  • What a great production this was!! I love the young Maria Ewing's Cherubino--overplayed, but you can't take your eyes off her! Earlier in the opera, she delivers a wonderful performance of "Voi che sapete."

  • @MILKYPISTOL Oh Lestat. You are so vulagr in you ways, but no one can resist Mozart!

  • theres still life in the old lady yet!

  • theres still life in the old lady yet!

  • il mio figaro, secondo la mia modestissima opinione!!!

  • it looks like he thinks the camera is a little baby... lol... but anyways, the one and only version in my opinion..

  • SIMPLY THE BEST ONE !!!

  • outstanding - the whole production is a masterpiece!

    thx4sharing!

  • non vi fa morire dal ridere? xD

  • The helicopter chase scene from 'Hopscotch' (1980)

  • Bryn Terfel does this better imo but this is still very good

  • Geniale, signor Da Ponte!

  • where can you get this movie?

  • @akherousia netflix, if you live in US

  • @akherousia Amazon.com has it in stock. It's the 1976 version directed by Jean Pierre Ponnelle.

  • Absolutely the most superb technique in his voice.

  • the best version of Le nozze di Figaro!!!!

  • One of the bests performances of Mozart's Figaro, in my opinion.

  • Oh, I love this version. Hermann Prey is delightfully new to me. Love his warm and humorous delivery, so perfect for this aria! As for Cherubino's pants role. When I was new to opera, I had a hard time seeing beyond the physical woman in the role. I simply decided (quietly, to myself): "Well, the darling is a cute little lesbian." And then I could relax and just "go with it.! I know. I'm an admitted Philistine. But I do so adore the opera...nearly ALL of it! Thank you for this wonderful version.

  • kind of ridiculous all this....the expressions of the bass....the (hopefully) woman dressed like a man...

  • @killerbunny123123

Figaro is not a bass, but a barytone.

Cherubino's character (teenager boy) is actually played by a woman.

It's overplayed, sure, but that is what opera is all about !

    Regards,

  • @karllegrand yeah i know, i love opera.....but still...maybe it was this specific production that i didnt like...Also, "non piu andrai farfallone amoroso"....i thought this was a bass aria?

  • @killerbunny123123 It can be sung be either a bass or a baritone ... there wasn't really a distinction made in Mozart's time, as far as I am aware: they were all "bass-baritones," though some parts were obviously lower than others.

  • this cherubino turns me on.... :)) which recording is this???

  • amazing. super. i cant stop watching this. great!

  • Cherubino vroia sa o fute pe Suzana, dar si Figaro (Hermann Prey) ar fi vrut sa-l fute pe Cherubino (Maria Ewing). ;)

  • Listening to this it's hard to comprehend why Figaro would ever be bass. Baritone rules!

  • It is because Prey is singing it. He may have been baritone, but his voice is more mellow than most baritones. I really like him because his voice is warm. It is similar to bass in ways. A lot of baritones don't have that quality in their voice that he did.

  • amazing! superb!

  • Hermann Prey....

    SPLENDIDO !!!

    five stars !

    grazie per il post

  • Great. The first baritone Figaro I liked.

  • not bed.

  • hai scritto non letto..

    not bad

  • Here the situation, in synthesis.

The Count Almaviva has discovered Cherubino( the boy) in the room of the Countess and, jealous, decides to remove him from his home, forcing him from the soldier. Figaro sings this aria then to greet the young page, who must abandon his love affairs and devote themselves to the tough profession of arms.

    Sorry for the English...

  • I don't get what is going on in this scene. What is he saying to her?

  • Also, the character he's singing to is male, although performed by an actress.

That sort of thing is common in opera.

    It's called a "breeches role."

  • What's happening in this scene? I don't get it.

  • Mein Gott, der singt das wie fürs Musikantenstadl. Völlig flach! Das kann der doch besser!!!

  • Why does he sound so flat?

  • I bet he was a joy to be around. He was so energetic and jolly. I can't help not to smile when I watch him as Figaro in Mozart's and Rossini's operas.

  • Look for Hermann Prey in Wikipedia. How he became a singer. A great story.

  • grande interprete

  • Comment removed

  • i definitely agree with you do you consider Bryn terfel one of those greats?

  • I love to sing this aria.

  • Magnifico

  • Personally I think is role is more for a bass.

But I must admit that Prey is great for it too !

  • No, Figaro was written for a basso cantante, a bass with good height - like Cesare Siepi, his performance of this aria (with Erich Kleiber conducting) is my absolute favorite. Kleiber's conducting is a lot more fleet-footed and charming compared to Böhm's wooden conducting too.

  • i agree, I was wrong, but is a role best played by tenors, my opinion! but you are wright.

  • Why stop at tenors?

    What's wrong with a mezzo?

  • Al concerto di tromboni,

    Di bombarde, di cannoni,

Thank you so much for posting this video.

  • on a turné ce film en quel an?

  • @liric01994 1975

  • Hmmm ti amo <33

  • i absolutely love that fact that this is an italian opera composed by a german-speaking austrian based on a french play about a spanish barber...

  • Right! Isn't it amazing. Very well pointed!

  • u forgot that the singer is german ^^

  • @chevrox Viva l'Europa!

  • @chevrox That my friend, is true internationalism.

  • @chevrox ...sung here by a German Baritone. Wonderful interpretation!

  • @chevrox that's the European spirit, my friend

  • @chevrox I'm absolutly agree! Just a genious like Mozart did it :) Of course Lorenzo da Ponte was truly important because the wonderful libreto :)

  • Fantastic!!! xD

  • wonderful a dear friend of mine here was always a personal friend of his, prey also was a good cook

  • io la sto studiando ora cn il flauto!!

    cmq mi fa troppo ridere!!!XD

  • suonati meno il flauto...

  • he's SOhot.

  • Polvazo!

  • Hermann Prey is the best Figaro I ever heard.

I really love "Farfallone Amoroso". I think it is the most universal antimilitaristic Hymn ever written (Perhaps I exaggerate!).

  • Love it.

Hate to say it, but he outshines Christian van Horn. =p

  • Magnifico....

  • Nice deep voice that could rival Bryn Terfel.

  • one of the best i have seen hermann and maria ewing

  • This was one of my all time favorite productions, as noted in a previous posting, the cast was absolutley stellar!!!!

  • Very nice presentation!!!

  • So unforgettable and wonderful video !!!. Thank you,Cheers, ~Sergio.

  • I love his voice and acting. He was brilliant. I grew up with Prey as Figaro in this very film...

I actually cried the day he died. Thank you so much for putting this clip of his up.

  • not only is he the best figaro, he's also the best papagano(magic flute), have you seen his "the erl-king" by Schubert ? his voice is like golden ray of sunshine.

  • My absolute favorite Figaro! Legendary singers

Hermann Prey, Mirella Freni, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Kiri Te Kanawa, Maria Ewing all together in a single video, isn´t it perfect?

Conducted by Karl Böhm and staged by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. thanks for posting!

  • Estupendo! Wonderful! Wunderbar! Splendido!

For me Hermay Prey is the best Figaro ever! My second option is Bryn Terfel

  • meraviglioso....

  • my dad played this when i went into the military and said that he was very proud an exact opposite of this song by the way this song rocks

  • lo stile italiano,please.

  • can't wait to sing that

  • I can only assume you mixed up this brilliant performance with something else, otherwise I must severely doubt your sanity

  • GREAT GREAT GREAT

  • Who's that playing Cherubino? We don't get to hear him/her but she sure is hot in those pantaloons ... nice buffo stumble too. :)

  • That Cherubino is played by American mezzo Maria Ewing. I have seen a filmed production from Glyndebourne of her as Rosina in The Barber of Seville, and she is good both as an actress and singer, with nice exotic looks too, probably a mulatta or part native American.

In playing the title role Richard Strauss' opera SALOME, she was noted for actually appearing completely nude on stage as per the actual stage direction! Maybe she wanted to show how nice looking she was :)

  • Prey was always compared to Fischer-Dieskau - they are soooo different - F-D was a great intellectual and had a wonderful voice - very light, but somehow he managed to sing Verdi and Wagner well. Prey was just glorious-it was one of those perfectly produced voices, round and luscious. He was also a wonderful person.

  • Is that actually Fischer-Dieskau in the background, laughing at the scene? I think he is playing the Count Almaviva. Nice to see both baritones here in one film, because they were the great German baritones of the 20th century.

But clearly, Prey has the better role in this opera!

  • Bad?????

And what is good for you????

This is one of the most amazing productions of Figaro on video, with only legends singing, Böhm conducting and J.P.Ponelle directing..... If this is not good enough for you, I'm very sorry for you...

  • I would recommend everyone to see Hermann Prey as Gabriel Von Eisentein in Die Fledermaus. Just write "Die Fledermaus - Kiri Te Kanawa". Check out Clip 2, 5 and 6. He is absolutelly wonderfull in that role, as always.

  • Antillas 636, my friend, Merry Christmas to you! Have you heard of the release by "Deutsche Grammophon" of the complete Mahler/Bernstein DVD collection? I've seen it on TV some years ago and it is very good. For those whom are not (yet...) Hermann Prey fans, just check out how Bernstein salutes him at the end of the 8th Simphony!

  • Thanks a lot. Happy new year for you.

You know I had the opportunity of buying that DVD several times but I was never really convinced. Now that you are telling me this, I `ll buy it as soon as I can. Rgds.

  • Thanks for posting! :-)

  • This is the first opera I ever saw on TV. When was it made? Around 1979?

  • Actually it was in 1976.

  • Wow, that makes me feel old!

  • superbe barython bravo

  • Gracias Mozart y Perry.

    Las mentes privilegiadas

    siempre estareis ahí...

  • Ts ts ts......a Figaro wearing a three-day-beard!!! ;-) He´s really great!

  • I do not know if you have already seen it but I would recommend you to see Hermann Prey singing Carmina Burana.

You can search by writing "Estuans Interius", it is the third video. The song is in latin but Hermann Prey delights you with his singing and acting as always. Check it out!

  • Hello Antillas636, I´ve already seen it and of course Hermann Prey always delights me with his singing.

  • Antillas, Hermann Prey singing estuans Interius is simply superb,as usual. What a great singer!

  • Yes no one outdid Hermann for playing the character and having a superb baritone voice.

  • My God. Everytime I see this clip I get more convinced that Hermann Prey was, is and will be the best Figaro of all times. Noone and I mean absolutelly NOONE is going to be able to match his wonderfull voice and realistic acting.

  • magnifico baritono e bravissimo anche nel barbiere di siviglia nel ruolo di figaro

  • Best Baritone ever. Too bad he is not with us anymore and I will always regret not to have the chance to see him on stage. Thank God we still have this kind of things.

  • The guy looks like Jack Nicholson....good job though.

  • Best Figaro ever!!! My favourite baritone singer, and his spectacular aria...
