Bushmen in Botswana, people! Let's delineate here what IS capitalism and what IS NOT capitalism.

  • I absolutely disagree with your argument.

  • Good.

  • Brilliant interview. Totally agree with a lot of points she raises. Aid indeed has been an easy way out for a lot of leaders whose focus is actually not the long term and wider benefit of the continent. Sadly for the average African we do have that dependency syndrome which makes us, as individuals and invariably as a continent, perceive the rest of the world as owing us. Weaning ourselves from this dependency is going to be an extremely uphill struggle but one that is desperately needed.

  • I do have to say though that I dont think the Chinese model is necessarily the one we should be following. Yes the Chinese have contributed to the African infrastructure but it's in as much the same way as the West did when they initially came into Africa - they do have vested interests. In addition there is still a huge population of very poor Chinese people in China inspite of the growth. Africa, purely through it's resources holds an immense amount of power but doesnt seem to recognise it.

  • What Africa needs is psychological growth, we need to stop putting our leaders on pedestals and make them accountable, review the terms under which the rest of the world does business with Africa, realise that, if the truth be told, most countries that give aid to Africa do so purely for self-serving reasons, see ourselves as equal partners in the various trade negotiations we do, provide opportunities to our people in order to harness our intellectual capital so we can start to innovate.

  • 'psychological growth'.....

    Well said

  • Was anyone else annoyed by that interviewer? I think Damibisa did a great job of managing his questions.

  • yeah it was a bit condescending. i mean we don't care about her background. get to the meat of the argument

  • Coming from the same town as Bob Geldoff and Bono, whose tremendous efforts and compassion I appreciate, I am nevertheless eager to listen to Dambisa and explore the possibilities she suggests in finding real and sustainable solutions to what is arguably one of the most shameful reflections on all of us as a human race.

Let's not try to silence her, but let us engage in one of the fundamental principles of communication... and listen.

  • How refreshing to hear somone intelligent, beautiful, and articulate express some concrete opinions on options for a better way, without engaging in emotional sensationalism. The way she is approaching this subject is one of the most tried and tested and successful - through dialogue, rather than debate. I think there is hope that she may become a presence that will engender some serious critical thinking around finding solutions instead of winning arguments or for political gain.

  • Give a child a fish, he'll eat for a day

Teach a child to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime

  • She's brilliant and right on the money. 'Long term economic growth in a meaningful and aggressive manner' AID is not going to do that.

    Tayo

  • Dambisa is brilliant and controversial. But, her relationship with Prof Sachs has to be negative - he's a Statist. Encouraging the issuing of Government Bonds through her work at Goldman Sach is inherently inflationary. This doesn't matter for this aid debate. She'll be attacked by the left for being absolutely correct on the issue of foreign aid. Her message is very important. I love it!

  • I'm encouraged by the fact that she has spoken out against Prof. Sachs. I'm looking forward to reading her book.

  • Dambisa is fantastic!

  • Good arguments, persuasive and intelligent. May the world have more of you. Kagame is not a model of good leadership though Dambisa.

  • I am African. She is bright, but Prof Sachs & Dr Tadataka, are brighter. She is very good at controlling the conversation and slipping in hot button comments. I would recommend that an African state pilots her ideas, but people are involved (people born into an infrastructure ridden with povery & curruption). I did not elect Moyo as my representative. The people of africa are not happy to be guinea pigs or pawns... The amount of aid given misses the issue.

  • She's right on the money, excuse the play with words. The facts are there and I don't think she's saying she's speaking for anyone; just questioning the accepted status

    Tayo

  • " The people of africa are not happy to be guinea pigs "

As opposed to the guinea pigs they became for the various autocratic, marxist and one-party state rulers who came after independence?

  • To "DoIsoundLikecare", do you think that being African gives you the right to insult an African scholar who raises important issues about African development? And further more, how is Sachs and Tadataka's intelligence relevant to the issue at hand? Please move beyond your jealousy and ego and at least CONSIDER what Dr. Moyo has to say for a second. Certain types of foreign aid may not be the ONLY factors impeding African growth, but they certainly are a source of problems...read the book, idiot.

  • Well said Oldyed.

  • How nice. You make me chuckle oldyed. I may be a lot of things, an idiot isn't one of them ;-). Insult all you like, but try to recognize that even by Moyo's guess Africa has received $1 trillion in half a century. To put that into perspective ~$1.5 trillion is shifted each day (yes each day) in world money markets (see the HD Report of 1999 on Globalization). Don't underestimate me because I've bothered to reply to you - I think its fair enough to share mutual respect, even on YouTube.

  • Just in case you missed my point: in less about aid and more trade. If you have any perspective you'd at least consider the point that its more important that Africa has access to international trade. (Don't ignore the difficult questions in favour of an easy answer: stop aid).

  • dddsadasdasda

  • This interviewer seems to not have any interest in her arguments, just (as a previous comment stated) blunt questions almost akin to a fact finding job interview. I think Moyo does very well to steer him back to the main issue, despite his best efforts.

  • Comment removed

  • I didn't like how the interviewer undermined Moyo through his sublime attacks. He asked very blunt questions shifting away from the main issue, but maybe its his job to find all aspects.

  • "He asked very blunt questions shifting away from the main issue, but maybe its his job to find all aspects. "

Okay and when has scholarships become aid. Come on Brian think!! Also why would anyone leave their countries for better opportunities. Also Bono is a joke and concerned with being the savior of Africa. In fact some African leader criticized him for not including African people in his so-called heroic journey and he gave some funky answer about African people being involved.

  • Aside from that, the interview was most interesting and her responses were on point.

  • Very intelligent woman indeed, however, opposing foreign aid is not indicative of good leadership qualities. That being said, it is a step in the right direction. Kagame has undoubtedly done some good things but the good he has done doesn't erase the bad, meaning the human rights violations that he and other criminals in his government have committed. This explains the interviewer's astonishment. Abdoulaye Wade, same scenario, they are not shining examples of progressive African leaders

  • Abdoulaye Wade, same scenario, they are not shining examples of progressive African leaders

And some could say the same about Western leaders.

  • Yes, some could.

  • this is great dambisa is the best and she is smart beautiful and intelligent u go girl

  • This is a very high profile interview on African Aid.

Dr Moyo is an intelligent woman who the world need in economical issues. I am proud of her

  • Dambisa Moyo is sexy, and intelligent, which adds to her sexiness.

  • Thanks CSPAN!!!!

  • Very good work Dambisa! If you are interested in this, you may be interested in Noreena Hertz's I.O.U.

  • Very interesting interview - thank you.

  • wow. this woman is very very very smart. she is answering ever question with such knowledge, practically teaching us about africa. You Go Girl. I love the book

  • This is very refreshing dialogue on the topic of aid to Africa. I wish this could be aired before or after American Idol.

  • the aid must not be working hell all the money people been giving to africa its really ashame
