Rover Meteor, a ground version of the RR Merlin that was used in tanks. It has heavier internal parts and lacks the supercharger. It makes about 600 hp.
Most diesel locomotives have over 10k HP, why won't anyone pray on them? :) The same UAC, maybe even better. But a crude 250-horsepower engine for a sedan is WOW! I love it! What's the catch, really?
@oguretsagressive 10,000 hp for a diesel locomotive is a bit much. The most powerful one that I know of was the EMD DDA40X which made 6600 horsepower using two engines (and 60's technology), and none are left in freight service
Basically a de-rated version of the RR Merlin aircraft engine without supercharging, with some different (heavier) parts and used in tanks. HP was around 650 HP with 1200 lb of torque.
I dont think theyre to rich. The exaust pipes are just so short, and there is such a great amount of air/fuel mixture that some parts of it get burned in the exhaust. Does not mean its to rich. And even if it where, It prob gets the most horsepower that way. They had a war to win after all.
The Meteor was a Merlin without the supercharger, used for ww 2 Cromwell tank. Evidently, it was very fast. Rover built the engine because Rolls Royce wanted the jet engine Rover was building (the original Whittle engine) and in exchange RR gave the Meteor engine building to Rover. A very good deal - both for the aviation industry and for the UK, as RR is about the last, big, world class, high tech manufacturer left in the UK today.
@listepikster Not entirely correct. Some clever engineers made exhaust ejectors to the merlin engine.Gaining 70 pounds-force thrust or roughly 70 hp. This gave the spitfire 10MPH more top speed...
@lgf1978 70hp will not give you 10mph when you are traveling over 400 mph.... Also, hp is a measure of a torque per unit time. Even assuming you mean 70 ft*lbf/s that would be roughly .12hp which at over 400mph will not even make 1mph difference.
@billyjack70 Yes, physics. Interesting topic. It is a known fact that evacuating exhaust gases actually has a high velocity. And makes thrust. Channeling those gases can even increase the flow speed. What do you think are driving turbo chargers?
And you do realize that it is the gases in a jet engine that actually makes the thrust?
@billyjack70 Sorry about that. When people are quick to blow me off i stop the argument before it gets out of hand. Merlin is actually my favorite engine. I read any material i can about it. several times. And in the museum of aviation in Bodø they have a (couple of) merlin. At display and a spitfire. One of the guys working there is a "guru" on merlin engines (to me, at least)...
this enigine is from a aircraft and never ran with a header, the stubs just stick out of the side of the cowling, dont argue the toss about shit u dont know bout, and anyways this is noithing like a 55 chevy apart from the fact it has 12 cylinders
meteor is less quality engine parts than the merlin, which has to be airworthy. The merlin is with added supercharger ( two speed ) later version involved the Griffon series, which added 10 liter in engine capacity.
LOL thats funny i just posed the same question .. i should have read your reply before i posted it. They are naturally asperated.. cuz i looked at that and i said thats a merlin with out the super charger... and now that im typing this ... i remember Meteor.. is a tank cuz i watched a documentory on it ... So dont mind me im just having a brain fart.
Nothing sounds as good as this engine. Some may be better but these engines has the Best Sound of Any Engine ever made.

if you know anything about engines, you'd know torque is what matters on these engines, not horsepower.

@barthoedemaker what is torque going to help you with. hp=rpm=faster prop speed= faster plane

billyjack70 4 weeks ago
@billyjack70 Have you read about the Merlin engine?
You probably should do so....
The exhaust manifolds Are Directed in a rearwards direction.
And the speed of the exhaust exiting the manifolds gives an extra "push"...
Just read the story about the engine.
Or try standing "in the way" of the exhaust of a large engine...

its out of a tank.
the spitfires mostly had supercharged engines apart from early ones I believe although the stubs look to be aircraft ones.

oh and no 55 chevy had 12 cylinders.
