At first I rolled my eyes at the notion of some gringo telling me about my own country but the video was very well done! I loved seeing my old stomping grounds, hearing music that only intensified my nostalgia, and most of all I enjoyed seeing how happy you were in Cartagena.
You should go to San Andres y Providencia if you haven't already, my birthplace :)
Good overview of the walled city, but didn't cover the modern beach areas boca grande and el laguito. Those are the safe areas for tourists to stay, but expensive unless you stay in an apartment.

Principalmente Cartagena, donde por un plato cobran mas que Paris o Roma, en lugares con menos infraestructura, platos menos elaborados y con una mano de obra a la q pagan maximo unos €200/mes. The remarkable thing about Cartagena is the fabulous weather... the breeze means there are no mosquitoes... sure its hot, but do like the locals... dive into the surf with your business suit on then lay in the sun for a siesta! Food is fabulous too. Hey I was there in 1973... when it was a bit more dangerous. Still have great memories of our residencia across the street from the beach.
I went to Cartagena when I was 12 years old. Sadly I wish my parents wouldn't have taken me at such a young age. I probably would've been able to appreciate it much more now that I'm older. I plan on returning once I graduate from college.
@TheExpeditioner its not really a "cold" or a"hot" country! you see, the weather differs depending on what region you are in! Cartagena its really hot but the capital, Bogota, its cold! ^^
@TheExpeditioner Not spent much time in Bogota or in the mountains in the zona Cafetera then? ;) Get's chilly and wet, but yeah, never cold...unless you ask my wife, she's always cold. :D
@mixmangelus yeah dude, bogota is a little bit cold , but cartagena had the most high temperature in world during 5 minutes in a day , like 132.8 Fº , i can assure you because i"m from cartagena , cool winds but it"s really hot.....
@mixmangelus Well it depends on what part of Colombia you're in, I spent 2 months in Bogota and it gets pretty cold in the morning and in the evening.
@mixmangelus I'm from Bogotá-Colombia originally but some of my friends were curious to see what beautiful things we have so i found this vid to show, then when I was telling them that Cartagena is sizzleling hot they wouln´t believe me beacuse they guy in the vid is wearing jeans and a obscure t-shirt (not wearable in a 40 C climate)
@mixmangelus It depends, Bogota is VERY cold...and other cities and villages in the andes zone are cold too, but regions like Valle del Cauca or the caribbean region are quite hot!
the only thing that i didn't like about cartagena was that it was full of gringo tourists, and the second any body heard me speaking English i would be swamped by hawkers. The rest of Colombia i was treated with interest as a foreigner, in Cartagena i was just another fucking tourist
@Daringa But I am glad you like Colombia overall. It is a wonderful people, and the people is the best!!!! Thank you for visiting and PLEASE come back.
Very cool clip and fab views of C/gena my beloved city. I would like to point out that you say that C/gena was settled by Spanish "coloniziers" you make it sound like the Spanish were the pilgrims, esos putos were CUT-THROATS, only interested in 1 thing GOLD and to that end they brought slaves from Africa. Spanish didn't build SHIT, they had local native now extinct and slave populations do all the heavy lifting w/sweat, blood and tears mixed in with the mortar. #ucKin-A. Just venting:)
Excellent video, very well put together, great footage and well narrated. Yes you do get great views of Cartagena from Castillo de San Felipe, but did you visit the monastery of La Popa? The views from La Popa are spectacular. I also made a brief video of Cartagena which I hope you will take a look at, I posted it as a video response, cheers.
well narrated, he mentions Spanish "Colonizers" like if they were the #uckin pilgrims, C/gena was NO Jamestown Virginia, los españoles were unos hijos de la gran puta.
@ramsesneilsoto Yes you make a good point. Cartagena is a beautiful city but we should not forget the suffering of the indigenous people and the slaves who built it's amazing walls and fortresses. Many of them lived and died under terrible conditions and sadly this was the case throughout all of Latin America. Thank you for reminding us of this.
i was born in colombia, and i gotta say cartagena is the most wonderous city. You have the hot sun, the water, and not much tourists, so its ricccoooooo!
I was born in the US but my entire family is from Cali. I'm actually in the process of buying tickets to fly out to Cartagena with my mother as a mothers day gift. Is there any place that we should visit that was not shown on this program? If so would you mind recommending a couple? Thanks for your time.
Hey I don't mean to stereotype your country but I was wanting to know how do they view tourist down there because of the american media, everytime you hear anything about colombia they only show the drug cartels. I have to come to youtube to see something positve.
you get everything, most people are very friendly an eager to help you and cause a good impression on you. but you can always get the ocasional conservative guy who is not fond of gringos, but that rarely happens.
Thank you for asking William. Colombians love tourists, in fact when you leave the country you will have fallen-in-love with its people and their traditions. Like in any other country - of course - you will have to be careful of vandalism, but again, you see that in any country.
I recommend that you search for videos with the title Colombia is Passion (in English) and you will be surprised at how many great, amazing, positive things you will learn about this magnificent country. Hope I helped.
@William82oct thats wats sad about America.. americans are sooo full of themselves and look upon the rest of the world like they are crap. In many things Colombia is much better than the U.S. (just like the US is better in some things), but i must say that Colombia is very different from wat americans picture the world it is. If by any chance you go to Colombia, you'll see how amazing it really is.
It is your job (as a Colombian I assume) to make people realize that... little by little, you ought to tell everyone about the greatness of Colombia. I have made it my mission, if people won't go to Colombia, I will take Colombia to the people.
Latino America deve bloquar todo producto de la Narco Provincia Narcogranadina y su Narco Presidente. Solo las Colombianas pueden ser exportadas es lo unico bueno de la Narco Provincia Neococaina
People dont forget. It's inside of them... it lives... in their music, their food, their language, their architecture- their modismos...everything that makes them who they are los de Cartegena have triumphed and redefined who they are through music, culture, dance, food and through their own silent political suffering... They never forget their past and what is most deeply inside of them Viva Colombia!!
I just returned from a 1 week long vacation at this beautiful tropical paradise. I felt in love inmediately after entering the walls of the old city. After having traveled to many colonial cities throughout the Americas, this city tops them all. Figure St Augustine 10 times larger in area and in rich tradition and culture. I plan to return without the kids, just the wife and I on what is one of the most romantic cities I've ever been to. Loved it !!
Cartagena is very nice! I got to see the fortress that was used in the movie romancin the stone from 1980's,and stayed on playa blanca. Wow was the water clear! San Andres is paradise for sure!
