Batio is much better at technique and his music generally sounds better due to actual patterns that make sense. Yes, both of them do this "wild shredding" thing where some of theirs song like crap and a bunch of non-fitting scales being played back to back in repetitive patterns. For both of them, they get a 0 for that. Batio can play a lot of Paul Gilbert's own music backwards and with two hands on the double guitar. He has demonstrated proficiency to play just about anything.

Personally, I think that MAB's songs are boring. Paul Gilbert plays more difficult and original stuff plus he's the god of painful string skipping licks. Paul has more feeling to his songs. I actually discovered Michael before I knew about Paul. What caught my attention was his INSANE long and agile pinky.

I'd also like to direct attention to Fernando Miyata, a Brazillian guitarist who's 8-finger tapping techniques are superior to any guitarist I've yet seen. I'd also say John Petrucci, Alex Hutchings, Al Di Meola, Alan Holdsworth, and Jason Becker of course! For technique, style, and mastery of all forms of playing (finger-picking, classical, flamenco, etc.) :D

I think Michael Angelo can play a little faster, but PG does more difficult stuff, more original stuff, and has a style and sound. That's what I think. As far as 3-fingered tapping, I just meant that as technically accomplished as MAB and PG are, neither of them can write like EVH. I don't even like anything EVH has done in years and years, but Eruption is still, to this day, the greatest solo I've ever heard. Yes ppl can play it now, but could they WRITE it?

There is before Yngwie and after Yngwie. There is before Edge and after Edge. Very few guitarists rewrite the manual like these guys. MAB's stuff is technically impressive, but I don't think it will last the test of time like Eruption. That's just my opinion though. :)

true, it was revolutionary. however several guitarists have mentioned MAB as a massive influence on their playing, and he had the best selling instructional shred dvd for years in a row. i think MSB will stand the test of time very well, it's very unlikely that he will ever be forgotten. on top of that he has been named the fastest shredder on several lists so, once again it's highly unlikely he will ever be forgotten.

Definitely Paul Gilbert. Gilbert was a master at alternate picking, legato, sweep picking and tapping at 19 years old. Then he became a master at string skipping. The passion and vehemence in his playing is phenomenal. Check out the unaccompanied "Frenzy" for all out shred. He can play faster and Has More melody and emotion than MAB. Don't Get me wrong though MAB is a fucking monster, butpeople think he is the fastest cuz he flaunts his top speed all the time. Gilbert's Vibrato is way better too

I have to go with Paul. He's incredibly versatile in his work, and can do way more than just shred in all of his songs.
