The concept of "holy war" derives from Christianity, from the Old Testament, where God is a warrior god, a vengeful god, a god who fights for his people. And your place in heaven is assured as long as you fight for him. This is Jesus in Mathew 10:30: "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

@yudzabubl83 and the israelites did this for justified reasons. additionally, the only concept present in the bible regarding unbelievers is that we should be tolerant to them, as it says that we should always be prepared to give a gentle and kind answer to those questioning us instead of saying that we should fight them or be unyielding to them. now matthew 10:30 (though the verse # is actually 34, not 30) is not a verse that condones violence towards unbelievers.

During the reign of Charlemagne the Church needed a standard version of Latin - most in Europe already spoke some type of Latin, but those of Celtic Heritage had to study Latin, mostly by transcribing all the old Classical texts. That's how the old sciences were saved. European Universities are more comfortable giving Islam credit due to their racism towards the Irish, and we've all followed suit.
