ERROLL GARNER WAS A BRILLIANT MUSICIAN!! HE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO READ MUSIC, but as unto Art Tatum (who could not read because of blindness), his sense of harmony, improvisational invention, piano technical abilities (the way his hands moved on the keyboard were like sea waves) and rhythm, seemed as second nature with him. I'm sure he worked very hard to reach his pinnacle, but the inborn talent was there!
I remember my first Garner lp, there were these odd noises in the music, thought there was something wrong with the recording. Nope, just Erroll enjoying himself.
Whatever life throws be it trouble or heartache Errol Garner's music and his obvious joy when playing has brought a ray of sunshine into the bluest of days. I hear him first in 1957 at the Town Tavern, Young Street, Toronto. Nearly 80 now and I'm still listening.
I can identify "When your lover has gone", "One note Samba". "On the Street where you live" and "All the things you are" What are the titles of the other two items please?
hey, i respect your opinion but don't joke please.. garner -that i love, like you- can't be compared with bill evans or keith jarrett, for exemple..jazz is not only technique but also feeling, introspection and innovation...
great rendition but miles'version has something special..and, however, of this french tune -"les feuilles mortes" (written by Jacques Prevert and revisited in english by the great johnny mercer), i continue to prefer the vocal reading of yves montand, bye.
not only have I been listening to jazz piano players for 55 years, I have also been playing jazz piano for 55 years ... yes, I have listened to a lot of jazz. Garner is the only jazz pianist I've seen who is having fun playing the piano -- all the others I have seen are working at it ... they're not having fun.
if you spend enough time on a musical instrument you know exactly where things are, and it's also as though your fingers "remember" reflexively what to do.
This Charmer just pours handfuls of happiness on the public. Can't imagine him dead and buried - hop! and he is here playing his medley smiling seductively...
More you listen Erroll, more u start to like him. His style is so addictive.... i really cant stop listening him, really....SOMEBODY HELP ME I CANNNNNT STOP LISTENING ERROLL GARNER. ^_^
the second track is called "one note samba" and u can search in suide 62, of Erroll's stuff, just type "one note samba" in search bar. or u can chek soulseek for audio/video records, there are alot of jazz music over there.
Woosh! I'm actually all into classical music, a string quartet fanatic, other chambre music, and style from baroque to really contemporary, but this ... is heaven on earth - I just don't get it! How does he do it - what a gifted man. And why till now I only knew him as the man of "Misty" and never sat down to listen to him playing ...
Aaaaahh! Those were the days. You could go into a boozer in London and hear some old boy trying to play in the master's style..Of course he wasn't in the same class but he was trying and the music was around and ..why is everything so shit today!!!
Errol Garner and Art Tatum have always been my favourite pianists since I was a kid. jenny6664 I agree with everything you say about Erroll, and you're right no-one can ever replace him. Maybe someone else will come along who is a creative and lovely player like Art and Errol were, but in different ways. Who knows...?
you've posted a lot of great vids so i hate to be critical, but if you have complete performances, why would you chop them up this way? and this is not a medley. again, sorry to carp.
I have spent the last three hours just watching Erroll Garner clips. I think if you heard every album he ever recorded, you would NEVER hear the same song played twice or more and have it sound like the first one! What an amazing person. We truly lost a wonderful genius when we lost Erroll. NO ONE can ever replace him, no matter how good they are. He was just totally wonderful and amazing!
It is a medley the one and only refers to Errol. Not bad for a guy who couldn't read music or never had a lesson. Pure genius. I have a number of CD from remastered recordings featuring him.
just discovered erroll tonight, happy days, his narration is amazing

Do you mean that Garner doesn't have feeling, introspection, innovation ? I'm afraid you'll be the only one to think that....

Me too. I think when you factor in his percussive ability, he is the best piano player in any genre including classical.
