In 1968 we bought a new Fiat 124 four door sedan. It was a good car and had plenty of power for an import during that time. It had a smaller engine than the Datsun 510 and the newly imported Toyota Corona in the US. I know from personal experience this car was faster and handled better than the Japanese counterparts. I guess Russia produced this car for a long time and has made this car a heavy duty car which lasts in harsh weather of Russia and some of the poor roads in the country.

Fiat 124 was introduced in 1966 and was voted car of the year in 1967; Lada bought the license to build them, and named it the ''1200'' ; although the bodywork was made of thicker steel, it looked exactly the same as a Fiat 124.

My mother bought a brand new 1200 in 1987 , normally the second car in our family was a used car but the Lada was so cheap one could buy them brandnew :)
