  • Real life Omni Tool? The future looks bright.

  • That's nasty. It's like, oh look at the time on my hand. Let's play Angry Birds. On my hand! *ping ping*

    No. Please.

  • 100% of that office in the first scene is from Ikea. hands down

  • @marasiganjp really? i mean come on did you look at the video, its a projector, schools and businesses use projectors all over the place. Or did you mean the tapping? cause yeah tapping your arm is gonna be super hazardous to your health....

  • does this have any reaction or potential hazard for people to use? i just hope that as you develop this technology, a medical research should also be alongside it to assure the people it is safe to use. thanks!

  • @marasiganjp

dude, what? it shines a light on your arm and senses vibrations made by tapping your skin with your finger. what part of that sounds unsafe?

  • @gobbygoo

just by watching tv or using your computer can have a great effect on your eyes DUDE, my only point in asking if it is safe is not because a new technology is introduced, we should just jump into it without knowing or asking the long term effects of using it...........get it DUDE? Peace out!

  • how does the image projects on your skin?? is there a mini projector??

  • Wait.....The Microsoft OmniTouch?

  • wat exactly is this arm band doing??? i mean wat is its function??

  • @taurian91

The arm band contains 10 piezoelectric sensors tuned to different frequencies. They detect the unique acoustic signal generated when the user touches his or her skin. The input is then passed into a support vector machine classifier for real-time classification. Of course the SVM has to be trained first for each user.

  • Great concept. I hope this takes off, but your probably gonna have to pretty it up a bit first.

  • Hi, this is a truly inspiring project... Contratulations.

  • As of now, how fast can you operate this thing. In other words, if I wanted to dial a number, like you did at 2:32, do I have to go as slow as you did, or can I do it much faster than that?

  • looks really innacurate

  • Can I use my penis since it's fairly large?

  • @hukiworld lol

  • @bigbrowncheifbottom hahahaha i do have lots of surface area lol i told my female friends at work about my new skinput on my penis and they all wanted a demonstration. you guys should hire me rolfmaoooo

  • hì_ì_fEêl_sO_lónÊly_tÒdãY

  • i hope they make that in a smaller band, and that they sell it for a conform price, i would buy one for sure!

  • it looks cool but i like the iphone better. haha

  • Fuckin' A!

  • well how much are they planning to sell it

  • very impressive! Hope you guys continue to get grants and support

  • Fingering has a new definition

  • Sick!

Some Guy demoed a Peregrine gaming glove to me today,

but i'm sure this trumps that pretty hard.

  • Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave! With a box of scraps!

  • 2:02 THAT is fucking awasome. Imagine when in class, professor says, "during lecture please turn off your cell phone, laptop and please refrain from skin tapping."

  • OMG. WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT. ORGASM. WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT. Play Halo:Reach on my hand. >:D

  • Brings a whole new meaning to the term "push my buttons". Seriously though, this looks like very profound technology. Can't wait to see where they take it.

  • Звуки тела - как интерфейс для управления

  • Now the only thing left is to make this technique respond to body movements.

To switch song on your mp3-player thrust forward with your crotch. Would make for some fun public moments.

  • Belive it or not Free energy is real,But the Establishment doesn't want ppl to know this,Find a motor that needs no fuel or input at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Free yourself!

  • I'd prefer an interface of floating, "hard light" icons being displayed mid-air from the palm of my hand rather than poking my arm.

  • Fuck the iPhone. I want my Omni-tool

  • "Doesn't require any electronics to be placed on the skin" Well, what the fuck is that huge thing with all the wires attached to it then? It is cool technology but it is not what this guy claims it to be.

  • @CainmosniMirrored just give it time man its only just been invented, in a few years after they'll make it wireless....and then they can invent something to get rid of all wires on my pc..

  • @CainmosniMirrored this is their first step, before you know it, it could be as small as a Live Strong bracelet, and could be 99% accurate.

  • @AckAttack77 This technology is dead in the water. Nothing will come of it.

  • @CainmosniMirrored dead in the water? how about putting it to use for doctors? they could pull up several patient charts without constantly changing clip boards.

  • @Uruz5565 Do you realize that you have to poke your arm? Who wants to poke at their arm all day. Sit there right now hold your arm out and poke it for 5 minutes. That is why it is dead in the water. It is not practical.

  • @CainmosniMirrored Don't be so naive. Almost every life-changing technology was initially hailed as impractical and useless. This is the kind of thing I would invest in.

  • @revelationjr542 I'm not naive, I'm practical. The thing looks uncomfortable. Like I already said, who wants to poke their arm constantly? What about that arm band, do you want to wear something like that all the time?(I know this is a prototype)

I am not sold and the fact that this is Microsoft does not help it's chances.

  • @CainmosniMirrored Well Project Natal yeilded the XBox Kinect. They'll find some use for it somewhere is someone makes a "practical application" out of it. It can be for games or military or maybe even something no one has thought of yet. Maybe you can crimp your fingers when playing a kinect game to add finer control...like triggers. Who knows.

  • @CainmosniMirrored And btw, it's a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University. No doubt MS prolly had a large "financial" role in this project but Microsoft employs PEOPLE, that come from various places besides Microsoft. And in case you don't know what CMU is, they made the driverless cars that recently can cross deserts and cities. Among other grand things are like lunar rovers and much of conputer tech that you use and just don't know were the credit should be given to.

  • @CainmosniMirrored I don't mind the idea. I'd buy it

  • I can't wait for my omni-tool

  • kyle sent me

  • Amazing!

  • Umm I'll pass.

    No.

  • very bad case ilness

  • @TheA7b8 Very good because of advancement in technology.

  • Girls with sharp fingernails would cut their veins using this...

  • Can anybody say Mark of the Beast...

Check out the New York Times website and type in the search box:

Cellphone Payments Offer Alternative to Cash

    Revelation 13

16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:

17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

  • @ZeroHour2012 Here we go...don't get me wrong I'm a Christian but this is in no way shape or form "Mark of the Beast", this is just cool technology like the Omni tool from mass effect like many have said. Also the MOTB will be solely on the right hand or forehead, this is on either palm (depending on your handiness) and down to your forearm. *Insert trololol here*

  • Skinput + 6th Sense + 3G + Exoskeleton = WTF!!

  • the future is here - that would be a cool slogan

  • This is beyond awesome. With a little more research, this could be commercial, and make my dreams of living out Mass Effect in reality - A reality!

  • hmmm, i want it now

  • Ok.. I must admit I'm a freak, cause my mind went str8 to the gutter after I thought about what I could use SkinPut for.

  • What if you have prosthetic arms?

  • Too cool.

But I prefer my keyboard. :-)

  • SKINPUT Its a great invention, but i think My Arm will fall down

  • that must hurt if you do that for some time.

  • Imagine This Evolved!

  • when can I buy one?

  • What happens when you grab your crotch? Launches the porn browser?

  • @JesusManson323 No: Calls the pope and police. 0.o

  • @JesusManson323 LMAO!!!!

  • for those who think this amazing technology is useless, are you nuts?!! there are hundreds of applications that can use this technology in medicine, military, you can even use your hand as a TV remote control...how about that? the possibilities are endless..way to go Chris!

  • @addoola1 Oh yeah, having a projector wrapped around your arm like a cyborg is so (!) comfortable. :p Especially when we're wearing long shirts or jackets etc.pp. In the 60s Ivan Sutherland et al. built and tested cybergloves and cyberglasses; are we now running around wearing that shit, finally? No? Oh! The impossibilities are endless. No-go, Chris!

  • Want.

  • Want.

  • the ipod is just a proof of concept set up, could be used (once refined) for hundreds of applications. hope some of the major companies throw you a sweet contract

  • u are an IDIOT

  • @frrtop wow calm down it's just the way I see it, dont need to get your panties in a twist.

  • @frozenfenix0 yea it maybe looks useless right now but its a concept idea and they will probably work something out...

  • Now it's only a matter of time 'til we discover those Prothean ruins on Mars and activate our Relay by Pluto.

  • @BakagetaKoto Bet this time we got a andvantage: all the rpg geeks know about the reapers;)

  • @N0T2SmarT and i am the mean femshep :)

  • @BakagetaKoto I have no idea what that means, but I am going to assume it's a good thing.

  • This is the coolest thing I have seen in a long time!

  • That's awesome.

  • HOLY SHIT

    MASS EFFECT OMNI TOOL!

  • Exactly what I was thinking :D

  • that's pretty nuts

  • awsome! I can 't wait to use it...!

  • amazing. can t wait to use it!

  • Awesome !

  • uber kuhl junge!

  • this is awesome!!!!!

really i can believe it yet!!!!!

imagine how many things u can do just with a touch (actually u can do lol)

    this is the new age!!!!

  • I want it!

  • keep one

  • keep one

  • wow all the fiction movies going to be real...its realy amaziiiiiing

  • This is very awesome and i can't wait to see what it can do once applied to other devices.

  • holy shit

  • This is cool! :) good ideas here acoustic sensors, nice. Seems quite picky though, the taps seem so perfected and deliberate, is there a learning curve? such as hitting with a certain impact or speed or is it intuitive? cool stuff.

  • awesome!

  • Yeah it would seem to be awkward to use in a cold place, or when its raining.

If you have the screen as a film laid out of the flesh, why not just pick up the taps with this film too ?

If you have a projector, why not use a video camera to watch the hand movements.

If you have to hold your arm out to see the "screen", why can't you just have a proper reflective screen to project onto, eg embedded in a mans tie.

  • @isilder That 'sixth sense' stuff is bogus. Using a webcam is a real pain in the ass, I know first hand. It's so temperamental and picky even with $300 low light cameras, they are slow and lossy. Why should I dedicate all my movements and situations to accommodate this webcam.

Tapping you don't need light or any visual interface, you can use it while driving.

Imagine being somewhere and relying on a webcam/pico scenario "damn its not picking up let me run over here where its darker or lighter"

  • The projection onto your skin or sleeve would be much harder to see in bright light than even an LCD screen. Notice how in the video all the shots of the device's projection were in very dim light. Even if they can get a skinput armband to work with a coat, you would still have to take the armband off and strap it back on whenever you wanted to don an outer garment. I don't predict this technology will be the wave of the future, but will rather go the way of flying cars and VR goggles.

  • @dreamcass LOL hey I use VR goggles :) check out my vid 'Morrowind - Virtual Reality' to see an example.

  • OMG THAT'S AWESOME!

  • holy shit, this is rly nice

  • My gf is a finger input device....

This is pretty cool. It will be a welcome device when it is made smaller.

I wonder if it could be made small enough to be install subdermally?

  • @shayanthis LOL gf, nice *shocker*...

  • Yep, we need to grow more fingers

  • Very cool indeed!

  • Multi-touch?

    Hit two fingertips simultaneously!!

    When will that be possible...

  • too much hitting; you could just use interrupted lasers to see what/where the tap took place and get better/faster results

  • I'm worried about my health if using lasers

  • One stop closer to a real life Omni tool from mass effect.

  • @brenndon1 all we need now is a micro-factory that can basically make anything .

  • @brenndon1 You read my mind before I even had the thought

  • It looks like it's a projector rathar than his arm!

  • I still want a pip boy. And have been wanting an arm computer ever since I saw predator. Imagine being able to destroy everything around you, if Arnold decided to make you bleed so he can kill it.

  • esta é a tecnologia mais incrivel que ja vi na vida!!!

  • looks nice techonology

  • Oh man, this is verrrry similar to an idea I had. Someone will definitely beat me to it.

  • It's fun to try.

I wonder how it affects health.

  • @mikafuruichi: why would it affect health in any way?

  • If they touch on skin a lot, I thought it damage on tissues.

  • @mikafuruichi Perhaps in the same way that being alive puts you at an increased risk of death.

Any effect would be negligible and within every day boundaries of body use. I can't imagine peoples limbs will fall off from having tapped their forearm too much.

  • It could irritate the skin by over-use. Just like little raindrops could damage you if you let it drip for hours on the same spot. The same applies to holding the mouse for to long. It could lead to injuries.

  • Are you referencing water torture...? Because that's as much to do with the placement of the nerves and things on the back of the neck as the dripping itself.

Repetitive strain injury comes under every day life use in my books and I would have said the affects would be less acute with this system. Also it would likely be no more damaging than any current devices.

Also in it's current state this seems to be more viable for casual devices, rather than office hours style usage for data input.

  • You are right.

  • Microsoft does a lot of interesting researches but their products are almost the same of 15 years ago.

  • What do you do if you have jacket and gloves on?

    Control over the face?

Hopefully the power button is not in your eye.

  • Well I would assume that there would be different command set profiles available, depending on the gloves you can still flick or click your fingers.

Depends entirely on your chosen use... whether it's a casual device like an MP3 player or some sort of mechanical device interface, if you were operating a remote controlled package loader or something. The possibilities are endless.

  • I don't think I would find it very comfortable to use my arm as a touchpad, I prefer buttons... But as a technological progress, it's impressive!

  • scary i find too much technology too fast lol damn sonn mell be forced to take a microchip ( RFID)

  • I think it is very convenient.

  • Yeah, it's using something that's very hard to lose.

  • This is friggin' awesome.

  • intresting enough if this device can become even stronger sense a petting touch, a touch without lifting your finger or a tap. this makes your skin the touchscreen. think of having 2/3/4/5 finger jestures on your hand. AWESOME

  • it's not gonna be popular enough until they make a "slide your finger on your arm to scroll" function. Amazing stuff though!

  • this is like sixth sense technology!

  • Nice :)

  • for now this si bullshit , later this thig would be smaller then it will be worht to buy trust me its always like that :)

  • tru they already made a smaller version they just aren't sharing it with us yet. iphone was developed ten years ago but the technology was devolved in order to make more money. hooray "1st generation" relics.

  • nice, ms is working

  • Welcome To The Future...

  • pranav used a camera to track the position of a persons fingers.

Not accustic vibrations through the skin, as has been done here.

  • copy cat ....this is pranav mistry's original idea..... thief

  • How so...?

Which of Pranav's projects is this stolen from? It seems sufficiently different from the ones he's currently involved in.

  • He should have showed us how to use Overload and Incinerate.

  • two words > OMNI TOOL !!! :D

  • Wow I guess somebody DID spend more time playing through the Mass Effect games than I did. Say hello to the real life Omni-Tool!

  • Does it work with a hoodie or shirt? It's cold here so only t-shirt is used only in middle summer.

  • incredible stuff m8..keep us updated...would love to see a RL product in the market one day..

    PATENT THAT SHIT gogogog...

  • imagine if it can be used under the belt. for a joystick.

  • could work this would be cool

  • CRAzy enough to work, you could use it for interactive gaming, it could be like the wii only more precise, combined with 3d glasses it could work out nicely.

  • LOL! what if it is has a virus?? the virus is going 2 my body.. shiitttt! im going 2 die.. LOL!

  • ~Betcha cant click here~

  • Seems neat. I'm interested to see how far this will develop within the next ten years.

  • if they make it smaller ill buy it if they dont ill still buy it its the future if they can make sumthing like this what could they make in the next 5 years or sumthing

  • If this is successful, it will be the new wave of cellphones and mp3 players.

It might even ruin Ipods because it be an integrated cellphone mp3 player.

  • hmmm.... stupid, not only that thing but i think a person would look stupid if you were at a public place and started tapping your arm and hand to play a song

  • you're stupid,this is the future technology

if you dont like it GTFO

  • Hey, news flash, people already look stupid in public staring down at a little doohicky with tiny buttons and a tiny screen. At least with this they won't look like assholes.

  • @centurionl

how is that stupid? it is innovative.... When people were still using walkmen, I'm sure the idea of an iPod sounds like it would look weird to them...

  • @b1bIs1337 no, it's a device too... it's only a different brand., i wouldnt want to have that thing, if im going to have something wrapped in my arm, i might as well strap and ipod to my hand

  • @centurionl

I;ve seen people do that too :p. So at this point the only benefit is looking cool?

I mean, I'm still comfortable with an ipod/whatever, but this stuff looks really cool.

  • no not really, and if it got really popular it'd be considered normal, did you think of it that way?

  • Not if everyone else is using it...

  • Mass Effect omni-tool, next.

  • lol
