Ever heard of a float n' fly? Happens to be one of the best ways to catch big bass in cold, clear water. Try telling one of those "fudgepackers" to "take the bobber off"

Why do people go to all the trouble and time to set up a beautiful tank like that, and yet to ZERO research on it's maintenance.

Your filtration media acts as a holding space for what's referred to as "beneficial bacteria."

This bacteria turns the ammonia from the fish's urine into nitrites, which then become nitrates... which are a toxin that's removed via partial water changes every week or so.

By "partial," I mean 10-40% of the water exchanged with fresh.

@RamAirIndustries When ALL the water is removed, the beneficial bacteria is therefore compromised, causing your tank to go into a "cycling" process all over again (usually takes a month or so).

In the meantime, your fish, unbeknownst to you, are going through tremendous stress due to the now elevated ammonia content.

In short: Never, EVER take all the water out of your tank.

Once it's cycled, it's a natural balance that needs not be interrupted.

Google "Aquarium cycling." ;-)
