I just dig a different version of great song and great guitar player in different band. Derek and the Dominos is an appreciation that Bobby is a great keyboard player and singer / songwriter and Jim and Carl are top musicians 2. The sound of EC in this band doesn`t happen without these guys.
I have to side with the people who like it better with Winwood. and when they through in Steve Gadd on drums you truly have a super group. Its still a awesome rock and roll ballad.
@elvishitler thats exactly what i think man! he is amazing in that way. he can make that guitar play any note that pops in his head and it sounds so beautiful.
In the Presence of the lord,,oh that is the name of this song -- What happen Clapton just went crazy with what he does best in these days.In the presence is a great song and time to live in the presence of the LORD
This is one of the best solos Clapton has done--He walks the neck as always but finds a way to make it even better ,,,,,,,GREAT ---Oh I think it is Brrownie--yet moe matters to me --HAVE A GREAT DAY//
blackie, brownie, home to mommie-great guitar and song for sure,I own a remake of Blackie-it is a great guitar-2008 model,,have fun kids ...and God bless.
He built Blackie in 1970 and first used it in 1973 at the Rainbow Concert. It was retired from touring in 1985 (along with Brownie) after a concert in Hartford, Connecticut. That concert was filmed at clips of it are on YouTube, btw.
Guitar Center has Blackie. Paul Allen (cofounder of Microsoft-- I think that's his name) bought Brownie and put in on display in some music museum in Seattle. I forgot the name.
He held two auctions. One in 1999 and one in 2004. Brownie was sold in '99. Blackie and the red ES-335 were sold in '04 to Guitar Center. :p I might be getting the years wrong, but you get the idea.
I disagree somewhat. Alot of his successful songs WERE written by other people, but he has had plenty of his own successful songs, such as Layla, Tears in Heaven, Wonderful Tonight, Bell Bottom Blues, Bad Love, Pretending, just to name a few. So I wouldn't say he isn't a gifted songwriter, because he IS a gifted songwriter and he's been very successful.
Clapton will forever be remembered as one of the great blues musicians of all time, but I never really knew that alot of his songs aren't "his" own songs, many were written by black blues musicians. Such as "Cocaine", "Crossroads" which was called Cross Road Blues by Robert Johnson, i shot the sheriff, knockin on heavens door, nobody knows when your down and out... but his derek & the dominos stuff is by far his best in my opinion. i like the slowhand album & journeyman as well.
Yeah that's what I meant. Cocaine, Crossroads, I Shot the Sheriff, Knockin On Heaven's Door, Nobody Knows When You're Down and Out, aren't his songs. They were written by someone else.
Lol , clap's a guitarist. guitarists play anything that interest them. we are blessed he decided to be interesed in those already made songs and turn them into true greats
NO but I respect your opinion! I live in the SOUTH ,THE HOME OF THE BLUES ,CAN YOU BELIEVE IT TOOK CREAM AND ERIC CLAPTION TO TURN ME ONTO WHAT WAS IN MY OWN BACKYARD?!?!??
I've always preferred Derek & the Dominos but I can't put my finger on why. I must be the worlds only person who thinks they beat Cream, does anyone agree with me?
@OnjiTheCat i think so too. The album "Live At The Fillmore" by The Dominos is in my opinion Eric´s finest moment playing on a Stratocaster and the album showcases the incredible chemistry of the band. It truly is marvellous experience listening to them. I think the deciding factory in superiority over Cream is due to Cream being more about three virtuosos jamming, while Dominos are more like a backing group. I love every album by both of the bands and i only prefer Dominos very slightly.
@OnjiTheCat Not sure they beat them, but I do ussually prefer them. I'm a bass player/singer and carl radle is/was and awesome player, and IMO the best match Clapton ever had to his own sensiblities..

i may say the guitar work is just awesome here...vocals not so much, steve winwood is a very soulful singer, so that goes to the studio version.

the version with Blind Faith seems to have so much more depth! maybe Steve Winwood's trusty Hammond!! still a brilliant number though!

I don't know what you mean by "Slowhand Strat," but during the Dominos days Clapton played a Stratocaster he called "Brownie."

The strat Clapton used in slowhand was blackie which he used from 1975 to about 1984. I think brownie has a better sound though.

its a great combination,. of a talented songwriter/composer
who may have limited guitar or instumental skills..with a guitar maestro like clapton or hendrix, doing things nobody else can do.

Many of his covers also use his own original arrangement. For example, "Crossroads" is very different from Johnson's "Cross Road Blues."
evanguy 3 years ago
Yes I agree. Same with his cover of "Little Wing." It sounds different from Hendrix's version.
