Utter chills at that lock of Catherine Parr's hair. Its hard to think of them as real people so to see that and examples of handwriting. Wow. I would have loved to see it all in person.
Wait, this is the first time i have heard that henry not liking anne of cleve's appearance and claiming to have been deceived by her portrait was a fabrication by historians... every tudor documentary and book i have read always treats this as fact (that henry was disappointed by her looks and felt he was deceived). Is this video correct in saying that henry did not in fact have qualms about AOC appearance??
if someone has more info i would greatly appreciate it!
I am curious about the comments about the looks of Anne of Cleves. Henry said 'I like her not'. (Anne presumably was into fat, ugly men nearly a quarter of a century older.) Could it be his taste only?
@NickAndChase10 Katherine of aragon didn't sleep with other men, all six kids were henrys... She was devout catholic and was loyal to henry, there is no proof that she slept with other men >.>
i have read in a few books that the fifth portrait shown here, is not infact katherine howard, but that the sister of jane seymour. it is obvious to see the likeness of the chin and eyes.
@halyie Actually, it was: stillborn daughter, son died in infancy, son - stillborn or died very shortly after birth, stillborn son, Mary, stillborn daughter.
I had absolutely no idea Ann of Cleves survived Henry and was known officially as 'the Kings sister'! How cold Henry was, not to allow A. B. to be pardoned and live on, like Ann of Cleves. It was particularly nasty also, executing the Chief Musician Mark Smeaton, needlessly smudged out of history simply bcos his mistress fell out of favour with H. The fact Ann of Cleves survived shows that H. cd have been merciful to any of them. Some Kings and Queens can get away with murder (to this day)...
I agree. When he made AB queen. Her position was etched in stone. So the only way he could get rid of her was through the old matrimonial saying, "til death do us part."
There was no way Anne Boleyn could have simply been pardoned and sent to live quietly in the country, Henry had broke with Rome just to be with her, by divorcing her he'd be the laughing stock of Europe. And if Anne was allowed to live, she'd always have supporters.. and Henry had no reason (nor could he) execute AOC
@slessorpr He had the marriage[with AoC] annulled on the grounds of non-consummation; the fact that she was supposedly betrothed to some other man just added fuel to the fire. Obviously, since AB was was pregnant when they got married and gave birth to a girl, they could file for annulment via non-consummation.
@avallonmist She was probably happy to get away with her head still attached to her neck. She got property, money, and a position as "the King's Sister". I think Henry treated her as a friend once he got what he wanted from her.
@happybkwrm You're right and from everything I've read, he actually grew quite fond of AoC and they were very good friends until Henry's death. My personal opinion is that he was just so in-love with Jane that no woman would or could have met his needs at that time. A person does not easily set aside grief; even if it is for the good of a kingdom. I think if he stayed with her, history would be veeeeeery different right now; LOL. Keep reading bookworm! B/B )o(
@avallonmist I don't think he was in love with Jane Seymour. He was attracted to her, no doubt. But the fact that he grieved so much over her is because she bore him a son that lived past the age of three. I read that him and Catherine of Aragon were in love at one point, and same with him and Anne Boleyn, but theirs was more lustful.
Same with him and Katherine Howard. Not too sure about Katherine Parr, though I know he was attracted to her and sent Thomas Seymour away.
@avallonmist H 'loved' J because she gave him a E, why do people still think that H loved her? there is even a story that he orded c section on her after the child was still not born, that means that if its true he sacrificed J for E, ofcourse we dont know that for sure but imagine it, i woudnt put it past him.. if J had lived she would have been his queen for life but only because she bared a boy, if she would have gave him girls just like the other did she would have been easily recplaced
what a great exhibition.! i was lucky enough to see this in person at hampton court palace on the last day it was on display, and although the room got quite crowded and hot, it was really fantastic and unique. i'm glad it's now available for all to see.
@kctbthnd7 Good on you to have seen it. I wonder what artistic inquiry has gone into the portraits (dating them, etc) and attribution. It looks a fine exhibit.
Probably the best summarisation of this subject that I have ever scene.

HUGE Problem! All I can hear is Ave Maria and nothing else! Dial down the background music and dial up the curator's voice!

It was a very political situation at the time though. She couldn't of been allowed to live. She was as much a Politician as a Queen.

He divorced her because he knew he could.
