the shrimp tempura sushi that I buy from sushi restaurants are topped with a sweet brownish sauce instead of fish eggs. anybody know the name of the sauce?
@Feonalilly it doesn't taste like eel because there's a lot more in it besides eel. Sugar, Soy Sauce, Mirin and Sake are the other ingredients. Depending on where you live (urban area or whatever) there might be an Asian market you could try finding it. I really want to try this with eel sauce, because that's my favorite topping they use at the restaurant I like. I'm hoping since I live in larger metroplex, I'll get lucky and find it in the Asian isle at my supermarket.
when I went to a sushi restaurant, they didn't speak good English so I'm assuming it was authentic & they were all somehow related, and they put this sweet sauce on it. I only see the orange eggs on the sushi you buy from stores like walmart or Albertsons.
@brittlelittleheart - I'm there with you, but wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry? Research and use small amounts of the low mercury fish. Like tuna is usually the only fish that docs let you eat, just make sure to cook it. I know it's not what you want, but would you rather something happen to your unborn child or eat what you want? I only tried sushi a year ago and I've been craving it ever since, but I rather wait it out a bit longer. Then I can pig out! Good luck

@Feonalilly Eel sauce. It's excellent with anything tempura and adds a sweet taste to the roll. I also use it on my Eel sushi rolls. Good stuff!

Do you know what that orange sauce is that they put on top of the Tempura Rolls when you buy them made at the store?
JulietaNations 1 year ago 2
@JulietaNations It should be Masago or the small orange fish eggs.

Do you heat the shrimp or put it in cold?
JulietaNations 1 year ago
@JulietaNations I heat up the shrimp, just be careful not to use the shrimp when it's too hot, especially with cream cheese.

I love shrimp tempura temaki & salmon sushi. The Temaki I eat has red roe & some sort of white creamy sweet sauce.
