Vietnam 1970 in country, and everyday could be your last, only your buddies kept you sane. Ivory Pipes, Dew, and M&M's .............you had to be there, Hendrix, Santana, Chicago, and the Free Bird if you made it.
This album belonged to my Dad way back in '71 and i can remember being mesmerized back then and even more so now. It has never lost it's meaning, only increased in significance. Thank you for posting this one, and especially for including the lyrics a special thank you :-)
This is one of my all-time favorites.....and love it just the way you have it posted with the lyrics, excellent :)) Thanks so much for posting! Gin with a grin :)
@typeanoise I don't know exactly where the samples are originally from, samples of children explaining who they believe God to be. Perhaps someone more in the know can offer up an answer.
From one of my favorite albums. This band did a lot of great work, in spite of some of their later work (sorry to those who were into the more commercial GFR, but if you listen to some of their earlier stuff, you'll see what I - we - mean).
no worries, one of my favourites too - I went to see them in 1973 (Hyde Park, London) and it still resonates through me, fantastic band. At one stage I had every single piece of music they recorded - call me a fan I guess.
Peace, food, and shelter is all everyone needs to live here. One world one dream love for every one! This song stimulates those dreams in the 70's....
What a GREAT song; I loved it when I first heard it...and now 40 years later...it's STILL way up on my list of favorite songs. THE WHOLE ALBUM is phenomenal. Whenever I hear this great track, I can remember discovering it. 1972, I was 12 and at my girlfriend's house. I was playing her Dad's albums and could not believe what a great song this was. I played it over and again. It still gives me goosebumps when I hear it. How awesome it is to see other people feel the same way I do about this tune.

My alltime favorite album. I was in the service when it came out; You guessed it, Vietnam. I played the hell out of this song, it gave me peace. BTW, GFR does Gimme Shelter so much better than the Stones... Up Yours big lips !!! Thanks for the flashback %)
I played this Album (and this song in particular) so many times you could heard both sides of the LP at the same time! Screw the "Critics" they're self-important twits who are paid to be CRITICAL! Thanks for sharing one of GFR's most poignant tunes...
Thanks for posting this classic - In my troubled youth I found truth in music, this was one of those special songs that saved my soul...GFR and Steppenwolf ? How are those two bands NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame and Neil fricking Diamond is!!???
Wow!! Got a few chills. Haven't heard it forever. Remember the cover had the story about while at their concert two children were born and someone named their child Grand Funk Railroad. That's what the album cover said. Wonder where that person is today?
This sure takes me back to what was probably the most enjoyable time of my life. The early seventies were sure full of hope and promise. Some of it came true, some of it didn't. Now at the age of 57 I can look back at something I did do right back then and that was listen to Grand Funk religiously. Thanks for the memories.
Thanx to whoever put this together! I get the same goosebumps today as I did 40 years ago listening to this. Grand Funk was a hard rocking band & crowds went wild everywhere they played, & I loved it all. But this song was kinda out of character for them. I allways thought it was one of their best. Thanx again!!

I remember when my daughter was a little girl This is the song I related to her with a promise I would try hard to be good. I wish I could have fufilled that promise. I'm sorry Dawn, thank you for forgiving me as much as you have been able to. I love you then & I love you now.
Picked up the Survival LP in early '72 and wore it out before the year was over. I wore out a second copy and replaced it with the cassette version. Wore out the cassette too! The CD is good, but I'd give anything to have this in vinyl again. Well, almost anything.

I remember being in about the 8th grade. Because of a school fire we had to walk for some classes across the open track field. The Vietnam war was still going on and the National Guard, I think it was,was there for recruiting purposes. There was a tank there and the guys had an eight track playing with the speakers sitting on the tank. Grand Funk Railroad's Survival was playing every single time we walked by for a week. I had the tape myself. Still play the CD today.
i'm not a child of the 60's or the 70's but my parents raised me with the same bricks as they had when they were children and i remember my step father playing this song over and over and it had one of the most powerful impacts on me growing up and changed my perpestive on life during my early teenage years and made me more appreciative of the ones before me
Outstanding job! VictoriaR12, It was from the years 65 to 75 that the world was transformed with music like this and many others. But it did start with the invasion of The Beatles. Yes, the world from a tiny community in San Francisco called Haight and Ashbury. With the help of mind expanding drugs like LSD, did music and lyrics change for that 10 year period. I was proud to be of that generation. I am still here! Spirituality helped too! PEACE and LOVE!!! Sonny!!!
i forgot all about this one, funny how i didn't get the god thing back then. maybe i thought they were talking about santa claus. i'm atheist now. interesting times back then... trying to make sense of vietnam. 68,000 americans and what? a million vietnamese died?
and for what? we lost that war and how many americans have died since "the communists" took over? the answer is zero.
then you/we put the same people back in office so we can do it again in iraq. congratulations.
I gotta agree with you Garazon. I bought this album when it came out in '71 and this is my fave song on it. VietNam was hot and heavy and my neighbors were either getting drafted or enlisting by choice. A good economy = low enlistment. A bad economy = high enlistment. Go figure... I don't see much diff between Nam and Iraq or Afghanistan... Obama and Bush are both telling us the same old lies I heard from Johnson and Nixon...
This song is one of my favorites by this band. i never understood why this album wasn't rated higher. The music, the lyrics, are fantastic!! I remember my older brother playing the 8track in his 68 mustang, and we'd listen to this over and over wherever we went.
Still working on it. I know I heard those words, but still can't remember the title. You watch....one early morning, I'll wake up at 4:00 AM with the song, words and title in my head. Then I won't be able to get them out. I think they call that an 'earworm'. LOL Let you know when I remember.
Thanks for the post garazon...What a great piece of overlooked American music.
Listening took me right back to the week the album came out!! A great look into the deeper side of Mark,Don and Mel...And I would agree, their finest album!
If only our leaders of the day could have sat down and listened to this... things might have turned out differently. Great vocal by Don as well!! TIMELESS!!
Some people roll their eyes at this ? Creative musicians come up with different ideas and even styles . I grew up trying to play Are you Ready , Into the Sun , Heartbreaker, and some of their higher energy , more guitar oriented stuff . I never forgot this tune though .
I can remember the first 8 track tape I bought, It was Grandfunk Railroad Survival Album. I can remember trying to get my Dad to listen to the words of this song, when he heard the music start he told me to turn that D_ _m noise off! This was my favorite song back then! So I made sure Dad wasn't around when I listened to it. The words still have the same meaning as they did 40 years ago. Thanks for posting!
I'm sorry, but this is where someone might be able to answer this. There was a song out at about the same time as this one.All I can remember of it is,See what you've done. You just stoned a man who walked on the water.Hey what's your game. Are ya so good, you can even walk on the water too.I think the chorus was Stop what your doing, and think about the man. It's been a good day.I'ld appreciate any help I could get with this one.Thank you all,Zeke.
@Zeke1950 I'm trying to remember Zeke. I remember, but don't remember the title. I thought about Buffalo Springfield's Hey Look What's Going On...but that isn't it.
This will always remain as one of my favorite songs in all my life..... Also, there are a few long-ago personal memories which always come to the forefront of my mind whenever I hear this song. -- So HEY.... Thanks for posting this.
The last kid sounds like Gary Coleman but it can't be him because Coleman was born in 1968 and this song was made in 1971. Used to smoke some good weed & listen to this album with my friend back in the early 1970s. Always been one of my all time favorites too. Amazing song ! I love it ! Thanks for posting it ; ) Have a good one ( ;
Melanie Safka's " Candles In The Rain", is another good prediction song...she sings about catching the same disease and bleeding inside each other wounds...maybe we could stop it if we held our candles high, high against the rain...this is just to give you an idea how they could see the future thru their songs and i wonder now if they even realise this...
i dont know if many of you ever got so high that all you could was to sit down and listen to what these singers/songwriters were telling you in their music...if you listen well to these singers you could hear every one of them predict the future with their songs,,,not all songs mind you but on alot of them you could see the future.." Ought to make a new world"...New world order..its almost here..go back to your past and really listen and watch the future unfold before your eyes..
I posted a video which includes a song that I did many years ago which I hope that you enjoy. It may feature my corvette in pictures and the song old now but it is 1 of my favorites that we did as a band back some 18 yrs ago. The band may not be together now but I have all the music to live on with me. Hope that you like it.

Wow!! Got a few chills. Haven't heard it forever. Remember the cover had the story about while at their concert two children were born and someone named their child Grand Funk Railroad. That's what the album cover said. Wonder where that person is today?

this is a heavy heavy tune they were the true meaning of the word artists I wouldn't call a lot of people in music today artists

TIMELESS!!

RaisingWar 1 year ago
i dont know if many of you ever got so high that all you could was to sit down and listen to what these singers/songwriters were telling you in their music...if you listen well to these singers you could hear every one of them predict the future with their songs,,,not all songs mind you but on alot of them you could see the future.." Ought to make a new world"...New world order..its almost here..go back to your past and really listen and watch the future unfold before your eyes..
