The comedy vehicle line has reappeared throughout his career - usually with reference to the latest film or show to feature some mediocre actor such as steve gutenberg, the most mediocre of all actors, as celebrated in the 1995 (ish) Fist of Fun annual created by Stewart Lee and Richard Herring. So for it to appear as the name of his own television show over a decade later is, I think you'll find, actually a reference to a very long-running gag. And a funny one at that.

I hate to brag, mostly because there are others much more intelligent than me out there, such as Stewart Lee. Wow, I've seen his more recent work on DVD, but the young Stewart Lee is very different. The style and mannerisms are there, but somehow there seems to be more energy and enthusiasm. I don't know whether the lack of mainstream success and an income that has probably not reflected his talent have taken their toll. His new work is more polished and hard-hitting though than what I saw in this clip. But it was very intriguing to see.
