It was done by a winch. There is a machine operated by another member of staff at the other end of the airfield, and it reels in the cable that is attached to the glider, really fast, and that makes it take off. It goes from 0 - 60 in about 3 - 4 seconds. Thanks for watching :)
Normally for the course, we would fly a circuit. But for training purposes, eg stall etc we would leave the circuit to do this sort of stuff. Sometimes the pilots would go for a flight by themselves and to gain altitude they would fly in 'thermals' which are pockets of air that is warmer than the rest, normally found underneath coulds. It all depends on the weather conditions too. Sometimes you could end up flying for more than an hour!
well yeah i know about the thermals and climbinb but usually when we go for familiarization flight we get towed by a plane once we could barely find any thermals and immediately had to land. how high would the winch take you? until yyou're on your own. cause it's kinda a scary. the lowest i was released from a tow plane was 2500 feet i doubt the winch takes you that high so yeah
Yeah a winch is a lot cheaper and a lot more efficient. You can get so many launches doe in one day, good for getting as many people as possible in the air to do all the learning, and pass the course quicker. A winch can get you to about 1000 - 1300 ft roughly, so not as high as you go.
lol sounds like CGI Lorenz on that vid :P

how do you gain altitude then? for eg if you wanted to do a cross country flight or is it only done when you wanna fly a circuit?

i wonder why we don't have that here in canada. it would be so much cheaper than towing gliders with airplanes. saving all that fuel. very smart.

@jackus3991 at our site you can get around 2000ft on a normal day sometimes with a good headwind nearly 3000ft

the waiting for the slack to tension is the worst bit of first solo, amazing thing to do though :)

yeah i suppose it is, but a launch failure on the solo would have been a lot worse! lol :P thanks for watching!
