"pimp" up a military vehicle? why? the jeep is a great vehicle as it is, designed for a certain job and does it very well. when you try and photograph HUD o/p on a collimator, that's the typical image you see. it would be better, if the CRT signal were tapped and stored directly. However, that would be "cheating", or pimping it up, as you put it. That wasn't the idea of this exercise.
the jeep looks like a toy to me and I find the F-16 HUD much more sophisticated and even the one that they have installed on the JF 17 (French version used on the Rafael) is much more eye catching. I believe Sukhois have better ones if not then they ve got to do something about it. Just look at the way it zeros in. I am not trying to defame or make fun of it but it is what it is. The Jeep is just that - it's a Jeep, much like the original CJ3. It is simple, rugged and gets the job done. It's far from being a toy - you have to own and drive one to know what it is. Where exactly did you see a HUD capture in this video? Are you referring to the HDD (head-down display) with the cross hair at the centre, during the bombing display?

You can call it what you want - that is NOT a HUD. The HUD stands for "Head Up" display, not "Heads up" display. HUD is not a video image - it's a set of symbols projected through a CRT onto the canopy, monochrome, usually green. Flyer looks through collimator. The actual symbols depends on sensors and pods specific to that aircraft type, bare minimum there's artificial horizon, gun sight, angle of attack indication. Wow, you mistake an HDD image for a HUD, and proceed to critique a war game!
I dont wanna talk big about the PAF but just compare this video with that of safron bandit one and yull know what I mean. If PAF can do such an exercise than why cant IAF do something as per that standard?
I didn't see a material difference, except that the Indian exercise had dedicated strike aircraft, where the pakistani exercise had multi-role combat aircarft. My friend - I have DESIGNED HUDs, amongst other things. It's fundamentally a simple technology. I'm *not* being cheeky with you, but I'd have expected that someone who feels competent commenting on aero-exercises would know their HUDs from their HDDs. Rafale (not Rafael) uses full glass-cockpit instruments, so, I'm not sure how they'd have incorporated just the HUD from it, but it's do-able. I had heard that Pakistan had developed their own, but if it's from the Rafale, probably BAE supplied.

In the presentation that we got the Pakistanis did not mention anything regarding making it only its importance and how they will counter the superior indian Sukhois with the JF 17s and the J-10. Their only worry was the ELINT and COMINT in the awacs and their efforts to counter it.
EVERY Indian combat aircraft is equipped with HUDs. Either vendor supplied, or if retrofit, from Elbit or local designs. You didn't see it on the TV, doesn't mean it wasn't used. HUD is relatively trivial, I'd have thought the Chinese would have given to Pakistan already. No comments on ELINT and COMINT. JF17 and J10s can't take on SU-30, but skilled pilots in F16s might. JF 17 will be adequate for Mig21s (same engine, similar airframes, similar weapons, electronics and tactics).

@SabertoothEversoris: Bro, it was unusual to see IAF taking on USAF. i only said that they can make it in a Habit of defeating F-16s on regular basis. it needs a lot of tactical training and IAF is Capable of doing that. but when it comes to maneuvering the jet without TV, IAF lacks, this may be coz Mig-21 is not so maneuverable as an F-16 or Super hornet. and mind u, India can never achieve anything by politics, u know why, coz our leadership lacks the will. The only option is surgical strikes

I met a soldier in a train traveling from dehradun, he was a participant in kargil. he told me that the entire Grenadier were upset by the decision of not Crossing the LOC & cutting of Supply lines from Islamabad so that we could have lost less lives but the decision was never taken by the Govt. we lost 675 Brave warriors. even Israel was in full support to attack their nuclear capabilities that time.

BTW the same airfoce (with MIG21s, yes) were able to take on an attacking American force of F15s in simulated war games (albeit asymmetrical). So, Indonesian airforce., I'll urge you to revisit that assumption. Pakistani and Chinese forces are very professional, I do have a lot of respect for them. Cheers.

"pimp" up a military vehicle? why? the jeep is a great vehicle as it is, designed for a certain job and does it very well. when you try and photograph HUD o/p on a collimator, that's the typical image you see. it would be better, if the CRT signal were tapped and stored directly. However, that would be "cheating", or pimping it up, as you put it. That wasn't the idea of this exercise.

the jeep looks like a toy to me and I find the F-16 HUD much more sophisticated and even the one that they have installed on the JF 17 (French version used on the Rafael) is much more eye catching. I believe Sukhois have better ones if not then they ve got to do something about it. Just look at the way it zeros in. I am not trying to defame or make fun of it but it is what it is. You may not like it but it is the truth .

The Jeep is just that - it's a Jeep, much like the original CJ3. It is simple, rugged and gets the job done. It's far from being a toy - you have to own and drive one to know what it is. Where exactly did you see a HUD capture in this video? Are you referring to the HDD (head-down display) with the cross hair at the centre, during the bombing display?

You can call it what you want - that is NOT a HUD. The HUD stands for "Head Up" display, not "Heads up" display. HUD is not a video image - it's a set of symbols projected through a CRT onto the canopy, monochrome, usually green. Flyer looks through collimator. The actual symbols depends on sensors and pods specific to that aircraft type, bare minimum there's artificial horizon, gun sight, angle of attack indication. Wow, you mistake an HDD image for a HUD, and proceed to critique a war game!

I didn't see a material difference, except that the Indian exercise had dedicated strike aircraft, where the pakistani exercise had multi-role combat aircarft. I do respect your admiration for your own country's efforts (and I respect the Paksitani forces abilities too). What weirds me out is the almost obsessive relativism, to feel good _only_when_ you are able to trash someone else.

And you feel capable enough to comment and judge "resources committed" to it? Do you know how many sorties were carried out? Would you know how many aircraft participated, or the tonnage of munitions deployed? The public is largely aware of both limitations and strengths. Any one can file an application under RTI act in India, and defense ministry will provide that information. So, if you think we get all our information from television, please be aware that we are not Americans.

My friend - I have DESIGNED HUDs, amongst other things. It's fundamentally a simple technology. I'm *not* being cheeky with you, but I'd have expected that someone who feels competent commenting on aero-exercises would know their HUDs from their HDDs. Rafale (not Rafael) uses full glass-cockpit instruments, so, I'm not sure how they'd have incorporated just the HUD from it, but it's do-able. I had heard that Pakistan had developed their own, but if it's from the Rafale, probably BAE supplied.

As I had pointed out - there are well defined mechanisms for obtaining information. So, the media, if anything, gave it very little air-time. They probably had some scandal involving a politician to report on.

It is good to know that you designed these things and maybe you will be in a position to tell your folks the significance of it as well. In the presentation that we got the Pakistanis did not mention anything regarding making it only its importance and how they will counter the superior indian Sukhois with the JF 17s and the J-10. Their only worry was the ELINT and COMINT in the awacs and their efforts to counter it.

EVERY Indian combat aircraft is equipped with HUDs. Either vendor supplied, or if retrofit, from Elbit or local designs. You didn't see it on the TV, doesn't mean it wasn't used. HUD is relatively trivial, I'd have thought the Chinese would have given to Pakistan already. No comments on ELINT and COMINT. JF17 and J10s can't take on SU-30, but skilled pilots in F16s might. JF 17 will be adequate for Mig21s (same engine, similar airframes, similar weapons, electronics and tactics).
