Finally someone speaking not just the truth but the hard truth. People are poor for a reason, because they don't have jobs or are spending their money on expensive useless things (drugs). Yes there is the occasional "the plant shut down and I'm between jobs" which is who should be taking advantage of our welfare programs, not the lazy bums who don't even make an effort to make an honest dollar. What happened to rugged individualism??
Im just happy that someone has some since if you take people off welfare that saves us money guess who pays for perfectly good working people that are to lazy to fine a job... YOU!!!

Who are these rich people that "work hard"? Assholes like Gingrich equate making millions with "working"
The banks commit egregious crimes and their "punishment" is they're given millions MORE in FREE MONEY! And the American people pick up the tab!
The biggest welfare cheats in America are the TOP 0.01%! They have NEVER worked a day in their lives! Not only do they receive their money without ever having to work, but they're rewarded when they commit egregious crimes! THIS SHIT HAS TO END!
@HNK222: You attain money three ways 1) You inherit it 2) Earn it 3) steal it from others that have money. (This can be Government taking money and distribute it out to people who don't earn it.)
You just don't work hard to earn...you risk to earn as well.
If someone who gables their house in black or red in roulette in vegas...The risk is big ...losing a house, but if he wins it big money! Thats not really working hard but dam not alot of people would do it!
@HNK222 Ppl allow the rich to do what they want cause they think that somewhere in their life they will get excepted to the rich club and they will want the same favor as the rich...Theres a old saying by the rich...I can pay half the poor to kill the other half
I know what he is trying to say (studied soc and psyc in college). However, the countries concern isn't about whether or not children can find work. It is about CREATING JOBS IN AMERICA.
@Economics2014 ..ssshhhh....u might make ppl see that its bush 2004 all over again..side skirting the real issues and blaming gay ppl and mexicans for americas problems...getting re elected by the bible belt south and southwest and then promptly starting a war for oil...
@CHEKPNT I believe he's speaking about the sudden, bizarre misconception that people who are poor in this country are poor purely because they choose not to work. This is absurd. The working poor are the people who work full time jobs (or even several of them) but cannot make ends meet. Try to live on minimum wage. Try to raise a family on it. I volunteer at a homeless shelter, and half of the people who stay with us have jobs. Can you imagine that?
@InformationPollution : He is talking about their environment. He recognizes they don't have the opportunities like most of us have. If your grandparents and/or parents depended on the government for mostly everything such as jobs, food, health, school, etc... they in someway have become institutionalize on that dependents and very hard to get out of that dependency. This is not even taking in consideration the cultural such as gangs, drugs, etc.
@CHEKPNT He knows nothing about their environment. They say "they have no one around them who work." People in the projects work. They work incredibly shitty jobs that keep them away from their children, in fact. When I was a kid my mother could drop me off and pick me up from school because she worked part time. In the inner city you see nine year olds riding the bus. They're not doing that because their parents have all the time in the world. I see what you're saying but the poor WORK.
@InformationPollution : Now if your talking about not understanding the projects way of life...yes pretty sure Newt would not understand like...you gotta hustle to survive. I had to hustle myself when I was younger.
But,you don't need to live in the projects to understand the projects problems to find solutions. Now when my kids do become teenagers, am pretty sure they'll think i don't know whats-Up but I know in my opinion, what I need to do for them to succeed in life.
This said from a person from a part a society that gets everything handed to them in a silver spoon on a golden platter held with ruby gloves, the rich are the ones with no habits.
I was once a really poor kid... I tried hard in school, received scholarships to go to college, worked throughout college, and currently have a pretty nice job.
Newt Gingrich: endless sexual scandals; 84 ethics charges while speaker of the House; $300,000 fine for corruption--the largest fine in the history of the House; four times had to admit that he falsified info to the Ethics Committee; refused to pay child support for yrs; took money from 2 charities for poor inner-city kids for his personal use; left the House $5,000,000 richer. Venal, stupid, & totally corrupt: he is the perfect Republican candidate for the most prestigious office on earth
@CHEKPNT What I'm saying is that Newt is a classic Republican: a corrupt, lying pile of shit, totally lacking in compassion for ordinary ppl, a slime-ball that has entered politics not to serve the public but to get rich selling his soul to the highest bidder. That he denies being a low-life crook doesn't change that he was found guilty of 84 ethics violations while the Speaker of the House and fined $300,000, nor does it change the fact that he continues scamming while running for president.
@Jack194343 You're Misinformed about David Bonior that brought 75 ethics charges against Newt, 74 which were found to have no merit whatsoever. The last charge, whether Newt funded his college class "Renewing American Civilization" properly the charge was two fold: violated tax deductible and improper tax filing considered "error" Cost him $300k. IRS announced on February 3, 1999, that it found NO IMPROPRIETIES IN THE TAX FILINGS wow that's corrupt, lying, no compassion, slime ball? gzz lol
@CHEKPNT LIES, LIES, LIES, LIES, AND MORE LIES. Newt Gingrich himself said it best. "Anyone who quotes me, is telling a lie." If a Republican said it, you can be sure it was a lie, therefore if you quote a Republican you are passing on a LIE. FACT: Newt was tried, found guilty, and fined $300,000. Your SPIN on that FACT is a LIE. I'd like to point out that the Republicans had control of the Congress at that time. Newt was tried and found guilty by his own cronies. It wasn't the DEMs.
@Jack194343 Now you sound more like a kid. Your misdirecting the issue by name calling , assumptions, no matter how much you can repeat the word guilty and fined over and over...you never explained what it was for I doubt you knew anything more than that. Your almost in the same category as people who really thinks 911 was a government insider job....
Yes that why he was the speaker during Bill Clinton's era which was a good economic period...lol Stick to the issue and explain yourself...lol
@CHEKPNT Ok, you have convinced me:Newt is Mother Theresa in drag. Why would I doubt you?If he wins the election, think of the prestige he will bring to the office of President, think how much more the world will respect the USA because we elected a shyster to the highest office on earth. But let's not loose track of what is important here. We should keep our eye on the ball and our true priorities: think of how many more books Newt will sell and how much more the lobbiest will pay him. Wow!
@Jack194343 Asking the world to have respect for us b-cuz of who's president is like asking Boston Celtics fans to like us because of a certain Laker players lol...
Newt making money legally...I got no beef. Have you seen 60 mins lately alot of those politician are making money by insider trading! Ever heard of Solydra, Jeffrey Immelt GE ceo head of Obama Job council who moved his factory making x-rays to China ...oops we can't say anything bad about Obama....sorry I better stop.
This all goes back to the brilliant Republican idea that if you're a rich person it's because you worked very hard for it. But if you're a poor person it's your own fault because you're a lazy layabout who's looking for a government handout.
this Guy is a Total Shit head,i was that so Called poor kid that was Lifting 60 pound Buckets of Wet Cement 8-12 hrs a Day when i was 12, and at age 14-17 Worked unloading 70 TO 100 Pound Rock Salt Soaked Cow hides all day that would eat through 8 pairs of gloves a Day and your hands would still blister with pain and lied my age to get the Job to help put Food on the Table, the poor Work Harder than Most People could bare, this Fat piece of shit Knows Shit About the Poor Man work ethic.
what a fcking @sshole you were thrown out of government due to the fact that you had no ethics and dont' think we have forgotten nor forgiven. You may think you have the nomination but I can't wait for that smirk gets wiped off you face when you are the looser you have always been your just the flavor of the week but never will become president you dont' have what it takes no matter what your worthless no moral compass whatsoever can't wait to see Obama walk right over your @ss landslide victory
@kali4niadazed this is what corporate america thinks about americans..that we are stupid with the attention span of rabbit pulse....they have figured it out..PPL that know about Newt are close to 40..the rest are dead or are so disinfranchised and dont vote any way...
@stevefromPA2 wow...that's how Steve Jobs, Starbucks, IN n Out, Jamba Juice, L.A. Fitness, Disneyland, Paramount Pictures, Wynn Casino in Las Vegas,Outback Restaurant, etc think of us? stupid, attention span of rabbit pulse? I hope not...or I gotta live somewhere isolated.
I see many of the comments here and it really bugs me. The idea of putting a kid to work isn't an alien one. I used to do yard work as a kid. Not much of it because I didn't like it and that's actually the point. The reason my kids are made to was dishes each day is for two reasons. 1. They will always have that skill and 2. They will NEVER want to make a living as a dishwasher. Seriously people. Get you heads out of your ass! This isn't factory work where kids get dead or a limb los
2.Not all people are poor because they lack morality or are lazy
3. Rich kids are more likely to become lazy, but it's less obvious because they can STILL afford university and end up being lazy lawyers instead of lazy drug dealers
4. Newt is suggesting this because he wants to bust up public sector trade unions, not because he gives a shit about teaching kids work ethics
While I don't TOTALLY disagree with Newt, if he is so worried about work habits, he should've tailored his message to fit both poor AND rich kids. I've known some wealthy brats who didn't even know how to wipe their asses, let alone do much else. Anywho, when I first saw this story on TV, I thought, "Left up to this jerk, America would go back to the days of having adults AND under-aged kids work 16 or 18 hours a day without so much as a second to eat or take a piss."
That's the 'elephant' in the room! One third of Americans are living in poverty, and most of them are working their asses off with three part time jobs.
If ANYBODY is setting a bad example for kids, it's the 1% gang.
That's Goldman Sachs traders who made money selling crap CDOs to their own clients and then made MORE money shorting them knowing they were crap.
That's the Newt Gingrich's who made $20 000/hour by renting political corruption on K Street in Washington.
Child labor isn't the same of 15+ year olds working. We already allow those teens to work. And I am willing to bet those teens' parents are not in the top 10%. Child labor is allowing children under 13 to work. That's your solution Newt. Really?
@1baddadd I know what ur saying and I feel too that they would wipe them off the planet..but their delima ..who would work for pennies? whos gonna spend all of their money trying to impress others that they have money, susquently making the rich richer..Also u need poor ppl to sustain the justice system...no lawyers and jails with customers...
CLASS WARFARE & CHILD ABUSE YOU MORON TAKING US BACK TO BARNEY RUBBLE ACUTALLY YOU LOOK LIKE BARNEY RUBBLE WHERE IS YOUR WILMA WITH THE BIG FREAKING EYES DID THEY SEW THEM OPEN?
"Make some slight provisions for the poor and destitute at Christmas? Are there no workhouses? Are there no prisons?" --Ebenezer Gingrich (aka The Gingrich that Stole Christmas)
I don’t see any of these GOP contenders beating Obama next year. Paul supports states legalizing Heroin, Newt, the serial adulterer,& thinks the poor cant aspire. Cain didnt know China has had nuclear weapons for almost 50 yrs. Bachmann wants people Armed & Dangerous, Romney is lying in his adds, Santorum wants Muslims profiled, Perry cant remember what some staff clerk wrote down for him on what to cut. The GOP should just sit 2102 out, save their money and prime a SOLID candidate for 2016.
That's because the message is wrong, and you proved it. You developed a work ethic despite being poor.
There are plenty of poor kids who don't learn work ethics.
There are also plenty of middle class and rich kids who don't learn work ethics.
There is no correlation between economic status and work ethics.
This is a common trick among conservatives to claim that all people who are poor are poor because they're lazy and useless, thus deserving CONTEMPT rather than help.
I learned work ethic because my grandmother died and I couldn't live in her basement anymore.
Considering the amount of time I spent in welfare offices as a child these people are there because they are lazy.
Went to pick up weed at my local medical marijuana dispensary the other day and forgot they are always out of the good smoke on the first because it's WELFARE DAY.
From the amount of black people there you would think it was a popeyes.
@TrollBuster9090 said, "This is a common trick among conservatives to claim that all people who are poor are poor because they're lazy and useless, thus deserving CONTEMPT rather than help."
BINGO! Personally speaking, I'm not that wealthy b/c I've never been interested in fking ppl over to make a dollar that I can't take with me when I die. I'm neither lazy nor financially/materialistically ambitious.
Not only that, but there are plenty of people who work their asses off for minimum wage. Working 65 hours a week for minimum wage, you still wouldn't take home even $20K per year. Anybody you would have the morality to work 65 hours a week washing dishes for $20K a year, rather than becoming a criminal (or a "historian") deserves a sainthood. And a LOT of the working poor do exactly like that. Expecially the Hispanics, another group the GOP like to villify.
Not like really rich kids who usually get everything handed to them. I was a really poor kid and I had my first job at 13, and before that I would rake leaves or mow lawns.
Ignoring the blatant classism in Gingrich's comments for a moment, it sounds like the kinds of jobs that Newt wants kids to do don't exist. Libraries are so strapped for cash they just don't have the money to pay kids. It's also wrong to hire a kid to greet people when there are adults who need jobs more. Gingrich just doesn't seem to know how the real world works sometimes.
I think what he's trying to say is that poor kids should turn away from crack dealers as role models, and get honest jobs on K Street as political lobbyists or CDO derivatives traders on Wall Street. (ie-white collar crooks never go to jail, other than Jack Abramoff I guess.)
All these lazy-ass poor kids should just pull their socks up and become $20 000/hour "Historians" for Freddy Mac! Problem solved! What's the matter with these people?
I believe he is speaking of the millions of children who have NEVER seen a parent work. Just generation after generation of poor people living off of the government. That teaches those children absolutely NOTHING. I agree with his stance on this.
@ultrablackjoker No not really, lets children work up to 10 hours or so is not a bad thing. Most could work at home, some would need others to employ them, all child labor is not bad.
Its difficult to tell from this short snippet, but is Gingrich not making a case for a Federal jobs program here? Wouldn't that be a progressive policy, a policy for full employment? It sounds like the same type of "employer of last resort" and labour-sharing programs that you see in Germany or Austria.
Tone and stereotyping aside, shouldn't TPMTV be concentrating on this side of the message? Has Newt called for Federal jobs programs before?
No, not when the actual intent of the program is to bust up public sector trade unions (who donate heavily to the Democratic party) by replacing most of them with part time kids.
Dressing it up as a federal program to help poor kids is spin doctoring it for moderates, and saying it's necessary because poor black kids are lazy scumbags and embryonic criminals is spin doctoring it for the Tea Party.
Of course you are right about Newt's intent. But we should still separate the idea from its source. That was the intent of my comment. A federal employer of last resort program designed to be complimentary, not to replace other workers, would provide for the sort of stabilizing floor to the abyss the American economy is hurtling through.
Check out the Centre for Full Employment and Price Stability, they have some good info on what it could look like.
@OgallalaKnowhow your correct...I think most people hearing it from a guy like him, a conservative, white, old, republican... are automatically taking it the wrong way. As if he's insulting the poor but actually there is no difference of what he's saying form what most liberal such as Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, etc...been saying for many years.
@OgallalaKnowhow I believe he is talking about encouraging institutions to hire children. In another clip I saw him saying it would be wonderful if public schools fired "some unionized janitors" and instead hired their own students to do maintenance work.
@OgallalaKnowhow No..hes saying poor kids arent going any where and they might as well do janitorial work....Can u imagine the mental issues of a child that has to clean another kids shit and then sit in class next to them?...If u look further on utube u can hear his entire speech...really sickening to the avg person..but then the avg person doesnt have a 500K tab at tiffanys, like Newt...I remember Newt from the 90s..I was wondering when he was going to show up...
You are missing my point. I don't give a s**t what Newt thinks. I remember him leaving congress in disgrace in 1998 as well. My only point is that there is nothing principally wrong with a federal "employer of last resort" jobs program. If you wanted to work, there would be work available. Germany has some of the best examples of this kind of stuff.
@stevefromPA2 : wow you are sooo misleading. Its like if the great Steve jobs offered you a job you'd tell someone he was trying make you his slave... You just insulted all janitors gzz you sound like an elitist.
@CHEKPNT No ur out of touch if ur comparing Steve jobs to Newt Gigngrich and some of the smartest ppl in the world would be honored to work at Apple...I dont know anyone thats lining up to want to clean shit..and yeah..ur overlooking the mental and emotional issues of a child working in the school he attends...It doenst happen and it wont happen for physcological reasons...Put kids to work do manual labor...this isnt 1912...
@stevefromPA2 Why dosent Newt dontate some of the 40million hes made lobbying congress to after school programs if hes so concerned about kids...afterschool programs have been proven benificial for children and the community...child labor doesnt do anythin for the development of a child..thats why its illegal...And ur delusional to think any one who opposes Newts solution is elitist...Only a Elitist person would even think of having kids cleaning shit...
@stevefromPA2 Since your an elitist..I figure you wouldn't know anyone who would want to clean shit... Ok Sigmund Freud,so your an expert & can find conclusive evidence of psychological impact on kids working...hmm.
Your right this isn't 1912! In 1975 the Child Protection Act and other laws became law that protects kid now lol gzzz
Yes Newt, the problem with our country and economy is that 11 year olds have no habit of holding down a job. They are too busy being lazy and being a freaking kid! Btw, Newt, where's the money going to come from to hire all of these kids? If schools & libraries have this money then why not hire more adults? This guy is an idiot. "newt is a dumb person's idea of a smart person." -Krugman
Oh yeah cause rich kids love to work. They are willing to work two or three jobs fresh out of High school to support there mom who has no health care. This is what makes me furious about Republicans and these fictions that they tell everybody about people who's lives they have no idea about. What low income person would ever find this guy appealing. Tell him to show one statisitc to back that up and he would choke.
Newt, do you really think getting poor children unskilled, low wage jobs and getting them to work more is a good idea? Didn't we settle this over 100 years ago with child labor laws and mandatory education requirements? Shouldn't we be emphasizing poor kids education so they can do more than spend their lives at low paying, mostly unskilled jobs? Is this your plan for making America great again? This is a keep the poor poor plan, make them wage slaves to do the work for people like Newt.
@mittcleaver I think Newt's a turd through and through but you misrepresent his position. He's proposing after school jobs for kids that will help them learn the responsibility of showing up for work on time, interacting with others in the workplace, and doing what is asked from an employer. No skills = start at the bottom but along the way they have the opportunity to learn some skills that will afford them better jobs down the line.
@kaysandesses If he's just advocating 5-15 hrs a week for older teens that can handle the work in addition to their homework, chores, etc. & it's truly voluntary then that might be ok. Showing up on time should be learned long before work life begins. Same for social interaction & doing what's asked of you. Sometimes u positively shouldn't do what an employer asks of u! When I got my college degree I leapfrogged over all the "skilled" workers, unfair tho it might have been.
@mittcleaver In this clip (at least), I think that's exactly what he's advocating. Yes, a lot of those skills *should* already be learned, but a large percentage of people don't possess those skills prior to trying to enter the job market as an adult. I know this from a lot of HR interaction with various employers across the U.S. You went to college, I went to college, hundreds of thousands don't have the opportunity.
I typically agree with TPMtv, but not this time. I think Newt's viewport is a little narrow, (i.e. assuming all poor kids are living in mythical welfare havens where no adults work), but he may have a reasonable point to make about getting poor kids into some sort of employment to give them the experience of understanding responsibility in that facet of life. There are a lot of kids who fit the scenario he describes about lack of worker role model.
Children learn those things at school, not working menial jobs for sub-minimum wage. That's precisely why the United States enacted child labor laws and made education compulsory.
@CommanderMantis Huh? I'd like you to explain how children learn the value and responsibility of a job at school? Being on time for class and doing your homework is not the same as being in the workplace. Furthermore, menial jobs for sub-minimum wage are the types of jobs that high-school kids get, because they have no other qualifications. I also didn't hear Newt propose eliminating child labor laws and tossing kids on the factory floor. Just the opposite in fact.
@AVINATION That depends on which one of my comments you replied to. I'm not being sarcastic in my opinion that the only way people learn about good working habits is by working. After school jobs never hurt anyone and that is exactly what it sounds like Newt is proposing., though it's hard to tell from a 36 second video clip.
@AVINATION Not even close. The most productive people I've ever been around professionally are those who began working at a young age (i.e. after school jobs). Some of the poorest performing people I've know professionally are those who never worked until they absolutely had to and in spite of their great performance academically, just don't "get it" in the workplace.
@kaysandesses Newt is not proposing "after-school jobs" he wants to fire unionized janitors and open up little sweat shops around the country. Look at his other statements on this topic. And here never say anything about spoiled little rich kids. it's always about "inner city youth" wonder why? and i've seen the total opposite when it comes to people who began working at a young age. So it really depends on the person. A lazy person is going to be a lazy person either way.
Those are exactly the qualities they teach in school, along with a host of other things . I'm at a loss at being asked to explain this to someone whom I presume is an adult that went through school themselves. I wish there were a more polite way to say that, but there you go.
Newt IS talking about doing away with child labor laws. This isn't the first time he's brought the subject up, and he's been very clear on his desire to do so. He is a prodigious scumbag.
@CommanderMantis You're much more charitable to Newt than I am. I am an adult, I started working after school at age 12, and I have a bachelor's and master's degree. I disagree that children learn direct working skills in school. Even though they are rewarded for accurate timely work and are penalized for tardiness I just can't agree that it's the same. Newt isn't talking about ending child labor laws here, but I have no doubt he has elsewhere. TPM's short vids suck.
i hate this guy. i dont hate many people. but i was really poor got up everyday for school. as a veteran you better not be late for anything while in the army. fuck you newt.
@Bigaphid Newt, like all good Republicans, doesn't like something unless they like it. Just like he used to like public healthcare and now he doesn't. He's a typical GOP flip-flopper. He likes whatever the Corporate Masters tell him to like. He thinks states should have the right to decide on healthcare, but he thinks they shouldn't have the right to decide on other GOP hot button issues like medical marijuana. GOP voters must have a collective IQ that can only be expressed as a fraction.
@DeletedDelusion Yep, and according to the CBO if President Obama hadn't instituted his stimulus plan there would be another 6.8 million people looking for jobs. The GOP goons are happy to have people out of work as long as they get to give their virtual hand-jobs to the Corporate Masters.
I grew up dirt poor with 6 other siblings and I do nothing but try to bust my ass everyday at my job. No matter what kind of job Ive had in the past, Ive always gave it 100% even if it meant working off the clock.
If you are unemployed and refuse to take a minimum wage job, you deserve to be unemployed. If you are unemployed and refuse to take a job for 5$/h if it is available, you deserve to be unemployed. Abolish the minimum wage.
Why don't you try having a plan to create jobs brother? Hey there's an idea. Oh, by the way, 9% of us are unemployed and 16% underemployed. We didn't grow up in "really poor neighborhoods" and we're not lazy, blockhead! Wake up. You got no shot Newt; you are disconnected from America. Go join a corporate board bozo. Don't you have a golf tee time to make?
Newt Gingrich, candidate of the past. Are you f#@king kidding me Newt!? Are you really blaming the poor for their unemployment due to laziness? You backward backwater of the GOP. go find some pasture to graze in you cow.
Holy shit. That is amazing. I can't believe that someone would be so divorced from reality he would say something like that. Isn't he trying to get someone to vote
uh, are you intuiting that my pass was irresponsible or that the woman on the vid was so?
Personally I most certainly believe this woman was clearly not thinking of her children; only what she could get from welfare & those that 'feel' sorry for her
Exactly, if one is unable to care for the children that one may produce then that person(s) should NOT have children
I now have 4 children but I certainly did not do so 'until' I was sure I could afford them!
Is this really the best the Republicans have to offer from the circus act of candidates... If that's the best they got then I guess this is not going to be a race at all, More like a landslide win for Obama in 2012
The douche has a point. We are built by our environment. If all we ever know is poverty that is what we will always attract. We need a balance in society and real education for free. imho
@ultrapirtle None of the people who love him will ever understand that. To them those jobs are exclusively filled with teenagers trying to save up to buy their dad's old mustang
@ultrapirtle that's not necessarily true... really poor children often have no working parents, or are raised by older people living on social security and disability.

@bhstone1 That's it? that's your statement...if he's hear of the working poor, then name calling? lol.
Whats your definition or understanding of a working poor?
CHEKPNT 2 months ago
@CHEKPNT I believe he's speaking about the sudden, bizarre misconception that people who are poor in this country are poor purely because they choose not to work. This is absurd. The working poor are the people who work full time jobs (or even several of them) but cannot make ends meet. Try to live on minimum wage. Try to raise a family on it. I volunteer at a homeless shelter, and half of the people who stay with us have jobs. Can you imagine that?
InformationPollution 2 months ago
@InformationPollution : He is talking about their environment. He recognizes they don't have the opportunities like most of us have. If your grandparents and/or parents depended on the government for mostly everything such as jobs, food, health, school, etc... they in someway have become institutionalize on that dependents and very hard to get out of that dependency. This is not even taking in consideration the cultural such as gangs, drugs, etc.
CHEKPNT 2 months ago
@CHEKPNT He knows nothing about their environment. They say "they have no one around them who work." People in the projects work. They work incredibly shitty jobs that keep them away from their children, in fact. When I was a kid my mother could drop me off and pick me up from school because she worked part time. In the inner city you see nine year olds riding the bus. They're not doing that because their parents have all the time in the world. I see what you're saying but the poor WORK.
InformationPollution 2 months ago
@InformationPollution : Now if your talking about not understanding the projects way of life...yes pretty sure Newt would not understand like...you gotta hustle to survive. I had to hustle myself when I was younger.
But,you don't need to live in the projects to understand the projects problems to find solutions. Now when my kids do become teenagers, am pretty sure they'll think i don't know whats-Up but I know in my opinion, what I need to do for them to succeed in life.

Jack194343 2 months ago 2
@Jack194343 : He refuted all those things...anyways, what your saying is that Newt is nothing like your typical politician? Hmm lol
CHEKPNT 2 months ago 3
@CHEKPNT What I'm saying is that Newt is a classic Republican: a corrupt, lying pile of shit, totally lacking in compassion for ordinary ppl, a slime-ball that has entered politics not to serve the public but to get rich selling his soul to the highest bidder. That he denies being a low-life crook doesn't change that he was found guilty of 84 ethics violations while the Speaker of the House and fined $300,000, nor does it change the fact that he continues scamming while running for president.
Jack194343 2 months ago
@Jack194343 You're Misinformed about David Bonior that brought 75 ethics charges against Newt, 74 which were found to have no merit whatsoever. The last charge, whether Newt funded his college class "Renewing American Civilization" properly the charge was two fold: violated tax deductible and improper tax filing considered "error" Cost him $300k. IRS announced on February 3, 1999, that it found NO IMPROPRIETIES IN THE TAX FILINGS wow that's corrupt, lying, no compassion, slime ball? gzz lol
CHEKPNT 2 months ago 3
@CHEKPNT LIES, LIES, LIES, LIES, AND MORE LIES. Newt Gingrich himself said it best. "Anyone who quotes me, is telling a lie." If a Republican said it, you can be sure it was a lie, therefore if you quote a Republican you are passing on a LIE. FACT: Newt was tried, found guilty, and fined $300,000. Your SPIN on that FACT is a LIE. I'd like to point out that the Republicans had control of the Congress at that time. Newt was tried and found guilty by his own cronies. It wasn't the DEMs.
Jack194343 2 months ago
@Jack194343 Now you sound more like a kid.

Wow!

PairadiceP8nt 2 months ago
@PairadiceP8nt
Let's not conflate issues
1.It's good to teach ALL kids to work
2.Not all people are poor because they lack morality or are lazy
3. Rich kids are more likely to become lazy, but it's less obvious because they can STILL afford university and end up being lazy lawyers instead of lazy drug dealers
4. Newt is suggesting this because he wants to bust up public sector trade unions, not because he gives a shit about teaching kids work ethics
And
5. Newt has absolutely NO ethics

TrollBuster9090 2 months ago
@TrollBuster9090
I learned work ethic because my grandmother died and I couldn't live in her basement anymore.
Considering the amount of time I spent in welfare offices as a child these people are there because they are lazy.

Anybody you would have the morality to work 65 hours a week washing dishes for $20K a year, rather than becoming a criminal (or a "historian") deserves a sainthood.

Its difficult to tell from this short snippet, but is Gingrich not making a case for a Federal jobs program here? Wouldn't that be a progressive policy, a policy for full employment? It sounds like the same type of "employer of last resort" and labour-sharing programs that you see in Germany or Austria.
Tone and stereotyping aside, shouldn't TPMTV be concentrating on this side of the message? Has Newt called for Federal jobs programs before?
OgallalaKnowhow 2 months ago 9
@OgallalaKnowhow
"Wouldn't that be a progressive policy?"
TrollBuster9090 2 months ago
@TrollBuster9090

You are missing my point. I don't give a s**t what Newt thinks. I remember him leaving congress in disgrace in 1998 as well. Germany has some of the best examples of this kind of stuff.

This is a keep the poor poor plan, make them wage slaves to do the work for people like Newt.
mittcleaver 2 months ago
@mittcleaver I think Newt's a turd through and through but you misrepresent his position. He's proposing after school jobs for kids that will help them learn the responsibility of showing up for work on time, interacting with others in the workplace, and doing what is asked from an employer. No skills = start at the bottom but along the way they have the opportunity to learn some skills that will afford them better jobs down the line.
kaysandesses 2 months ago
@kaysandesses If he's just advocating 5-15 hrs a week for older teens that can handle the work in addition to their homework, chores, etc. & it's truly voluntary then that might be ok. Showing up on time should be learned long before work life begins. Same for social interaction & doing what's asked of you. Sometimes u positively shouldn't do what an employer asks of u! When I got my college degree I leapfrogged over all the "skilled" workers, unfair tho it might have been.
mittcleaver 2 months ago
@mittcleaver In this clip (at least), I think that's exactly what he's advocating. Yes, a lot of those skills *should* already be learned, but a large percentage of people don't possess those skills prior to trying to enter the job market as an adult. I know this from a lot of HR interaction with various employers across the U.S. You went to college, I went to college, hundreds of thousands don't have the opportunity.
kaysandesses 2 months ago
I typically agree with TPMtv, but not this time. I think Newt's viewport is a little narrow, (i.e. assuming all poor kids are living in mythical welfare havens where no adults work), but he may have a reasonable point to make about getting poor kids into some sort of employment to give them the experience of understanding responsibility in that facet of life. There are a lot of kids who fit the scenario he describes about lack of worker role model.
kaysandesses 2 months ago
@kaysandesses
Children learn those things at school, not working menial jobs for sub-minimum wage. That's precisely why the United States enacted child labor laws and made education compulsory.
CommanderMantis 2 months ago
@CommanderMantis Huh? I'd like you to explain how children learn the value and responsibility of a job at school? Being on time for class and doing your homework is not the same as being in the workplace. Furthermore, menial jobs for sub-minimum wage are the types of jobs that high-school kids get, because they have no other qualifications. I also didn't hear Newt propose eliminating child labor laws and tossing kids on the factory floor. Just the opposite in fact.
kaysandesses 2 months ago
@kaysandesses you being sarcastic, right?
AVINATION 2 months ago
@AVINATION That depends on which one of my comments you replied to. I'm not being sarcastic in my opinion that the only way people learn about good working habits is by working. After school jobs never hurt anyone and that is exactly what it sounds like Newt is proposing., though it's hard to tell from a 36 second video clip.
kaysandesses 2 months ago
@kaysandesses you said: Being on time for class and doing your homework is not the same as being in the workplace. really?
AVINATION 2 months ago
@AVINATION Not even close. The most productive people I've ever been around professionally are those who began working at a young age (i.e. after school jobs). Some of the poorest performing people I've know professionally are those who never worked until they absolutely had to and in spite of their great performance academically, just don't "get it" in the workplace.
kaysandesses 2 months ago
@kaysandesses Newt is not proposing "after-school jobs" he wants to fire unionized janitors and open up little sweat shops around the country. Look at his other statements on this topic. And here never say anything about spoiled little rich kids. it's always about "inner city youth" wonder why? and i've seen the total opposite when it comes to people who began working at a young age. So it really depends on the person. A lazy person is going to be a lazy person either way.
AVINATION 2 months ago
@kaysandesses
CommanderMantis 2 months ago
@CommanderMantis You're much more charitable to Newt than I am. I am an adult, I started working after school at age 12, and I have a bachelor's and master's degree. I disagree that children learn direct working skills in school. Even though they are rewarded for accurate timely work and are penalized for tardiness I just can't agree that it's the same. Newt isn't talking about ending child labor laws here, but I have no doubt he has elsewhere. TPM's short vids suck.

Gingrich lives in an ivory tower, isolated from the real world, so he fantasizes and then pontificates.

So Newt, how are you going to pay them?
A. Tax the 1%
B: Tax the middleclass
C. Tax their parents How about you think things trough before opening your arrogant yap.

THIS is class warfare

If you are unemployed and refuse to take a minimum wage job, you deserve to be unemployed. If you are unemployed and refuse to take a job for 5$/h if it is available, you deserve to be unemployed. Abolish the minimum wage.

That is why they should go to school.....oh wait Republicans want to cut on education...so they have no good habits at all.

I think Bill Hicks's premonition of a new political party, "the people who hate people party", is becoming a reality.

Holy shit. That is amazing. I can't believe that someone would be so divorced from reality he would say something like that. Isn't he trying to get someone to vote

@Searching4Truth1 thats so irresponsible. Its like why have kids if you cant take care of them?
Sagefrakrobatik 2 months ago
@Sagefrakrobatik
uh, are you intuiting that my pass was irresponsible or that the woman on the vid was so?

We need a balance in society and real education for free. imho
TheDrfoxx 2 months ago
Really poor children usually have parents who work 2 or 3 minimum wage jobs, actually.

Not always the truth
One example

[ I Got 15 Kids & 3 Babydaddys-SOMEONE'S GONNA PAY FOR ME & MY KIDS!!! ]
But, yes, quite a few do have more than one job
Searching4Truth1 2 months ago
@ultrapirtle None of the people who love him will ever understand that. To them those jobs are exclusively filled with teenagers trying to save up to buy their dad's old mustang
InformationPollution 2 months ago
@ultrapirtle that's not necessarily true... really poor children often have no working parents, or are raised by older people living on social security and disability.
