I first completed this game at age 19 in 2009. I thought the game in terms of graphics were really bland for the time, but the aesthetic was where the visuals shined. The soundtrack was diverse and each song being for a unique situation as all game soundtracks should. The storyline was cool. I haven't played an SNES RPG about a statue that corupts the population of the world aiding an alien invasion. Flaws discussed in part 2.
@SMRPGFAN101 Earthbound's gameplay has both pros and cons. You can play it with one hand, the writing is spectacular with each NPC having something interesting to say depending on the situation, the outside of battle mechanics are cool with the preemptive strikes and even killing enemies without fighting which won't drag the game. The flaws are item storage being too little, dated battle mechanics, some commands that don't work, and the broken difficulty curve. There's a non-fanboy review.
@Tork110 The main reason I made that comment was to make people think a little before calling it "TEH BEST GAME EVAR!!!" Every game has flaws, even my all time favourite RPG, Super Mario RPG for having lack of character development. Earthbound is no exception to this rule even with the nice aesthetics and writing. @Zephaniah84 You need to get certain items and give them to each monkey blocking a door. You're required to have two items bought from a store or obtained elsewhere before you can complete the monkey caves. Paula was kidnapped at the mall. You need to complete this part to rescue her.
Is the SNES region locked? I plan to buy one with my birthday money as well as Earthbound but I live in Ireland and am unsure whether or not it will work on a PAL SNES.

nothing can ever beat this game! The storyline was epic, the charters you met and mystery. god i miss the good old days of simple graphics and only needing a computer play. Yet even now it still beats all of the new games, its just a classic.
i love earthbound but i have a problem. It seems to lose my saves and i have to start over. I had a file that was very far along and when i turned it on it was gone. Also i havent played in a day and it still lost my info. Does any one know what the cause may be? Thanks for uploading this:)

I mean I love both the Mother series and the Paper Mario series (though I like Thousand Year Door more than SPM or the first game in the series) because they both seem to use humor to keep you going (though I have to admit the original Paper Mario's humor was pretty lighthearted which is one reason I prefer TYD for it's more subtle hidden underlying adult humor) and like Earthbound the NPCs will usually have *2bcont.*

Earthbound is quite an amazing game. I would constantly see my friend's brother playing it on SNES back in the day, but never asked what it was or even attempted to try it. Many years later a friend loaned a copy to me and I played it like crazy.
It's a bit dated, but don't let that hold you back. It has a great, heart-warming (sometimes terrifying) story, bizarre characters and many genuinely funny moments. Definitely one of the best RPGs ever made.
@Hiibashiri Well...thats because you dont like turn based battling, but - if you really get in to the emotion and meaning etc. of the game, then you'll really love it.
@Styroksipaprika Your parents must suck. I bought EarthBound at $130, and even if it was at $300, it would still be worth every penny. But, I'm the same guy who jizzes his pants every time he hears the words "EarthBound", has a Hatness, a bunch of EarthBound stuff from the FanGamer Store, and bows to my EarthBound cartridge every time I see it in my SNES, so that's completely my opinion. ...I need a new hobby...

Ok how many of you are here (or first came here) because you broke down wanting to know what this Earthbound/Mother game that Ness is from because of constantly seeing the game's title in the Smash Bros. series coming here to discover what the heck Earthbound is and to find out about Ness's origins and to see what his game is or was like? (I know thats a mouthful but no shame in coming to Youtube to find some videos of it thats pretty much part of how I was introduced to it).
Easily one of my favorite intros to any game. It's a shame that there never was a scene like this, and that the game strayed into creepy territory in so few places (really only Moonside, which was still pretty comical, Mu training, and the end). I could see that intro fitting in a completely different game.

@XanderThaGreat *Continued and sorry for the long comment* I mean even the people who are introduced to the series via Smash end up loving the game just as much as any other fans who weren't introduced that way and they show they're just as dedicated as any other Mother fans. I mean it shouldn't matter how they were introduced besides this series needs all the attention it can get because it certainly doesn't get it from American and European sides of Nintendo itself.

@scottydog94 I had no idea what even Yoshi's Island was until the N64 era reading about it on the old Nintendo(dot) com years ago because I didn't know much since I was just a little kid playing a Genesis/Megadrive in the 16-bit era and I certainltly don't remember seeing any advertisements for Earthbound back when I was a little kid during that era of gaming, I still saw Nintendo's ads for other games but don't remember seeing a single one for Earthbound back then.

I had a Genesis growing up in the 16-bit era and what about the people in Europe who never even got a chance to play Earthbound or any game from the Mother series because no Mother games have ever been released in Europe, not even Earthbound/Mother 2 was even released in Europe despite it having a translation in America so Mother fans in Europe's first and only Mother game release exposure is through Smash Bros. plus I had no idea what even *2bcont.*

Ok how many of you are here (or first came here) because you broke down wanting to know what this Earthbound/Mother game that Ness is from because of constantly seeing the game's title in the Smash Bros. series coming here to discover what the heck Earthbound is and to find out about Ness's origins and to see what his game is or was like? (I know thats a mouthful but no shame in coming to Youtube to find some videos of it thats pretty much part of how I was introduced to it).

Easily one of my favorite intros to any game. It's a shame that there never was a scene like this, and that the game strayed into creepy territory in so few places (really only Moonside, which was still pretty comical, Mu training, and the end). I could see that intro fitting in a completely different game.

Can someone PLEASE tell me where i can play this? I looked on Amazon and eBay and there is NO WAY I'm spending 100 dollars on an "acceptable" cartridge. I have tried numerous times to play it on an emulator, which always fails and I have tried the online Java thing and that won't load. Someone help me please.
