This was originally an instrumental composed by RT for the soundtrack of the film 'Sweet Talker'. Tim Finn did indeed write the lyrics (as you mentioned in an earlier post) resulting in this excellent piece.
The video is charming. I bought it a few years back.
Richard and Teddy are wonderful together!
RT's music is in a class of it's own. The lyrics create quirky, fascinating, believable characters that let us see we each have a part of that in us. His music is a unique mix of styles, unusual rhythmes and moods ranging from the sinister to peaceful to high energy.
What a thrill to be able to hear the music and watch RT perform!
*You and I tempted by the promise of a different lie *
This song makes me cry deep sobs of what can never be.. It's just beautiful ..And maybe what can never be is perfect..<3 It's like my heart feels like it weighs a million pounds listening to this song.....If only you could persuade someone of anything???
@ak47doubletap Thank you. Once heard, it will never be lost, because you'll always carry it with you. Wonderful music, will be made, with or without monetary compensation to the person making it. It's innate to our species.
I love this tune. I believe it first appeared as an instrumental on Sweet Talker. This is a great version but as long as you're on youtube, click on the scottish TV 99 version. Astounding.
bomagosh, Ironically enoough joni36 and I posted our videos on the exact same day over two years ago. I posted mine because I wanted people to hear this great song and it wasn't on YT at the time.
I didn't find out about joni36's scottish TV 99 version until sometime later.
BTW I happen to like the live performance video as well!
Just realised why this song reminded me so much of Crowded House songs. Tim Finn, brother of Neil Finn had some input into it. So who actually wrote it , Tim Finn, or Richard Thompson, or both?
More poppier and upbeat. The guitar playing is less intricate compared to his dad but he still writes good songs. His latest album (cant remember the name) is quite good.
@ak47doubletap richard has been relatively unsucessfull in the grand scheme of things for some reason, teddy is well on track to outselling his dad aslong as he keeps making records. Richard is the greatest living songwriter.
great song . i like the video . this song had lots of meaning to me. tried to see what the story behind the song was did not find anything other than they dont tell you what the story behind the song is other than its up too you to interpret i thought it had lot about god in there for me
My favorite version of this is the live take with RT & Teddy on Celtschmerz (possibly the finest RT live album, available only from his web site); but this comes pretty close. I saw them do this live at the Buskirk in Bloomington, IN and it was mesmerizing. If RT comes to your town, go see him!
Thanks for the tip, hurleym65. I heard this live before I heard the recorded version, and much prefer the live. The studio version is overproduced (who decided the light-rock percussion track was a good idea?). Still a lovely song in any case, but I'm glad to hear there's a live version preserved on commercially available recording.
So you're twenty-eight and a fifty-eight year old man is your grandfather? Either them Thompsons is breeding like bunnies or someone's telling tales...
Maybe I'm more disoriented than I'd imagined. Rememberants says these two are his uncle and grandfather, right? The profile Rememberants has on here says he's 28 years old. If he's 28 and RT (age 59) is his grandfather, the either someone is fudging their numbers, the Thompsons breed like bunnies or there's been some complex intermarriage that, at the end of the day, makes me my own grandpa, too. If I'm confused...enlighten me. I'm all for enlightenment...I'd love to be wellorientedseacow.
I agree. Richard, Teddy & Linda are amazing! Is there a video of the two of them singing this? Love the song! And I have to check out Teddy's country venture, sounds wonderful. As I type this song filters through & it's the most beautiful rendition I've heard...just the two of them...wow!!!
