It stops it intruding in st Pauls' sightlines. It was either this, or basically a copy of the International-style St Helens next door. Architecturally we got the far superior option.
@TheFez2007 - st pauls is in an unfortunate position - right next to the city which restricts development. There are plenty of other buildings in it's sightlines - but they can't knock them all down...
I'll be honest, the Walkie Talkie is the ugliest building ever and i hope they don't build it. Also, The Shard is put in a little bit of a wierd place so it stands out a little too much.
However, the Pinnacle and this are great buildings. This is nice because it's not attracting attention to itself like the Walkie Talkie and not trying too hard, however it's not a boring box ither...
And the Bishopsgate tower is a genuine Icon and the design is well thought out.
i agree with you so much on all those points, i couldnt put it better myself. the walkie talkie building looks disgusting, the shard is cool, and a nice design but i reckon it should be in the city cluster, either that or it should have its own cluster lol! and yeah the pinnacle is lovely!
i dont agree, yes the walkie talkie, is a bit on the ugly side, however, it isnt as tall as all the pre-done pictures say as it was reduced in height. i will give it a chance - once its complete - and see how it looks. and the shard is the perfect is in the perfect place - if you put it in the city - you would only see the top half of the building from many views. but in southwark, its a sky-reaching building. and its so close to the city - and so close to the big river, so no worries with it.
yeah i suppose i was a bit harsh on it, but i just feel something much nicer could go in that plot. we should appreciate the building, not tolerate it :-/
This is a simple elegant design, this is the type of architecture we need, not over imposing aggressive like the shard or ugly like the bishopsgate tower. I hope London can retain its character despite crap designs like that
oh really??! i thought they were cancelling this along with the walky talky building and perhaps the Pinnacle! it would be fantastic if this was built along with the Shard!! Do you know for sure?!
The daft thing about this tower is the way it loses office space as it narrows towards the top. A bit pointless really...

@kinnane4 Agreed, although I like how the Shard stands on it's own.
Kinda like the Pinnicle is going to be the heart of the main scraper cluster and the Shard is going to be the crown.

I can't wait for it to be built!
bobdot2000 3 years ago
it won't be now
chrisdavidi 3 years ago
Yes it will, it's just being delayed, but it's still not been cancelled. They're just putting it back a bit, like they did for the Shard.

I'm pretty much 100% sure. They say that the building 'is not cancelled, it will just be completed in 2012, not 2011' or something along those lines.
bobdot2000 3 years ago
oh fantastic! i hope they manage it by London 2012 but they better get a move on!!
