Strangely, my experience is completely different, google not only pickups up and indexes nofollow links but also show that links in webmasters control panel. What I understand is if the comment or link spammy its ignored, But its has some content and is of value, the no follow link will get some weight-age atleast.

I really hate SEO. But it was just one of those things I used to do since? it was an absolutely necessity. Tools like Senuke really made life a lot easier but until I met this little tool InsaneBacklinks(dot)com

Great video! I never thought about this aspect, and was always discouraged when I’d realize that so many blog’s comments were no-follow. It makes great sense to make an awesome or interesting comment to grab other reader’s attention and make them want to click over to your site. You could gain yourself a few extra loyal readers which still looks good for Google as your traffic goes up! Thank you for reminding us how important quality comments can be over the follow and no-follow links.
Everyone uses nofollows so how G will rank anything ? The facts is its just to scare people out from spamming (which is good). There are numerous experiments on the web that proves that. Look it up.
If one good valuable true hyperlink (dofollow) is more powerful than 10,000 nofollow links from blogs, then why should people want to blog? Once people find out that most blogs are nofollow and they understand the implications, then they stop blogging. It is a very rare thing to find a true blog where people are interacting. The only true interaction I have seen is in Online games and Facebook. Outside of that it does not really seem to exist.
it's possible to rank with no-follow links, you can see them on ur Google Webmaster Tools "Links to your site", there appear follow and no-follow links.
If i get people to see my blog, talk about my blog or link my blog i have more chances that my traffic grows then my regular users and then by relation my dofollow links and my pagerank.
As matt says we have to get the big picture and that picture is much bigger than google, his pagerank and his seo.
Again a very interesting answer. Matt is getting better at this i think. He knows that people want to know if this matters to Google or not and he answers accordingly. Not leaving that part a bit unanswered like in very large number of past video's. Looking forward to the next answer.
@Winger4u That is because you shouldn't care about Google or for that matter any other search engine, but rather you should care about the USERS. They are what is important, and it's in them that you should focus all your energy.
I stopped posting to forums that auto-slap nofollow to my links and to link to my profile. I figured, why would I contribute content to them if they treat me like a spammer. From now on I only post to forums that allow regular links and considers others as a waste of my time.
@Snytkine believe or not, ive heard more than 3 stories of people building rankings for non competitive keyword just with nofollow links. google it bro
Yeah it's possible to rank with no-follow links, you can see them on ur Google Webmaster Tools "Links to your site", there appear follow and no-follow links.
Actually, Matt is answering your question. He's saying, don't ignore the ripple effect that traffic to your site will have.
Even if the nofollow keeps specific link juice from flowing to your site, there are other factors (that Google does monitor) that will be positively impacted by your increased traffic.
Back to basics, remember: create a great experience for your users, bring interest to the site, and Google will take note and follow, one way or another.
Very good answer. If people will just remember to focus on quality they will be amazed at how all the voluntary, follow links they will gather. You also don't have to be so obsessed with SEO and how many nofollow/follow links you have. I don't write for spiders, I write for humans.
Very good and interesting video, Matt. But besides the visitors, will Google follow the no-follow links in the future? Because almost every webmaster is no-following their sites now to hold their pagerank and that's not a good thing.
Ok, no follow does not work for search engines. But, what about social signals? All the links used in social signals are nofollowed.

Firstly i will say that if you have a web or a blog getting better pagerank and seo is one of the most important things but not the unique.
As matt cutts says there are many ways to get traffic.
Mi blog gets lots of traffic through mail in a newsletter, through facebook, twitter, etc..
And lots of referring sites that have links to my blog or my blog feed and those are nofollow links.

Of course the question Dan wanted to ask was: Are nofollow links worth getting for SEO? Or are they almost irrelevant for SEO?"
And I'm still waiting for the answer :)

No, if you provide good and interesting content people will follow you. And the more followers you have, the more traffic you will get.
