@larrygentry You don't understand. It's a metaphor. We should not fear. Fear is just an illusion. When you think about it that way and see outside of what's in the movie, than you'll understand and appreciate this scene.
Are you guys talking about the movie Dune, about which David Lynch said, "I started selling out on Dune. Looking back, it's no one's fault but my own. I probably shouldn't have done that picture, but I saw tons and tons of possibilities for things I loved, and this was the structure to do them in."? The film that Frank Herbert himself disavowed?
I can't believe the great and exalted Penny Arcade would link to this instead of a scene from the original movie. I love Dune, and I love PA, but this version...
Ugh. While not perfect, the Dune movie version of this scene is infinitely better. The script, acting and special effects are all terrible here. It says something that the creators of this series couldn't produce something that looked better then something that appeared in the late 1970's (over three decades earlier).
actually, it was released in 1984, directed by david lynch after Eraserhead made him famous, and produced by Dino DeLaurentiis' daughter, her first assignment. the budget for that movie was epic, and it was over 3 hours, while this is a television miniseries and had a much much smaller budget.
I think part of their restriction on this scene might have something to do with being made for TV. I think I like the 1984 movie better, especially if you get ahold of all the scenes they deleted out, but 9 times out of 10 when I'm watching either of the movies, I follow it up with the other version. The 2 of them together almost make a whole.
Kelvinian, in that exact wording, yes. Dune. But, it's a basic tenet of Zen as well. "All is an illusion. Pain, fear, hatred, love.. all are an illusion of a mayflys existance. Only the mayfly exists."
That's the litany-against-fear. It was invented by Frank Herbert, yes. But a lot of the contents of the Dune series, at least the ones Frank wrote, derive to some extent from "oriental" cultures, from Egypt to Japan. I can't say what he based it on.
Yes, it comes from Dune, the litany against fear. The Bene Gesserit sisterhood teaches it to disciples, and Paul's mother taught it to Paul, among many Bene Gesserit secrets he wasn't supposed to know.
Yeah - pretty much like anything SciFi network gets their hands on, the adaption was garbage. I thought I was watching some trumped up opera and was half expecting elmer fudd and bugs bunny to zip out and start screaming about their spice and magic helmet.
as in he makes clever metaphors about things that he hates or doesn't agree with, but he never has anything else to say, his posts are all long elaborately written metaphors about what he doesn't like, the style never changes.
many people think that the lynch version is better but for anyone who has read the books, SciFi should be the only way to go. It might have had mostly the right dialog but it was all out of context.
I agree to a point. I don't see how people can claim the David Lynch version is better. It's like saying the Spider-Man 3 movie is better than any of the actual comic books. I liked Sci-Fi's channel's production value and special effects and the scenes and dialog were still right on with the books (which I haven't finished the son's books but at least I have read the father's books.)
The David Lynch movie may not follow the book closely, but most of the actors still did an amazing job. And the cast was phenomenal. Jurgen Prochnow, Jose Ferrer, Max von Sydow, Brad Dourif, Everett McGill, Dean Stockwell, Sean Young... not so much Patrick Stewart, though. Pretty much all of them did better jobs than the nobodies in the Scifi channel version. I'd rather watch a well-directed well-acted story that departs from the book than a bad one that's more faithful to the book.
That's STRICTLY biased opinions, I think the Sci-Fi version was closer and it was more important to be faithful to the material then do the disservice that movie did. I would watch the miniseries and all the time it had to dedicate to making sure it was complete than 90 minutes crunched down when it's not possible to really get into Dune's true spirit in that amount of time.
jeebus, harsh. considering that this is the only video on youtube of the pain box i think he did a very nice metaphor (not to kiss ass or anything ...)
Ugh, the David Lynch version made me sick to my stomach. The casting, acting, and artistic style weren't at all in the spirit of the novels. It's so dumbed-down and melodramatic...pretty much the same thing that happened to the Harry Potter movies. I've never seen this version, but it looks better.

God this mini-series blows. Someone needs to make a Dune movie right. Or erase this pitiful attempt from history.

Penny arcade, however I've been a huge fan of the books. Is this from the 'first movie' (1970's?) or the never one (2001's?)
