@mayexize sorry it took so long to respond here. The ribbon is actually filter media, it's just a coiled plastic band that's unwound and it kind of go's all over the place to fill in space in the filter chamber. Bacteria attaches to this and grows, and it will help trap some debris that comes through it. Much like a scrubby pad, bio balls, etc that all biofilters use in some way.
