good video dave personally although i dont know which knives i would pick i think its totally up to you on which ones you like best because people have different environments i may carry a mora for my woodland another guy may carry a machete because he lives in the jungle and another may just carry a swiss army knife because he lives in a desert. gear is totally your choice i could recommend something to someone and say its good but whether it works for them is another story, all the best
Regarding Mora's, there is nothing wrong with Mora's, I have seen them cut down 4" treees and all the way down to fine and detailed work. A few of the discount knife catalogs have a Mora copy "Wahoo Killer." It is a copy of the 860mg and they are $1.99 each. I bought 4 and have used them for every camp chore there is, if you break one,.no big deal, grab another and move on. I have yet to break one. The important thing about a knife, no matter brand or cash value, does it work for YOU,
@PracticalBushcraft1 Well said My Brother.. I couldn't have put it better. I'm honestly getting a bit tired with people (not you) telling other people that what THEY think is best.. is what everyone should do. I have been practicing bushcraft for 21 years now.. and have found out what works for me in certain situations. Might not work for everyone.. that's ok! Do what is best for you.. Thanks for a great post!
@BushcraftOnFire Thank You ! I have learned that what I think is best is usually FUBAR for other people. Same as you, I have been Bushcrafting for a great many years, I have found that the simplest tool is usually the best tool FOR ME. I have seen some "Bad" tools, good tools and great tools, BUT, these are only my opinions, what I think is bad, may work very well for the next person. I really like the way you "TEACH and EXPLAIN," Keep up the good work.
I have an old hickory knife i gave 15 dollars for. and I'd take in to the woods before i would ever take one of those 500 dollar knives.I can spit a log just as good with it as I can an axes. and it will still be sharp enough to gut and skin a rabbit with.Why does any one need to go spend 200 buck on a knife
@mogges1 Thanks for your comments Bro.. As I have said many times.. these are MY choices. I never said these were "the best knives" or that anyone else should carry/buy them. Each man should make his own decision on things that they need/carry.
@BushcraftOnFire My apologies David, I wasnt directing that at you.It was to those that think they need to run out and buy those high dollar knives for it to be a survivla knife,.as you know the old mountian men carried the family butcher knife.
dave canterbury said that mora is junk exept for food prep..he told me that...what do you think...dont think he said junk but he didnt promote it......great vid..
@swampassoutfitters Each man has his opinion on what good tools are. I think that the Mora is a great knife. I got my first Mora from Dave in fact. It has a Rattail tang.. but goes about 3/4 into the handle.. so it is still solid. And they are as sharp as knives come. I love it for carving and subtle work... and wear one as a neck knife when I am in the bush.
Have never used the RTAK.. but it seems like it would be a good knife. I LOVE the Anaconda.. I DON'T like it with the serrations. And honestly.. after what Ontario did to Jeff Randall.. I don't buy from them.
Nice Tag and Knives. My two are simply the Cold Steel SRK Carbon V and the Esee 3. I am not a huge fan of SAK's and folders in the bush, in camp maybe for small tasks and such, but not in the bush. Although any knife with you is better than no knife at all. In camp use, would be a Mora of some sort and a homemade carbon Ulu. I also like the cold steel Trail-Hawk with some mods done to it.
I have several of these knives. Several. My favorite are still my swiss army knife and my Becker BK2. Although my Mora Triflex is quickly coming up to be my main carry. Very good blade and for the cost it is a must have.
I have the BG Gerber. I am a huge Gerber fan. I have the ukltimate survival knife and I cannot find anything to complain about. I have beat it to death and used it for more things than one would use a knife for. It is definitely holding up to Gerbers rep. BG did a great job at the disign. You cannot destroy this knife.
Absolutely not.. I won't use a BG knife.. I LOVE Gerber.. but don't like the BG knife at all.. For starters it has a 1/2 serrated blade.. which to me is useless..
My favorite bushcraft knife is a Elite pup, I cut the blade down to 3 3/4 inch with a dremel tool. It is incredibly solid, and fairly light, as I stripped the sheath down to just the plastic insert. I also have a Mora clipper and the No2, both great knives. I personally prefer a blade between 3-4 inches, never cared much for the larger knives.
Well I have used 2 of them extensively.. The Gerber Multitool.. which I used for more than 10 years and it served me VERY well. Now I have the Surge which I showed in the vid.. I think it's the best available.. that's why I got it... HTH
Negritos and Bolos come from the Philipines. Negritos are cool people and know how to live well in the jungle. The Bolo is made from a car leaf spring and has a handle from a water buffalo horn.
I almost tagged you on a very similar thread going around it was for your 2 favorite fixed blade knives. Like you I had to narrow it down and really think on it. Hope you guys are doing well, and really hope you're getting more rain than we are. It's gone from rain forest to desert here. Last decent rain we got was in January. Since then only a couple of brief showers. You guys take care.
Our high today was 17c today and rain forecast for Friday and Saturday. I have a group on Saturday. Should make fire by friction a bit more of a challenge in a rain storm.
Good to see that you like Mora. The Swede's seem to have generally good bushcraft gear, perhaps not the best, but for the price and the fact that it's quality, their stuff is usually a good buy. I'll pick up another one. Thanks
Excellent knife choices Dave, I think I'm gonna have to give that Anaconda a try sometime when I'll have some extra cash laying around. I've been hearing only positive things about that blade and you rating it as #1 bc knife just topped it off. Thanks for the vid.
LOL! YOU were one of my tag choices.. until I saw that you had already been tagged Bro.. Should have just tagged you again and made you show us different knives.. ROTFL

Nice collection you've got there David, I wasn't surprised by your choice of knife. I think the difference between the US and the UK can be seen by the choice of knives we use for bushcraft, it's not the law that stops us over here. We can own pretty much anything, to carry it without "good reason" is another matter. I'm glad you tagged Mark, he's had some nice knives in his video's, can't wait to see what he narrows his two favorite down to.
"negrito bolo" refers to the negrito tribes in the philippines. Bolo is a common large working knife style in the PI, and it takes on many versions.

What dp you think of the spyderco rock salt as a bushcrafting knife?
Nuggedee 7 months ago
@Nuggedee
I'm not familiar with that knife.. so I can't answer you from experience. I have looked at it and read the specs and it looks like it could be a very usable camp knife. The forward curve on the blade makes for better chopping.
A few things I don't like are the 1/8" width (I prefer 1/4 on a big knife), the weight is too light for chopping, and the H-1 Stainless is poor (IMO) for bigger work as it will easily break. For the $200 MSRP I would stay with my Anaconda or a Hoodlum

good choices, i'm relieved you didn't pick the tracker!
as an aside, i don't think a multi-tool qualifies for the spirit of the question.
interesting choice on the anaconda. what's your opinion of tanto vs the typical drop point?
Urudrim 7 months ago
@Urudrim
I didn't like the Tanto when I first got it.. but It has opened MANY possibilities that the drop can't. It's VERY good as a "scraper"... It's also much stronger than the drop (IMO). I have grown to LOVE the Tanto.. and would definitely choose another one in the future.
If the multitool doesn't count.. even though it has a blade.. then I would go with the SAK Hunter.. followed closely by the Mora.
