As an inner-city person who lived in East Cleveland for 15 yrs. AFTER it changed, i can tell you there is just one reason why middle class blacks and whites left...not racism, not crack--CRIME. folks got tired of being beat up and robbed by fatherless thugs. Until the black family is restored
this will not change. Both political parties do NOTHING to rebuild the back family to where it was before welfare began in 1965. And Bill Cosby is right, we inner-city folks did this, whitey didn't.
I started my career working out of E. Cleveland in 1967, it was still predominately white and the majority of the people kept their homes in good condition, then the movement of blacks from the inner city to the outer city turned E Cleveland into a Ghetto, and you cannot blame the white man for what the blacks turned E Cleveland into.
I seen E Cleveland going to the dogs in less than 3 years, yes less than 3 years I was there working for the phone company.
We moved to East Cleve back in spring 2010, looking for a way out of here but we are still here.... One thing I'd like to add. It is a lot like your video but 2 years poorer, and in those 2 years most of what you video'ed is gone or in lesser condition. East Cleve is a bad place more so for the corrupt city government that runs it. I feel sympathetic for the families who don't make it out of here.
Cleveland was once a grand place to live.Look at those once gorgeous homes, destroyed, neighborhoods gone, industry gone. The house I grew up in,bulldozed as is my grandmother's and cousins' homes.Friends I went to school with, their homes are gone also.School I went to....gone!!! And the cancer continues to spread to the east, south and west of Cleveland.Any guesses as to what and who caused this???????
hey man , are you going to make another video going deeper into east cleveland? also, any positive news for the city in terms of being cleaned up? some of those boarded up buildings looked real rough and you could tell by the graffiti that the gangs were probably selling drugs out of them. i can only hope things will get better for the midwest but when crack is the biggest money maker in your city, things don't look too positive all the time. thanks 4 the vid.
i'm from chicago i watched this video and it's very sad for cleveland. it's like this on the west side of chicago and start to like that on some of the southside of chicago
Greetings from Cleveland. Those houses are nothing if you go down to Shaker Heights or southern Cleveland Heights the houses get "big" for example my house is about 3950 square feet. I go to California all the time and never see a house over 2500 square feet. And if they are that large than their like a bajillion dollars
Probably years and years ago..this neighborhood was like for the very "well-to-do!!" Once upon a time..right? I grew up visiting Cleveland..but, I was born in Buffalo,New York and raised in Northern California...I would visit MY grandparents out in Cleveland..I still visit ..but, not as much as before..but, I still appreciate those beautiful homes..even if the neighborhoods have gone to shit..the houses are charming all the same!!
Born and raised in East Cleveland a 80's baby (81) Penrose Brightwood 125th in superior mainly that whole back side is my home knew everybody from crack heads to the guys that was getting money frist time I got into trouble with the law I did 3 in a half years came home seem what was happening and the outcome of my life if I would have stayed but soon as I could I left moved to Chicago (no better just more people) and been here for 11 years now I have family there and want to come back but to w
too bad the neighborhood sucks I alway thought that about the Eastside I don't think anyone should have to live like that there are white people there too
Our family lived their from 1934 until 1960 - it was a great neighborhood then. Then it changed & the new residents did it to themselves and then they cry. It wasn't like that when they moved in so why did it turn like that----they destroyed it...The residents of East Cleveland need to take the responsibility for what THEY did to THEIR community. Instead of doing drugs & drinking-spend the money on your house & property
The people that live there are the ones that destroyed it. They should be the ones that rebuild it. And I'm pretty sure that everybody knows what kind of people live there. If you don't want boarded up houses, then tell your boys to go to school to learn, to get jobs, and work their asses off.
... rent in the city? Any link there? I don't want to think of the city... perhaps the situation is the problem. I definitely wouldn't blame black people for the impoverished state of the city either. I don't know how long the demographics have been such, but I'm willing to bet some irresponsible white community slowly up and left (to the suburbs... no less...). I think the joke's on them though, there is so much more potential in EC... ahhh... I could write a book...
I hate when stuff is "black" or "white", but it's been said that EC is a black community. I don't think you'll find much argument against that. Any case, this is about the video. I sympathize w/ the makers and wish there were things I could do. Black, white, green or purple nobody should have to live in homes w/o windows...err, glass in the windows... I particularly like the comment about humanity knowing more about the ocean than EC. Point of interest, anybody know how many ppl own vs...
Most people from Cleveland and the surronding areas know you do not drive through East Cleveland at anytime during night or day. My sister's car ran out of gas in EC and the cops picked her up and asked her if she was crazy..that they avoid that they avoid EC. My father, who is first generation italian grew up in EC and said it was nice then. I have never ever driven to EC, it is just something we knew not to do..sad so many cities have their East Clevelands.
@OperatorTime08 Ummm I am white and I live here..... what, you got to be a black person to have a hard life? My husband and I both went to college, so assuming that if you go to college you won't have to live in a hard neighborhood is pure ignorance.
EC isn't too bad during the day, but you really don't want to be here for too long after the sun goes down. When the night sky appears it's best to treat stop signs and stop lights like suggestions, not something you have to do.
You're right it was. I remember the houses in the latter part of the video when i was growing up. these were some pretty affluent homes.
it's no mystery what happened though. same thing with every other community like east cleveland across the country, CRACK. I saw the transition from middle class to third worldish after crack was introduced to the community! the video is a good documentation b/c i don't think this east cleveland will exist in the next 10 years..
This video breaks my heart. As you said, no one should have to live like that. I was born in East Cleveland in 1958, and it was a beautiful community. So much is gone now that I knew. I can only hope that something can be done to revitalize the neighborhoods, and get people back to work.

Black people don't have to live like this, they are able to go to college for free. They stay there by their own choosing.
They just want more excuses for a free ride.
