  • I was working at the radio station, WLYN, just around the corner. Unbelievable sight. Looked like the entire sky was lit up.

  • my mom worked at mcdonalds at the time when she was in hight school and they brought food down to the fire fighters

  • I remember my late parents lived at 16 Amity St. and my father was upset because there was no water and I think the electricity was also shut off. I remember saying that they were lucky the wind was blowing in the opposite direction. I lived on Johnson St. and the water was rusty from fire. Remember seeing fire on TV. My oldest daughter was 5 months old then.

  • i was 6 years old and watched it from my parlor window's on sagormore st until the mp had us leave until it was ok to go home

  • No stopping that monster... hopefully nobody was killed over a future parking lot... Prime example of just pulling your people back and letting it burn because it sure as hell ain't worth it..

  • I was only 10 years old at the time....just a kid myself... but i remember feeling bad..

  • I remember this fire, specifically because I was on Amity St waiting for my dad to pick me up for a weekend visit in boston. I saw a bunch of kids running and laughing screaming to run...i remember thinking uh oh..they must of did something bad..as we began driving down the lynnway about 30min later...I remember looking out the back window to see all the dark smoke in the air..right about where the NSCC is now...as I sat down I remember thinging...oh my gosh...those kids started that fire..

  • This fire was just across a highway and a parking lot from the harbor. I think they ended up drafting from the harbor to help with the water supply. I could be wrong though.

  • The tiller at 4:52 (then Swampscott FD's brand new 1982 Maxim 100' TDA) is now privately owned in Andy Leider's collection. The Nahant FD responded to that fire with a 1979 Maxim 100' RMA that is still in service as Ladder 31! Set to be retired next year. Get a look at her while you still can.

  • The tillered aerial at 4:52 was Swampscott FD's ladder. They just retired it a few years ago!

  • aaaaand the fire is pink

  • I was glad to see them keeping the ALF 900 cool, with all that radiant heat. I only hope they did the same with the Mack C series I saw.

With the possible exception of some oil refinery fires I attended, those were the largest flames I think I've ever seen.

Another great video, fourduce. Love the old gear.

  • ENTERINGLYNN DOT COM

  • @xXNomorewords7Xx Yes, they built a community college on the site. It's been there for 25 years.

  • I was there watching fire fighters battle this monster. For hours on end the trucks came rolling in from all over creation. Hundreds of people had gathered despite pleas from cops and fire fighters to 'stay back' We had no water from our tap for a day or so. It was unreal, just unbelievable that the whole block was ablaze ! Im so glad someone was taping, this was a monumental event. Great footage of the great Lynn fire.

  • Outstanding video. Its great how you catch everything & not just the fire itself. The tiller backing away with the stick up & as they cool off the engine. You catch alot of different angles in your videos. A+ stuff

  • I have been seeking this footage for over a year now!

It's good to know that so many people have uploaded various bits of history, on youtube...

    Thank you so very much!

  • The Great Lynn Fire of 1981 - After 10 alarms the fire was determined to be a conflagration. Luckily the high winds were blowing North - if they had been in a more westerly direction, most of downtown Lynn would have been lost. Fire dept.s from as far as NH responded. Fire crews were on scene for 2 weeks before the all out was called.

  • Wow, that is a huge fire. The radiant heat must have been pretty severe. How many firefighters and apparatus on 10 alarms.
