  • The audio has been corrupted for over a year now and Paladonia no longer seems to be maintaining his or her video uploads . . . because I love this video so much, I downloaded and re-uploaded it so it works now. If Paladonia would like me to take the video down, I'll do so immediately. Meanwhile, you can still enjoy it by searching for "The Book of Love - YouTube video by "Paladonia""

  • A shame the hammer came down, this was a work of art in its own right.

  • please repost this with fixed audio, it's such a good video.

  • Aw, nerfed!

  • WHAT HAPPENED TO THE AUDIO?!

  • we're all to young...

  • this is good but i like gabriel's version a lot better

  • I think that the ending with the fireworks, and the audio after that is a beautiful visual.

    Just saying.

  • How did such a rinky dink musician with such a goofy baritone voice write such a beautiful piece of music?

  • neither of those 'qualifications' should effect his songwriting. they didn't hurt cash, either.

  • curious, ever listened to Bob Dyan or Willie Nelson?

  • He put work into finding out how best to express what he was feeling.

  • nice song..

  • How can you say there is humour in this? its a love song. Peter Gabriel just improves it with a more modern approach , and love it or hate it, its a generally better made track than this

  • Just listen to the depth of the voices...Modern does not always mean improved

  • i can see where some people would find humor in it. The lines like the book of love is long and boring or talking about the music being really dumb. I dunno I guess its just the turn around the singer has from the verse to the chorus. But I wouldn't say it's necessarily humorous but I can see where whoever said that is coming from.

  • I don't know if it's really humor, or simply the realization of some of life and love's absurdities, but one of those things is present.

  • because their can't be humour in love?

  • fokus på possitivitet

  • this video, imo, is somehow perfect, even with the audio form teh vids at times. Odd, but perfect. Thanks for making it and posting it.

  • covering this is like covering "Love will tear us apart" by Joy Division. you sacrifice part of its essence when making a cover... unless you turn it into something else.

I heard the "natalydawn" cover here on youtube and it's pretty much the only cover of this song that I like.

  • peter gabriel

  • oh, I really *don't* like the Peter Gabriel version.

    but that's just personal.

  • Gabriel's version takes away from the humor that is so quintessential of Merrit's lyrics.

Every track off of 69 love songs is, obviously, a love song. But Gabriel turns it into this epic ballad - not a bad thing, but I prefer the quaint simplicity of the original.

  • @mep338 Wrong. This song is by The Magnetic Fields. Paul Gabriel did a cover, that just happened to become more well known than the original. Do your research before jumping to conclusions. ;)

  • well done^^

  • Love it. Great in original... .

  • Cool accompanying video.

The Gabriel version sounds like its from a disney film!

One for the James Blunt fans perhaps?

  • Peter Gabriel's version's more beautiful

  • It escapes me, how you could possibly say that.

  • I can't believe people prefer the Gabriel cover... Horses for courses I suppose!

  • the best version of this song I have ever heard is sung bu REBECCA HARKIN. check out her myspace! she's amazing!

  • haunting...mmmm. ^-^

  • Peter Gabriels version is SO much better. This is still good though.

  • oh and I really love peter gabriels version,

  • HAHAHAHA wow we have a 12 year old in the room

  • grow up son

  • I first heard peter gabriels version, I'm only 19 so I had not heard much of him at all, Just heard this song in some movie, But then I found this version and it really speaks to me, I'm dark and twisty and half crazy so this really is like how I would make a song if I could write, not that I can.... god maybe I should just shut up now... hahaha anyways I love this version

  • great post. i think you should try to write your own stuff, might be good for you and you might like it

  • magnetic fields may have wrote it, but Gabriel makes this song imo

  • there's a difference in the deliveries. this version's more frustrated and ironical, and Gabriel's version plays it as a straight love song.

  • these sure are hateful comments considering that this is a song about love and that everyone here has admitted that they enjoy the song in some capacity.

  • Magnetic Fields made this song so the people who like Peter Gabriel can fuck off!!

  • I think the writer of the song can do a worse version than a copy, But this song is beautiful and MUCH better than the Gabriel version. Merchant is amazing.

  • no offense but this is terrible. so monotoneic

  • I like Peter Gabriel's version better. More emotion in the singing and music.

  • iamlionproductions...

how can you say that a writer can't sing there own song well enough?

trent reznor sings his own song just fine and cash does a great job covering it.

this song is a great song, both versions are good to listen to.

you shouldn't be aloud to listen to music.

  • the people who prefer this version to peter gabriel's version are probably the same people who think nine inch nails do a better version of hurt than johnny cash!! clean your ears!!

  • Right on!

Occasionally cover versions are better than the original.

  • I totally Agree with you.

  • Lol iamlionproductions Nine Inch Nails' version of Hurt IS better than Johnny Cash's... it's the original! All of the pain and anger and loss and sadness in the song came from Nine Inch Nails. *rolls eyes*

  • just cause its the original doesnt make it better!! the NIN version just doest give me the shivers down my spine like the cash version does. and cash is a better singer than trent. but thats just my opinion!!

  • Okay. No hard feelings? :)

My opinion is the opposite... I want to cry whenever I hear Reznor's version, and the Cash version does nothing for me.

But anyway, this comment is nothing about The Book of Love so I'd better stop talking now. o_0

  • Fantastic. Magnetic Fields blow the socks off Gabriel's version.

  • I prefer peter gabriel

  • funny how gabriel owned this song this guy sounds like a dying sheep in the throes of foot and mouth disease..

  • hahahahaaaha, funny

  • oh god after hearing Peter's this just sounds crap and like a frunk man singing! =/

  • anyone know where i can download peter gabriels version?

  • Limewire?

  • well. itunes. or of off google. if you know how to do that. message me if you need directions.

  • this is really sweet.

  • this isnt bad, but gabriel's cover was a million times better

  • wow, I hugely disagree. Stephin Merritt's voice is a little weird when you first hear it, but really I find it very beautiful and tender.

  • I prefer this version to peter gabriel's. the voice fits better.

  • I don't know about.

  • what a shit! T_T

Peter Gabriel's version is a lot better...

  • agreed

  • You got that right. I thought this version would blow me away.

  • As did I, its decent like, but Gabriel's version is awesome

    No Bo Burnham

  • lol

  • lol

  • heh. your name belies your comment.

  • Pwnd.

    No Bo

  • Love this. Nice Job.

  • this song makes me sad

i feel like crying sometimes when i hear it

  • me too

  • Lovely song, lovely movie.

  • is this the originsl singer? cuz this definley isnt Perter Gabriel. still great job! 5 starz! :)

  • The original is by the Magnetic Fields, written and sung by their leader Stephin Merritt, as the film alludes to at the end.

  • T_T the song... T_T T_T T_T

  • this video is great, well done.

  • I miss this stinking band so bad!!!

  • nice movie

  • Thank You

  • I just found this version after bantering with another poster over whether Peter Gabriel did the song justice. I find no difference accept that PG is moe famous. But BOTH renditions are good.

  • Surreal voice.

  • Beautiful ....

Book of love by Magnetic fields is the original BEST version ...

    :)

  • I've been looking for something a little more sublime that features this song. Very well done.
