i skate alot...street pools vert everything...i have a real sense of how a board feels under my feet...will it be easier for me to learn to surf than a person that doesnt...????will i learn faster?? just wondering...i thinking of picking it up..been pushing wood for like 7 years...now im 19..
honestly dude i longboard skateboard, freestyle skateboard, blade, ski, snowboard, so i have a good sense of balance, and i tried surfing it might a help just a bit, but its still fuckin hard, lol
I am suffering from bad habits and trying to overcome them...I think this video was pretty helpful...fortunately for me I am a longboarder so I have room to push off with my toes...I could see how it would be hard for a shorty not to want to go to their knees first...another tip...run the steps through your head as you are paddling into the wave...otherwise you tend to go back to bad habits
yeah don't put yer hands on the rail cuz if its not waxed once you push off they'll slip right off and you will hit yer face on the board. which hurts pretty bad
First of all, don't put your hands on the rail. It's much easier to lose balance this way. Instead, put your hands each 1/2 way from each rail to the center of the board. Your hands can either be inverted (facing in, tougher) or facing the front with a slight tilt towards the rail
Also, when pushing yourself up, don't go straight up. Kill two birds with one stone and push your hands "up and out" when lifting. Don't come straight up and stand.
Keeping your hands off the rail really focuses your center of gravity. With practice, it becomes natural for some people to put their hands facing inward on the board on the lift. In a way it directs your energy towards the center of the board.
There is also another way to pop up on a longboard that will position you further back on the board which is good for riding steeper/faster waves where you need to begin a sharp turn immediately after poping up. Watch Joel Tudor vids for demos of this technique.
so i need some help... im a beginner surfer, i surf newports beginner breaks like the pier on a fiberglass board, whenever i surf i am rly good at the beginning but then my feet start hurting rly bad from like hitting the board when i popup or something.. how do i stop this without having to buy booties?
I'm glad that he is not showing a step-up technique (as many surf schools do for beginners), but using your toes to push off the board is a bad habit to start. When you advance to a shortboard, you will not have the board at your toes to push off. If you are in reasonable shape, you should be able to do this properly even from the start.
great vid ive been looking into getting a board and trying this out but am a total noob. how much for an moderate board nothing real fancy just a kool decent board?
Good job, very well said. I like how you explained in detail and said to not get to the knees cause I see soooo many people out there getting to their knees and say they learned that way in Waikiki... lol yikes...
i'm just learning how to surf myself, im just about 5'8 and i got a 6'6 dual-fin retro fish for my first board. hopefully in some amount of months ill get this pop up correct and catch a wave
longboard is the best for learning, it will be much sturdier and easier to ride so you learn how to stand and stuff first, then as you progress you can get a shorter board and start to learn tricks and stuff, have fun out there
i've seen people use the knee first thing and they do fine, they just bring it far into the centre to keep the weight there. having said that, i do think straight up is better if you can do it.
I did it the wrong way on Sunday.. my knees are swollen and raw right now :/

or just wax your rails.....

He's talking about bad habits and the video starts with him grabbing the rails ? This is a definate no no resulting in a very unstable pop up !

If you're trying to learn don't watch this kook.

right foot is way off you missed the x spots
youre knee technique is totally wrong
i have taught over 5000 people to surf using
4 stand up techniques the pop up only 8% of students can do properly..what are you going to do if a 195lb guy that cant pop up do?
i will post a video of those techniques this week for you to see and demonstarte them on land on on the water....

I've seen different people suggesting different places to put your hands when you pop up.
Should you grab the rails of the board when you push yourself up, or do it as he does, place your hands on top of the board and the push up?
