Some of these comments honestly blow my mind. Of course he knew of the going-on's of the Nazi party. It has been recorded in history that he did and insisted on better conditions for the slaves for the soul purpose that they weren't achieving what they needed to do. That is a crime. He moved the Jewish people out of their homes to continue on with the plans of a 'Greater Germany' which in turn assisted with the creation of the Ghetto's. This is a crime. And all of this is written in History.
@incisivecarley Yes you're right, he for sure did know what was going on. But to be fair, he might not have known every detail. That was clearly none of his business.
I also wouldn't call him a devil as others do. He was rather indifferent. The murder of the jews didn't concern him, so he didn't cared. Which is bad enough of course.
Also moving people is one thing, killing people is a whole other thing.
Speer knew of the Holocaust, he knew of concentration camps, he was part of the Nazi ideology. That's a fact. He was not man enough for suicide, he wrote novels (autobiography he called it) where he created the story of the good nazi. Lol.
met Speer when I was a teenager in 1979. I travelled from California to Heidelberg to see him in his house above the town. I spent 5 hours with him, his wife made coffee and Semmeln for us. I was overwhelmed to be in his presence and he was friendly enough, though extremely reserved and a little uptight. We spoke German together since I thought this would be easier for him than English, though he spoke English and French reasonably well.
I would not characterize him as charming. More reseved.
@Ulysses61 I envy you sir for meeting him. I intend to pursue architecture in college and I am a fan of some of his work. I wish I would have met him.
you know i dont think we will ever know how much albert speer knew of the nazi atrocites but one things for sure like many of hitlers followers he wa seduced into think one man could change one nation but all and all i think he knew more than he wanted to say e
Anyone know where this can be purchased on DVD w/Eng.subs in U.S.? Also a really good Ger. movie (Die Gustloff) with Kai Wiesinger& Heiner Lauterbach?
@GermanWarFiles-Outstanding post considering it's length. Thanks much. Every aspect of this film, acting, photography, set, props, continuity and research is 2nd to none. The Director knew his stuff and those who financed it must have spent a bundle considering the quality. The German language injects a force and authenticity to the account of Speer and Hitler that captures our interest early on and will not let go.
@IFreakSlide Define "evil" in your context. Because from what I see and learn Speer is evil in a sense. First of all because he knew the holocaust and everything the Wehrmacht and SS do the so called lesser human being. and second he did not even try to stop it.
When this started and I saw it was a re-enactment I was about to turn it off but I was eating my breakfast and did not want to look for something else.
Had I not been eating, I would have missed this brilliant 15 minutes. The acting is great, the actors look like the people they are playing and the use of memories from the family with real locations is wonderful.
The only observations are that I am not sure of a British officer with an American accent + Bormann looks more like Jaruzelski!
Outstanding. The acting and the research is of the highest order. It addresses all the nagging questions regarding this complicated individual and hints at the truth. That he was culpable and probably should have been executed as Sauckel was.
@funkyalfonso My opinion also. He was very lucky that certain documents did not turn up at Nuremburg. I know two people who knew him and they both talk of his charm.
Thanks for posting this series. I have never seen it but will be watching it all beginning right now. thanks again.
