  • Fail. They should have got me in there.

  • @drummerbadass1 post vids or shut up

  • Who are the 11 idiots?

  • NEEDS MORE COWBELL MOFUKA

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • neil peart is the best drummer ever, not dave lombardo just face it its just true

  • neal peart could kill chuck norris and don't think twice

  • if only buddy rich and neal peart could have a baby

  • @lorijerr11 your fucking stupid buddy, Peart and Lombardo are completely different style drummers smart one

  • Peart is a god...that is all

  • you suck compared to dave lumbarto

  • @lorijerry11

don't be so fucking ignorant .

  • haha looks like kaiser soze

  • the cowbells could use more peart :D

  • pure class, taste, and talent. a great tribute solo to a master by a master.

  • There's a bird outside and it's chirping in-time with this... bird's got good taste...

  • Wish I knew. Would love to see the show myself. Incredible video!

  • i love that POP on the snare :D

  • oh my fucking god this is the sickest thing ever

  • effortless, genious, legend should be induced into the hall of fame on his own forget rush

  • @TheKalen486 rush is just as baddass. they are all great musicians.

  • The fact that Neil was the one chosen for the Buddy Rich tribute band tells you his stature amongst the greatest of all time. Buddy Rich is the undisputable greatest ever, but Neil's dexterity shows here. Listening to his big band stuff, amazing.

  • WTF WOW...WHY ....Dudes good but looks like hes way to tall for drums, yeah plays the shit out of em but looks like hunchback....... Y eah Niel Peart ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!

  • genial!!!

  • Before I left this planet, I wanted to see George Lynch live, Geddy Lee Live, Neal Peart Live, and Geoff Tate Live. I only have George Lynch to scratch off my list. Btut I've seen Sean Kinney and Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) and Edward Van Halen and Reb Beach (Dokken, at the time). I thnk I'm doing well.

  • anyone know what kind of snare he`s using?

  • 1:07 watch his left hand... unbelievable

  • Still the master......

  • I have seen him in concert many times! It's the only drummer I don't leave to ppe when the drum solo comes on!

  • his arms must be DYING! cause im a drummer and when i play songs by paramore, my arms finish dead. i cant imagine playing that!

  • @teensloveus then you must be too tense, grip your sticks to hard or maybe you have to reach too far for a cymbal or something. Try to feel comfortable and if you do get tired, take a break.

  • @Pilsberrydoughboy11 thanks so much! im gonna try doing that and see if theres a difference in how fast i get tired :D thanks alot! you realy helped me with your tips :)

  • @teensloveus try some rush songs like spirit of radio or tom sawyer. theyre great songs with killer drum parts. and theyll leave you way more tired than paramore lol. and look up matt helders from the arctic monkeys, he's a beast too.

  • @metzepp dude you're totally right, the hardest one has to be... la villa strangiato, peart says he even feels lucky when he gets it right

  • Neil Peart doesn't look like Tom Hanks.

Tom Hanks looks like Neil Peart.

  • What year was this?

  • In every comment section of every video, there is someone that has to say something about the person in the video not being 'as good as' someone else. I always get a kick out of that. Define 'as good as'....

  • my all time favorite drum solo

  • Neil is better

  • jajajajajajaj tom hanks , very good jeje, drummers

  • Tom hanks playin' drumkit ! lol

  • @hybridassassin1991 I never noticed how much he looked like Tom Hanks when he was younger. haha

  • The one thing that bothers me about Neil Peart is that a lot of the time he just plays the exact same solo.

  • @GRNDSLMHTTR3 Well from tour to tour or other few tours he comes up with a set solo to play. A Neil Peart solo for the past 30 years has never been an improvisation, it's almost like a song in the set list. He writes a set drum solo to play at each show.

  • i never knew forest gump was a amazing drummer?

  • Peart is better technically than Buddy Rich, but not as good as Buddy Rich or John Bonham, John Henry played with great feel, speed, and power, and he was 100% self taught just like Buddy Rich, those two guys were the best because you always new it was them when they played. Neil Peart is excellent, really really good, dont get me wrong, but he just hasn't got the feel the other two guys had.

  • but if had he decided to go that route i think he would been one of the great ones

  • So this is where all the rhythm on Youtube has been hiding.

  • Hey Everyone!

Buddy played MATCHED GRIP, too! He may have bagged on it one one of his videos but if you search You Tube, you can find several examples of him using that grip. He incorporated French, German, American, Moeller, Gladstone, Index / Thumb fulcrum, Constant Release, etc. and probably didn't even think about it. He just PLAYED the drums -- that what he was, PLAYER -- not a WORKER, or a TECHNICIAN. Let's all remember to PLAY the drums and have a good time. That's why we do it. Geez...

  • I raped the replay button way T 0:00 Much!

  • Why is everyone bringing travis barker into every fucking drum video, dont judge a drummer by the style he plays. If you clearly dont like his style, MAYBE DONT WATCH HIS VIDEOS! drummers all get along with eachother because they all have the same purpose, to play an instrument they enjoy.

  • Great Drummer!!!!

  • Hes so slouched over. I bet he has major neck pain.

  • @itsmiketehdrummer i don't think i would say matched grip would limit ur ability to play jazz. sure, trad is more intuitive for jazz but some of the hippest cats around play matched like Jeff Ballard and Bill Stewart and those dudes are monsters! Also alot of studio, r&n, and funk dudes are pretty learned in jazz and they mostly play matched. but then again buddy was very opinionated jackass. He trashed rock drummers and did note for note impressions of john bonham and called it BS.

  • true that!! ; < )

  • Buddy would not be impressed believe me.

  • that snare drum sounds like hot sex.

  • now that is class

  • I'm so tired of all these double pedal cheaters....BR would roll over in his grave!!

  • @oLdSkOoLkisS i don't know... if someone was saying that they could play buddy rich stuff better than buddy rich, and then use doubles, then i can see him being disgraced, but to use a second pedal purely for accent and for the musical benefit of having it.... i think buddy would applaud that.

  • such great pocket presence

  • Finicky people here. Lets make one thing clear, Peart is a "Rock" drummer and not a "Jazz" drummer. That said, Peart is quite possibly the greatest rock drummer ever. There are a few others that come to mind such as Ian Paice of Deep Purple who also plays Jazz and Big Band. Peart is a magnificent and extremely talented drummer. I do think the world of Buddy Rich but these are two different genres. In my mind only two rock drummers could have pulled the Buddy Rich Tribute off, Peart or Paice.

  • @MrCrampy

Neil Peart is the most overrated drummer of all time. The following drummers make Neil Peart look worthless as a drummer: Dennis Chambers, Chad Wackerman, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gary Novak, Dave Weckl, Danny Gottlieb, Jack DeJohnette, Jeff Watts, Adam Nussbaum, Antonio Sanchez, Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, and Mike Mangini.

  • @Mortison77577, hey you have mentioned a few drummers on your list that I too admire and yes know that they are better, but again Peart is in a Rock band and is a "rock" drummer. During the mid 70's and 80's there wasn't a better rock drummer than Peart. Make no mistake this guy influenced a whole lot of rock drummers. Stick to one genre at a time...

  • @MrCrampy

I think the Zappa drummers were better in the mid 70's and 80's.

  • @Mortison77577 u mad brah? never heard of any of those bums. Superior Peart is superior.

  • Jordison sucks major dick, worst drummer of all time.

  • not even close to buddy rich.................

  • The man, the myth ... the legend ... the greatest

  • @gjg50

Neil Peart is not the greatest. Not even close.

  • @Mortison77577 Oh hes very close. Im not sure what you are smoking ... but NP is pretty damn good. .. thats an understatement.

So, mister thinks he knows everything, who do you claim to be the "greatest" drummer

  • @gjg50

There's no one greatest drummer. But lots of drummers blow Neil Peart away. Vinnie Colaiuta for one. The number of drummers who have the technical ability to play what Neil Peart plays probably number in the tens of thousands.

  • @Mortison77577 Yeah, i can agree with ya on that, bout the theres no one greatest. Vinnie is really good. Neil, tho, has his own style, just like most drummers out there. I think Neil takes his skills to a higher level and makes his solos interesting and pure.

I see a number of interviews of other drummers, and they mention Neil was a huge influence on them, along with other great drummers Im sure.

Vinnie, again, is really good. however I cant be convinced yet that hes better than Neil

  • @gjg50

Just watch some videos and you'll see. Neil Peart even admits that a lot of players blow him away. He even says that Steve Smith is better.

  • @gjg50

Vinnie, technically speaking, is much better than Peart.

  • Comment removed

  • i like hem better when hes not playing hes big ass drumset

  • Mr. Peart perfection i dont have any i dea what u got in your mind when alot of u are saying travis barker is better than buddy rich and neil i will admit barker aint bad he had some great licks and intros with blink 182 but not better than the masters travis doesnt even have anything on stewart copeland from the police i do have to agree tht playin ur own solo at a memorial concert not the best plan but it still all sounded good great grouping on alot of the rolls in my thoughts it was great

  • Sorry, but when I look at his left hand playing no ghostnotes, playing just the basic ones I mean (i.e. in the beginning), almost lying there lazy, I cannot figure Mr Peart as one of the monster, imho he's nowhere near the real good ones as Steve Smith or Jojo Mayer or many many others.

  • @mellilore Man just becuase he didn't play ghost notes at the start doesn't mean he can't do them just as well lol.. Remember different drummers have different styles!

  • @joe1645 Styles? Imho Peart here desperately want to play and to sound as Buddy did... well, Buddy would have played that shuffle with his left hand doing even more strokes than the right one, using the "push and pull" technique, and/or -if you prefer- upstrokes and downstrokes to give the loud ones.

I bet if only Peart could have done, he would have... but he did not. Sry but that's what I think

  • Neil Peart is the greatest living rock drummer ever.

  • @MIke018

Neil Peart is the most overrated drummer ever.

  • he kinda looks like tom hanks

  • tom hanks plays drums! ^_^

  • Tom Hanks Everybody!!!!

  • only one mounted tom? and he still makes it sound like hes got 7 or 8

  • 8 people clearly have no idea what a drum kit even is

  • One of the greatest rock drummers and great peformance but Buddy was better. Buddy played with more natural ease, had greater speed, dexterity, feel and flow. It invites the comparison.

  • Neil Peart is the greatest drummer there ever was. I also want a cupcake.

  • i love those cow bells

  • 0:46 - 1:00 :)

  • Neil's great in the context of rock drumming but he's way out of place here IMO.

Steve Smith is a much closer match to a modern day Buddy again IMO

  • @schenker4 I agree. I love Neil's rock playing, but he's out of place in a jazz setting.

  • @ChiTown7721 I disagree, he sounded great even before he busted out into YYZ

  • @ziggy8392 If you watch some of the great jazz drummers like Gene Krupa, Sonny Payne, or Jo Jones you'll get an idea of what it means to swing, especially in a big band setting. Check out some of their videos and you'll see what I mean. Type in Count Basie Corner Pocket and watch Sonny Payne. THAT is how you swing a big band! Nobody would get a job playing in a jazz band playing like that. He's obviously one of the all-time great rock drummers, but that doesn't make him a good jazz drummer.

  • Neil is a great rock drummer but just doesn't have the speed in his hands like Buddy. No one does, his rolls are not even close to Buddy's. Would have loved to see Paice and Palmer at the tribute.

  • Sam "Samus" Paulicelli (Decrepit Birtt) > Travis Barker...now go bite a fucking curb and have your fathers to the stomping for the mistake he's let on this earth. all travis barker does is rolls and shitty basic chops. he doesn't even have a quarter of rich's , speed, cymbalwork, complex time signatures, or fills...you fucking posers waltzing in here thinking you know shit...stick to your tryhard bands and keep your opinions at hot topic faggots.

  • If you watch in the beginning he is playing "big band" jazz inspired drumming with the band, then they let him go off on his own. Just look how he switches from traditional grip to match when he does his own solo so technical it is a blend of both and a great piece of drumming so why not just leave it at that. Neil and Buddy are the apex of drumming no matter what they are playing. My $.02

  • Bottom line, IMO:

How is it okay that Neil went up on stage during a Buddy Tribute and played his own solo and really nothing at all Buddy-like? Is that not poor taste, at least? Buddy is probably rolling the grave after Neils solo here...

It's like Courtney Love going up onstage during a Janis Joplin tribute and playing something completely off-topic...offensive, really.

Why didn't Travis or Joey get to play the Buddy Rich tribute? Go up there and blast beats..awesome

    ;)

  • about the least jazziest solo ever......it was an amazing one....but not jazz at all

  • wow it would have sucked for the drummer following neil at this tribute.

  • buddy would be proud!

  • Ninja!

  • @Oziedog That's fine, but when people are saying that this is great jazz drumming then they don't know very much about jazz. They're just saying that it's great jazz playing simply because Peart is the one behind the kit. I love Peart's rock drumming, and he's probably my favorite rock drummer, along with Bonham. However, jazz and rock are two different things and you can't just jump right into jazz, and if it wasn't Peart playing here nobody would be calling this great jazz drumming.

  • @ChiTown7721 He was just getting into jazz drumming at this point. A couple years later, he took up learning the style in full with Freddie Gruber, which has led to some pretty interesting fills on the past two or three albums. Even in retrospect, Neil's mentioned how he just jumped in without much preparation.

  • what ride cymbal is that

  • The Solo Was Ripping! but it definitely wasn't jazz! not much swinging :(

  • @Suddiefats you have to remember that Peart is from a rock band, so he really doesn't play much jazz in the first place. besides, Peart himself said that he wasn't very satisfied by his drumming performance in this concert.

  • @Suddiefats well he's there to play for the band, and for tribute to buddy, but neil got to do neil :P

  • Neil always makes me smile, dude is so happy playing the drums, you got to love it

  • This thing has it's own lyrics! The drums have spoken in the hands of mr. Peart!

  • That dude in the background is digging this!

  • OMG! LMAO! I can't believe Travis Barker's name even come up on this thread. He's better than Buddy Rich? I can't stop laughing.

  • Can someone say Carl Palmer

  • he has terrible posture, inb4 back problems

  • @teenmetalhead666 lol he is sitting like buddy rich. look at the west side story drum solo and you will see what im talking about. neil sits significantly different when he is drumming in his normal posture.

  • First video that comes up when you type "Neil Peart is god."

  • Comment removed

  • Who said this was an improv? Hey sunny, this is a drum solo where he fused jazz, and his rock solo. He has played that a bunch of times and he ran the gammitt of just about every drum style. From rock to rythym and blues and finished with jazz in honor of Buddy Rich and big jazz bands.

Playing dbl bass cross over is far from anything that can called simple and takes specific dexterity.

Send me a video of you drumming. Until then you are a liar.

  • Never heard this before, but nice one Mr Peart.

  • Perfection!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Loved Buddy Rich and love Neil Peart!

  • And to think he took The Rhythm Method and cut it down to a 4 piece kit shows not only skill, but an inherent ability to improvise. Truly a master...

  • @Trekker1801 youre fucking retaded, many drummers use 4 pieces, i use a 4 piece. not only did he write that solo for that kit, so no improv, but whenever you need to hit a mounted tom, one will sufice same as floor tom

  • @sunnyld1 So because you use a 4 piece then that validates the performance? You're dynamic. I love people who have to throw in what they do to feel important. News flash genius: No one care what you play. We're talking about the Professor, not you.

And I'm sure Neil told you personally that he wrote it for a 4 piece huh? All I was saying is how I admired his skill for taking such an orchestrated piece & whittling it down for a small set up. Quit giving your life meaning by demeaning others.

  • @sunnyld1 Until we see you play, then you are a liar.

  • Is he hunching over like buddy rich on purpose?

  • @skatedrumjump not sure that would be pretty cool though he always said he really looked up to neil pert

  • omg...no words

  • dude travis barker pwns both of these old farts!!

  • @Mr1337drummer I watched a video right here on youtube of Travis Barker. I don't normally come right out with negativity toward any fellow drummers out there and i wont here either. Ive been playing these things since im 8 and im a few years south of 50 now. I will say, however that theres nothing i need to learn from him. Humor me for about 9 minutes and search youtube for Der Trommler by Neil Peart and watch an "old fart",as you say give a drum lesson.

  • @Mr1337drummer Buddy was Neils idol, and Neil could kick yours and travis barker in a solo, a drum off, or with a single fill.

  • @Mr1337drummer Either you're just trolling or you need to learn a few things about drumming. Both Neil and Buddy has way more technique And feel than Travis. He may be a good drummer in his certain area, (although I for one have never understood why he's so praised) but he have nothing against these two. He's probably influenced by them two.

  • @Mr1337drummer evry fuckin kiddie drumms better then travis, biatch

  • @Mr1337drummer

Barker sucks major dick, worst drummer of all time.

  • @TVOham alright, im a major fan of buddy rich, ed shaughnessy, neil peart, and all those people. even though i agree travis barker doesnt compare to them at all i still respect him as a musician.

  • he's better than you, ergo, not the worst drummer of all time.

  • @ElCigaroCubano Hardly

  • @TVOham I would put money on the fact that he is better than you. Which, in fact, would make you the worst drummer of all time. I don't much care for him, but you cannot demote his musical talent because you don't like him.

  • @M3GAMOS3S

    He's not.

He plays louder than me, that's about all he has on me.

  • @TVOham If that is the case, then why are you not famous? I'm sure with such talent, you'd want to share it with someone.

  • @M3GAMOS3S

Has nothing to do with talent.

  • @TVOham he just plays loud thats all

  • @TVOham for ur info Barker is sick 2 maybe not as sick as BR but he is also sick

  • @TVOham Travis Barker is an awesome drummer you just can't deny it , the only thing is that Neil Peart and Buddy Rich are better that's all :D

  • @Martingigs1997 There is nothing awesome about him. He plays blast beats that 8th graders can do.

  • howd he swich back on the snare after the cowbell trick?

  • @Jabarichonicles You'll see him hit the throwoff at about 2:44 as he goes into the snare solo.Happens real fast tho. Wish mine worked as flawlessly. Might be time for me to fix it i guess.

  • @specwar64

yea...i though he had a foot snare throw off...which would have been awsome

  • This is a wonderful solo but does not stack up against buddy eg sinatra concert solo. Note how buddy starts off by punctuating not with the bass drum, which he ignores, but with the left foot on the hi-hats. no one has tried to do that since buddy. no one has that independence of the left foot on the hi-hat. instead we get this monotonous throbbing on the bass drum. buddy leaves that till late in the solo. He knew how to structure the solo dynamically, to play the delicate stuff first.

  • To all the 8 and 9 year olds just starting out who feel they need a big kit to sound good: Watch this video and see its not true. Its the skill you have, not the size of the kit. Extra drums are just different colors on the pallet,so to speak. When i first started i felt the same way but after almost 40 years, trust me when i tell you that its not the size of the kit but rather size of the heart and desire to learn to make the instrument sing.

  • eeeeeeyyyyyaaayyyyaauu

  • i really like this a lot

  • Neil is the most believable and enjoyable drummer for me bcz of his artistry in how he phrases n positions rhythms in suspenseful ways that thrill.

  • buddy would be so fuckin proud of neil, i know i am :):):)

  • sweet beat at the 50 second mark. simple yet elegant haha

  • this gave me a boner

  • Its nice to see all these drummers from all genres of music pay homage to buddy rich

  • wow hes even bending his back over like buddy rich does

    thats cool

  • I play the cowbell part every day;....

  • is this when he still played ludwig?

  • Song title? ... Anyone?

  • Dont you just love what Neil Peart can do with such a simple drum-kit

  • was that improvised or did he remember that shit

  • I was a Neil fan until I first saw this. I realized he isn't much of an all around drummer. He's doing the same dam solo he did for like 40 years here. Marvin Smitty Smith can blow him a away this one hand tied behind his back. I don't think he has the ability to improvise either. The Rush was great though so he he is awesome with that stuff and should stick to that. He should get some new solo licks though.

  • Why does everyone try to rank musicians? Just enjoy the music, appreciate the skill, and don't hate.

  • @fenderjb2112 I hate green beans is that ok?
