In every comment section of every video, there is someone that has to say something about the person in the video not being 'as good as' someone else. I always get a kick out of that. Define 'as good as'....
@GRNDSLMHTTR3 Well from tour to tour or other few tours he comes up with a set solo to play. A Neil Peart solo for the past 30 years has never been an improvisation, it's almost like a song in the set list. He writes a set drum solo to play at each show.
Peart is better technically than Buddy Rich, but not as good as Buddy Rich or John Bonham, John Henry played with great feel, speed, and power, and he was 100% self taught just like Buddy Rich, those two guys were the best because you always new it was them when they played. Neil Peart is excellent, really really good, dont get me wrong, but he just hasn't got the feel the other two guys had.
Buddy played MATCHED GRIP, too! He may have bagged on it one one of his videos but if you search You Tube, you can find several examples of him using that grip. He incorporated French, German, American, Moeller, Gladstone, Index / Thumb fulcrum, Constant Release, etc. and probably didn't even think about it. He just PLAYED the drums -- that what he was, PLAYER -- not a WORKER, or a TECHNICIAN. Let's all remember to PLAY the drums and have a good time. That's why we do it. Geez...
Why is everyone bringing travis barker into every fucking drum video, dont judge a drummer by the style he plays. If you clearly dont like his style, MAYBE DONT WATCH HIS VIDEOS! drummers all get along with eachother because they all have the same purpose, to play an instrument they enjoy.
@itsmiketehdrummer i don't think i would say matched grip would limit ur ability to play jazz. sure, trad is more intuitive for jazz but some of the hippest cats around play matched like Jeff Ballard and Bill Stewart and those dudes are monsters! Also alot of studio, r&n, and funk dudes are pretty learned in jazz and they mostly play matched. but then again buddy was very opinionated jackass. He trashed rock drummers and did note for note impressions of john bonham and called it BS.
@oLdSkOoLkisS i don't know... if someone was saying that they could play buddy rich stuff better than buddy rich, and then use doubles, then i can see him being disgraced, but to use a second pedal purely for accent and for the musical benefit of having it.... i think buddy would applaud that.
Finicky people here. Lets make one thing clear, Peart is a "Rock" drummer and not a "Jazz" drummer. That said, Peart is quite possibly the greatest rock drummer ever. There are a few others that come to mind such as Ian Paice of Deep Purple who also plays Jazz and Big Band. Peart is a magnificent and extremely talented drummer. I do think the world of Buddy Rich but these are two different genres. In my mind only two rock drummers could have pulled the Buddy Rich Tribute off, Peart or Paice.
Neil Peart is the most overrated drummer of all time. The following drummers make Neil Peart look worthless as a drummer: Dennis Chambers, Chad Wackerman, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gary Novak, Dave Weckl, Danny Gottlieb, Jack DeJohnette, Jeff Watts, Adam Nussbaum, Antonio Sanchez, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, and Mike Mangini.

One of the greatest rock drummers and great peformance but Buddy was better. Buddy played with more natural ease, had greater speed, dexterity, feel and flow. It invites the comparison.
@ziggy8392 If you watch some of the great jazz drummers like Gene Krupa, Sonny Payne, or Jo Jones you'll get an idea of what it means to swing, especially in a big band setting. Check out some of their videos and you'll see what I mean. Type in Count Basie Corner Pocket and watch Sonny Payne. THAT is how you swing a big band! Nobody would get a job playing in a jazz band playing like that. He's obviously one of the all-time great rock drummers, but that doesn't make him a good jazz drummer.
Neil is a great rock drummer but just doesn't have the speed in his hands like Buddy. No one does, his rolls are not even close to Buddy's. Would have loved to see Paice and Palmer at the tribute.
Sam "Samus" Paulicelli (Decrepit Birtt) > Travis Barker...now go bite a fucking curb and have your fathers to the stomping for the mistake he's let on this earth. all travis barker does is rolls and shitty basic chops. he doesn't even have a quarter of rich's , speed, cymbalwork, complex time signatures, or fills...you fucking posers waltzing in here thinking you know shit...stick to your tryhard bands and keep your opinions at hot topic faggots.
If you watch in the beginning he is playing "big band" jazz inspired drumming with the band, then they let him go off on his own. Just look how he switches from traditional grip to match when he does his own solo so technical it is a blend of both and a great piece of drumming so why not just leave it at that. Neil and Buddy are the apex of drumming no matter what they are playing. My $.02

How is it okay that Neil went up on stage during a Buddy Tribute and played his own solo and really nothing at all Buddy-like? Is that not poor taste, at least? Buddy is probably rolling the grave after Neils solo here...
It's like Courtney Love going up onstage during a Janis Joplin tribute and playing something completely off-topic...offensive, really.
Why didn't Travis or Joey get to play the Buddy Rich tribute? Go up there and blast beats..awesome
@Oziedog That's fine, but when people are saying that this is great jazz drumming then they don't know very much about jazz. They're just saying that it's great jazz playing simply because Peart is the one behind the kit. I love Peart's rock drumming, and he's probably my favorite rock drummer, along with Bonham. However, jazz and rock are two different things and you can't just jump right into jazz, and if it wasn't Peart playing here nobody would be calling this great jazz drumming.
@ChiTown7721 He was just getting into jazz drumming at this point. A couple years later, he took up learning the style in full with Freddie Gruber, which has led to some pretty interesting fills on the past two or three albums. Even in retrospect, Neil's mentioned how he just jumped in without much preparation.
@Suddiefats you have to remember that Peart is from a rock band, so he really doesn't play much jazz in the first place. besides, Peart himself said that he wasn't very satisfied by his drumming performance in this concert.
@teenmetalhead666 lol he is sitting like buddy rich. look at the west side story drum solo and you will see what im talking about. neil sits significantly different when he is drumming in his normal posture.
Who said this was an improv? Hey sunny, this is a drum solo where he fused jazz, and his rock solo. He has played that a bunch of times and he ran the gammitt of just about every drum style. From rock to rythym and blues and finished with jazz in honor of Buddy Rich and big jazz bands.
Playing dbl bass cross over is far from anything that can called simple and takes specific dexterity.
Send me a video of you drumming. Until then you are a liar.
@Trekker1801 youre fucking retaded, many drummers use 4 pieces, i use a 4 piece. not only did he write that solo for that kit, so no improv, but whenever you need to hit a mounted tom, one will sufice same as floor tom
@sunnyld1 So because you use a 4 piece then that validates the performance? You're dynamic. I love people who have to throw in what they do to feel important. News flash genius: No one care what you play. We're talking about the Professor, not you.
And I'm sure Neil told you personally that he wrote it for a 4 piece huh? All I was saying is how I admired his skill for taking such an orchestrated piece & whittling it down for a small set up. Quit giving your life meaning by demeaning others.
@Mr1337drummer I watched a video right here on youtube of Travis Barker. I don't normally come right out with negativity toward any fellow drummers out there and i wont here either. Ive been playing these things since im 8 and im a few years south of 50 now. I will say, however that theres nothing i need to learn from him. Humor me for about 9 minutes and search youtube for Der Trommler by Neil Peart and watch an "old fart",as you say give a drum lesson.
@Mr1337drummer Either you're just trolling or you need to learn a few things about drumming. Both Neil and Buddy has way more technique And feel than Travis. He may be a good drummer in his certain area, (although I for one have never understood why he's so praised) but he have nothing against these two. He's probably influenced by them two.
@TVOham alright, im a major fan of buddy rich, ed shaughnessy, neil peart, and all those people. even though i agree travis barker doesnt compare to them at all i still respect him as a musician.
@TVOham Just like fenderjb2112 said, "Why does everyone try to rank musicians? Just enjoy the music, appreciate the skill, and don't hate." Don't reply to the comments, just thumb them down and flag them, don't fight fire with fire. It doesnt work
@TVOham I would put money on the fact that he is better than you. Which, in fact, would make you the worst drummer of all time. I don't much care for him, but you cannot demote his musical talent because you don't like him.
@Jabarichonicles You'll see him hit the throwoff at about 2:44 as he goes into the snare solo.Happens real fast tho. Wish mine worked as flawlessly. Might be time for me to fix it i guess.
This is a wonderful solo but does not stack up against buddy eg sinatra concert solo. Note how buddy starts off by punctuating not with the bass drum, which he ignores, but with the left foot on the hi-hats. no one has tried to do that since buddy. no one has that independence of the left foot on the hi-hat. instead we get this monotonous throbbing on the bass drum. buddy leaves that till late in the solo. He knew how to structure the solo dynamically, to play the delicate stuff first.
To all the 8 and 9 year olds just starting out who feel they need a big kit to sound good: Watch this video and see its not true. Its the skill you have, not the size of the kit. Extra drums are just different colors on the pallet,so to speak. When i first started i felt the same way but after almost 40 years, trust me when i tell you that its not the size of the kit but rather size of the heart and desire to learn to make the instrument sing.
I was a Neil fan until I first saw this. I realized he isn't much of an all around drummer. He's doing the same dam solo he did for like 40 years here. Marvin Smitty Smith can blow him a away this one hand tied behind his back. I don't think he has the ability to improvise either. The Rush was great though so he he is awesome with that stuff and should stick to that. He should get some new solo licks though.
Fail. They should have got me in there.

My $.02

Bottom line, IMO:
How is it okay that Neil went up on stage during a Buddy Tribute and played his own solo and really nothing at all Buddy-like? Is that not poor taste, at least? Buddy is probably rolling the grave after Neils solo here...
It's like Courtney Love going up onstage during a Janis Joplin tribute and playing something completely off-topic...offensive, really.
Why didn't Travis or Joey get to play the Buddy Rich tribute? Go up there and blast beats..awesome
;)

@Oziedog That's fine, but when people are saying that this is great jazz drumming then they don't know very much about jazz. They're just saying that it's great jazz playing simply because Peart is the one behind the kit. I love Peart's rock drumming, and he's probably my favorite rock drummer, along with Bonham. However, jazz and rock are two different things and you can't just jump right into jazz, and if it wasn't Peart playing here nobody would be calling this great jazz drumming.
ChiTown7721 1 year ago
@ChiTown7721 He was just getting into jazz drumming at this point. A couple years later, he took up learning the style in full with Freddie Gruber, which has led to some pretty interesting fills on the past two or three albums. Even in retrospect, Neil's mentioned how he just jumped in without much preparation.

The Solo Was Ripping! but it definitely wasn't jazz! not much swinging :(
Suddiefats 1 year ago
@Suddiefats you have to remember that Peart is from a rock band, so he really doesn't play much jazz in the first place. besides, Peart himself said that he wasn't very satisfied by his drumming performance in this concert.

@Suddiefats well he's there to play for the band, and for tribute to buddy, but neil got to do neil :P

And to think he took The Rhythm Method and cut it down to a 4 piece kit shows not only skill, but an inherent ability to improvise. Truly a master...
Trekker1801 1 year ago
@Trekker1801 youre fucking retaded, many drummers use 4 pieces, i use a 4 piece. not only did he write that solo for that kit, so no improv, but whenever you need to hit a mounted tom, one will sufice same as floor tom
sunnyld1 1 year ago

@Mr1337drummer Buddy was Neils idol, and Neil could kick yours and travis barker in a solo, a drum off, or with a single fill.
PhilConey1 1 year ago
@Mr1337drummer Either you're just trolling or you need to learn a few things about drumming. Both Neil and Buddy has way more technique And feel than Travis. He may be a good drummer in his certain area, (although I for one have never understood why he's so praised) but he have nothing against these two. He's probably influenced by them two.

I don't much care for him, but you cannot demote his musical talent because you don't like him.

howd he swich back on the snare after the cowbell trick?
Jabarichonicles 1 year ago
@Jabarichonicles You'll see him hit the throwoff at about 2:44 as he goes into the snare solo.Happens real fast tho. Wish mine worked as flawlessly. Might be time for me to fix it i guess.
specwar64 1 year ago
@specwar64
yea...i though he had a foot snare throw off...which would have been awsome
Jabarichonicles 1 year ago
This is a wonderful solo but does not stack up against buddy eg sinatra concert solo. Note how buddy starts off by punctuating not with the bass drum, which he ignores, but with the left foot on the hi-hats. no one has tried to do that since buddy. no one has that independence of the left foot on the hi-hat. instead we get this monotonous throbbing on the bass drum. buddy leaves that till late in the solo. He knew how to structure the solo dynamically, to play the delicate stuff first.
0090andrew 1 year ago
