Most of you seeing this probably aren't old enough to remember it but I do. The kick was wide and the officials got it wrong. It happens. Unfortunately it happens to the Browns more than most teams.
I go to Cleveland every year. I consider it my 2nd home. And I am English. Those of you who say the place sucks have obviously never been there.
@gbdawg1 I'm a Steelers fan and was 15 when I watched this game live. I remember being pissed for a moment that the FG was no good. Then I saw all of the Broncos celebrating so I celebrated because naturally I hate Cleveland. That being said they got screwed there for sure.
The ball Did Not "Split the uprights" It sailed wid and went over the top of one of the uprights but by rule it must go through both of them.
It didnt veer off to the right until after it passed between both goal posts. The perspective kinda sucks, but if you watch it carefully several times you can see it. The kick was good.
I was 8-years old and I cried after this happened. But at the time I remembered that it looked like he may have missed it. The quality of this video is terrible so it's hard to really see it on here (I can't even see the ball once it's kicked), but I remember wondering why nobody really seemed to question it on the field. Karlis acted as if he drilled it right down the middle, despite it basically going over one of the uprights and not looking like a sure thing at all.
It's hard to say because of the lighting and angle (I've seen plenty of TDs that looked like they didn't make it, but after it was shown from the side, it was conclusive that they did, which is what you would need).
With that said, let's just say that the refs made a bad call and it didn't go through. What can be done about it? Absolutely positively nothing! That's the name of the game. It wouldn't be the first time this sort of thing has happened, and it most certainly won't be the last.
the kick was good by a couple of inches and the right official who you cant see on this video has the best view of the ball doesn't hesitate to call it good . Elways 98 1/2 yard drive in with about 5 and a half mins left was unbelievable in those conditions
The kick was about a foot inside the post and therefore good. No different than when I saw it 24 years ago. Not that it mattered because the Giants were going to demolish any team they would have faced in Super Bowl XXI.
Have always thought that Karlis missed that kick. Doesn't matter though the Browns had chances to win that game and failed. The 98 yard drive, the fact they couldn't do anything with ball in OT, seeing they won the coin toss and then they couldn't stop Elway in OT. The Browns overall were the better team but not on that day.
MrMking. You're funny. Too all of you, That field goal is WIDE LEFT so learn your directions. Secondly, the ball is CLEARLY OUT NOT in. Karlis missed that field goal so the Browns got hosed again. So yes it is still 25 years later and yes Clevelander's are still stunned that some asshole ref can screw us. So fuck Denver and everything about it. Have Brady Quinn because we have Peyton Hillis.
@MrMking32 You're Browns would have had a fight but would have gotten KILLED BY PHIL SIMS, JOE MORRIS, MARK BAVARO, LT, CARL BANKS, HARRY CARSON, LEONARD MARSHALL, GEORGE MARTIN AND THE O LINE OF KARL NELSON, DOUG RIENSONBERG, AND COMPANY AND THE REST OF THE BIG BLUE WRECKING CREW!!!! The people are good hard working people and very loyal. So STFU!!
painful to admit... but the FB was good. Shame to know that the best team did not win that day. Just the most fortunate one. Today Fans look back to the mid to late 80's and say the Browns were the best AFC team for that half of the decade. Nobody talks about Bronco's being great team... just talk about Elway being great. That was all they were, and that's all they needed. Pisser ! We had a far better team all around, other than QB. And I still liked ours better.

@edwinslow dude the ball goes in at 0:57. Its just really hard to tell from the video. Even if it didnt go in oh well its not the first time shit like this has happened. When your dealing with a team that has John Elway your pretty much gonna suffer heart break anyways haha.
@CMsurvive11 I'm not a fan of either team so as an unbiased opinion, that looked no good. It is suspect how they didn't even show the kick from other angles right off the bat at the end of the game like they did for almost all other field goal winning games.
The truth is that you can't tell from this angle whether the ball missed or went through. The NFL situates an official underneath each upright during field goal and extra point attempts. There's no excuse for the fumble in 1987, Byner was stripped. It was a nice play by Castille. This FG, however, was NO GOOD! I think the refs just wanted the game to end.
its hard to tell.....but it looks like it hooked around the inside pole just above it......better video would prob show it was a good field goal....and i hate the broncos
Anyone who tries to say this field goal is no good is either blind or an idiot. As my dad use to say those refs have the best view possible they are looking straight up, they won't miss that call.
@tswift001 As a lifelong Browns fan I agree. The so-called "dawgs" bark was worse than their bite. The following year loss in Den the Browns 33 pts most ever by losing team in Championship game again blame the bark is worse than bite "dawgs" just wish my fellow C levelaners would see things the same way
@mrad907 I'm from Cleveland and I agree. They had an ok offence but on defence they had no pass rush and no speed at linebacker. And people forget the week before they should have lost to the Jets. Take away Mark Gastineau Roughing the Passer Penalty on 4th an 19 and the Browns arn't even playing this game.
I remember this superb game that marked the arrival of a legendary QB. I respect the Cleavland Browns organization, but the constant bitching, moaning, and crying about bad breaks and officiating, from Browns fans that make it imposable for me to cheer for that team. I've never seen a more effete, whiny fan base.
I remember this superb game that marked the arrival of a legendary QB. (it wasn't a missed field goal btw. Immediately after the kick all the browns were dejected and the stadium went quiet. And I've never ever seen Marty not argue a bad call.) I respect the Cleavland Browns organization, but it's this sort of constant whining, bitching, moaning, and crying like little girls from Browns fans that make it imposable for me to cheer for that team.
This is the first time i've seen that kick since that game was played 23 years ago, and all these years i thought he missed it, but looking at it again, he did sneak it into that left upright by about 6 inches. I cried like a baby after this game.
Um, well, if you look at the play... Webster Slaughter stood and watched the play instead of throwing a block to help Earnest.
The Browns scored 4 consecutive touchdowns on their first 4 possessions of the second half because Byner dominated. Wasn't Byner's fault. The Browns were in that game because of Earnest Byner. Byner went on to have two 1,000+ yard seasons with the Skins under Joe Gibbs+ a SuperBowl championship.
You don't need HD and you don't need a better angle. Anyone who isn't blind can tell this is definitely a good FG. Isn't even close! By the time the ball hooks out it is already several feet past the crossbar!
If the Browns were that much better than the Broncos like the cleveland fans are saying, then why was the AFC championship even close? It was in Cleveland. If a team is that much better then they should protect their home field in a Championship game. Denver kept the super bowl close at halftime but Phil Simms played out of this world. Cleveland would have lost to the Giants too. Cant tell if it was good at any angle. you need an angle over the upright. But dont give up an 98.5 yard drive.
Interesting that Karlis after that kick made 9 straight would be 10 straight after a 46 yard field during Super Bowl XXI then he missed a 20 YARD field goal and and a 37 yarder. That really changed the game with those two misses. I still wouldn't think the Broncos would have beaten the Giants that day. Still, when Elway FINALLY got a running game in Terrell Davis and a defense to help him out that's when Elway got those championships.
as usual, the losing team's fans blame the refs. the team missed tackles, made penalties, gave up a 98 yard drive, turned the ball over, "but it was the refs fault". give me a break!
it always cracks me up how the losing team's fans blame the refs. the losing team misses 50 tackles, turns the ball over, gives up a 98 yard drive, and the fans point to one possible bad call. get a life. your team blew it!
it was clearly NO GOOD, WTF??!! the refs must have been cold and wanted the game over. To this day I still don't get it. Luckily it didn't matter because the Giants pummeled the broncos in the super bowl
@zuzanarox That's right and if the Browns had won they would have been WHOOPED BY MY BIG BLUE. GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 TIME SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!!!!!!!
Yep, it was clearly a miss. Anyone who says differently is a Broncos fan. I always find it amazing how all the blown calls and crazy plays seem to come at the most crucial points in the season.
haha if your still crying over the past you are more than welcome to save us the agony of reading your comments and shut the fuck up sir. Did you ever think that perhaps it was the browns fault to let the comeback happen in the first place and that it never should have came down to a field goal in OT?
At 1:24, I actually had a split second of sympathy for Arthur Modell. Then I remembered how he gutted the hearts of the Dawg Pound and uprooted the original Browns to Baltimore.
And oh yeah, that kick was clearly good. It curled after passing the upright
I'm from Denver and bleed orange and blue, but I give the Browns fans a lot of credit for the standing-O they gave their team (and, presumably, the Broncos) after the game was over. You can hear it on the tape as the Broncos celebrate. Classy.
I remember watching that game and thinking it was no good. I still feel that way. As for the Browns defense that day, I felt they not only played PREVENT defense (prevent a win) but I remember Chip Banks looked slow and ineffective. It looked on most plays he tried a delayed blitz.
Plus old Municipal stadium didn't have the nicest field. It was mostly sand. But they both had to play on it.
I'm a neutral observer, but it looked like the ball started to hook AFTER it crossed the upright. I remember watching this game as a kid. Great stuff. The Giants might have the hardware from '86, but the Broncos and the Browns were the true superstars from that postseason.
if the AFC was so great at this time, how come the giants beat their champions twice during the 13 year superbowl victory drought bertween the los angeles raiders and elway's broncos?
Kick was just BARELY within the left upright - it was good. No apparent protest (if any) from the Browns. I'm also assuming that Instant Review was not yet available.
I remember watching the game - and I remember the kick was clearly in. You can't tell if it was good or not watching this video - because the quality is so poor you can't really even see the ball. But if memory serves me correctly, there was no question. You know, if the Browns were really the better team that day, they wouldn't have let Denver drive 98-and-a-half yards with 5 minutes left to tie the game. You suckers lost. Quit crying about it. It was 23 years ago. Go Broncos!
Another righteous call in NFL history. I'm amazed that people still support the sport with games like this to remember. GO BROWNS DON"T STOP BELIEVING IN CLEVELAND. It's now 2009 and every DOG has his DAY.
@edwinslow I disagree. The Tuck Rule is THE worst call ever. However, the Burt Emmanuel catch is the second worst. I think he actually made the field goal.
@edwinslow Only problem is...the call in the Patriots vs. Raiders game was the correct call according to the rules. It may not have been in the "spirit of the rule".... but it was the right call.
fuck the bullshit my father was at that game he was sitting right where they kick the ball you can see it clear as day the ball was high right (camera angle)of the goal post when the ball is in the air pause it and you'll see it for yourself don't be in denial he missed it and refs. was not even looking at the ball
He missed it period. My dad also was at the game and said many Browns players were celebrating. Oh well though. The coward Modell who painted BRONCOS on his own field made Denver feel right at home.
it's not "pseudo-geniality". I truly do feel for the Browns fans and I can prove it (see "steelertribute . com / ARCHIVES05.HTM" "steelertribute . com / countdown31.htm"). But he did not miss that kick.
As a young kid, I always thought that Karlis did hook the field goal, but after a while I just realized that the camera angle wasn't very good; there's a more definitive view on John Elway's Greatest Comebacks which does indeed show the ball just barely inching through.
This one stung more. They had the lead. 2 turnovers led to 10pts. Prevent defense led to 10. Besides even 'if" Byner gets into the end zone the score is only tied (pending the pat). Elway had more than sufficient time to get into fg range. They were down 21-3,and 28-10. The defense stunk that day. You figure 2 turnovers right off the bat 14 pts, bad defense (80 yd catch, and run Jackson). Then a 20 yd pass to Winder. That is 28 pts. Byner was not the reason we lost in 87.
You are 100% right.I also have wondered why Bill Buckner got so much gtief in Game 6 of the 86 World Series. The score was tied at the time. Bob Stanley and Calvin Schiraldi, who blew the lead earlier in the inning, are the ones who should be getting the heat.
I wonder which game hurt more for Cleveland. This game or the 1987 AFC Championship the following year in Denver when Byner fumbled at the 2 when it looked like he was going to score to give the Browns the lead and possibly the win. It just seemed like Denver had Cleveland's number.
im a steelers fan i got to tell you the browns got screwed that fg was no good. cleveland would of gave the nyg wsh and san fran a way better game then what denver did.hey i know the feeling i suffered threw 4 afc champ gm losses man,the one that hurts the most is san diego in 94 i still cant beleve we lost that gm.
Dude the Browns could have held out against Washington, but I doubt the Browns, Steelers, or any other AFC team in 1989 and 1986 could have hanged with San Francisco in Super Bowl XXIV or the Giants in Super Bowl 21. I'll admit that the Broncos choked in Super Bowl 22 against the Red Skins giving up 35 points in 1 quarter, but the 86 Giants and the 89 49ers were really freaking good teams. And at that time the AFC was the NFC's whore in the Super Bowl.
This should be made required viewing for every citizen of Cleveland, Ohio, every single day of the year...Also, the game in which Jordan put it in Craig Ehlo's eye!!!
i know. i love the browns. it seems like the staduim got louder when they got the field goal. i say its wide though. look at old art modell with his sad face.
I was liquored up at a bar and knew then it was no good. ESPN later extended the uprights on a sportscenter and showed it missed. What do you expect though, it is the Browns.
No they aren't failing you. For some reason Art must have felt the need to make the Broncos more at home by printing their name in the end zone. It was very akward- that is usually reserved for the Super Bowl. When the Browns eventually host another AFC championship game, they better not have the opponents name anywhere on the field.
All I know is the following season, the same two teams played the AFCCG in Denver ("Fumble" game), and "BROWNS" certainly wasn't printed in one of the Mile High Stadium end zones........ I don't recall this ever done at any NFL game other than a Super Bowl.......
It does hook and while it is not clear from the poorer quality video of the day, it is fair to assume it was in fact through the uprights and did not completely hook until it was through.
As a Bengals fan, I must say that is some EPIC BS! That is a missed field goal. I'm not saying the Browns would have scored on the next drive, but the fact that the FG wasn't even speculated by the announcers, proves that the game was FIXED, RIGGED. Just like with the Cavs and Jordan, Cleveland gets screwed by the media or whoever is to blame!
I am a Clevelander who worked out of town for 5 years and I remember that was a close call - in fact I remember some of the Browns players signalling "no good"
This would be the start of the Denver Broncos 3 Super Bowl appearance's in 4 years. And in all of them, they got their asses handed to them from the Giants, Redskins and that lopsided embarrassment from the 49ers.
Looks good to me.
This reminds me of the people saying that Sid Bream was safe...

The following year loss in Den the Browns 33 pts most ever by losing team in Championship game again blame the bark is worse than bite "dawgs" just wish my fellow C levelaners would see things the same way
mrad907 6 months ago
@mrad907 I'm from Cleveland and I agree. They had an ok offence but on defence they had no pass rush and no speed at linebacker. And people forget the week before they should have lost to the Jets. Take away Mark Gastineau Roughing the Passer Penalty on 4th an 19 and the Browns arn't even playing this game.

It was good. Wow, still bitter after 23 years? They had 98 yds to stop the Broncos in regulation. It's their fault for letting it come to that.

Byner went on to have two 1,000+ yard seasons with the Skins under Joe Gibbs+ a SuperBowl championship.

the kick was good... besides whats difference does it make, the Giants would have crushed the Browns in the Superbowl just like the Broncos.
Stacks97 2 years ago
If the Browns were that much better than the Broncos like the cleveland fans are saying, then why was the AFC championship even close? It was in Cleveland. If a team is that much better then they should protect their home field in a Championship game. Denver kept the super bowl close at halftime but Phil Simms played out of this world. Cleveland would have lost to the Giants too. Cant tell if it was good at any angle. you need an angle over the upright. But dont give up an 98.5 yard drive.
shaybird45 2 years ago
Interesting that Karlis after that kick made 9 straight would be 10 straight after a 46 yard field during Super Bowl XXI then he missed a 20 YARD field goal and and a 37 yarder. That really changed the game with those two misses. I still wouldn't think the Broncos would have beaten the Giants that day. Still, when Elway FINALLY got a running game in Terrell Davis and a defense to help him out that's when Elway got those championships.

Classy.
poorjf 2 years ago
I remember watching that game and thinking it was no good. I still feel that way. As for the Browns defense that day, I felt they not only played PREVENT defense (prevent a win) but I remember Chip Banks looked slow and ineffective. It looked on most plays he tried a delayed blitz.
Plus old Municipal stadium didn't have the nicest field. It was mostly sand. But they both had to play on it.
JMB08 2 years ago
I'm a neutral observer, but it looked like the ball started to hook AFTER it crossed the upright. I remember watching this game as a kid. Great stuff. The Giants might have the hardware from '86, but the Broncos and the Browns were the true superstars from that postseason.
MrJulius72 2 years ago
if the AFC was so great at this time, how come the giants beat their champions twice during the 13 year superbowl victory drought bertween the los angeles raiders and elway's broncos?
domirules28 2 years ago
Kick was just BARELY within the left upright - it was good. No apparent protest (if any) from the Browns. I'm also assuming that Instant Review was not yet available.

Yes it was. In fact 1986 was the first season instant replay was in play. It ran from 1986-1991, 1999-Present.

The kick was good, but it was the last win of the year for Denver.
Even if the Browns had won this game, the Giants were the best team in the NFL that season.

Go Broncos!

it's not "pseudo-geniality". I truly do feel for the Browns fans and I can prove it (see "steelertribute . com / ARCHIVES05.HTM" "steelertribute . com / countdown31.htm"). But he did not miss that kick.
steeltribute75 2 years ago
As a young kid, I always thought that Karlis did hook the field goal, but after a while I just realized that the camera angle wasn't very good; there's a more definitive view on John Elway's Greatest Comebacks which does indeed show the ball just barely inching through.
uselessidguy331 2 years ago
This one stung more. They had the lead. 2 turnovers led to 10pts. Prevent defense led to 10. Besides even 'if" Byner gets into the end zone the score is only tied (pending the pat). Elway had more than sufficient time to get into fg range. They were down 21-3,and 28-10. The defense stunk that day. You figure 2 turnovers right off the bat 14 pts, bad defense (80 yd catch, and run Jackson). Then a 20 yd pass to Winder. That is 28 pts. Byner was not the reason we lost in 87.
retroman40a 2 years ago
You are 100% right.I also have wondered why Bill Buckner got so much gtief in Game 6 of the 86 World Series. The score was tied at the time. Bob Stanley and Calvin Schiraldi, who blew the lead earlier in the inning, are the ones who should be getting the heat.
bigdaryle 2 years ago
The ball sailed through and THEN kept going wide. It went through. Watch the browns. They knew it. No protests. Game over.
Sorry, but that's just what happened.
News4usall 2 years ago
I wonder which game hurt more for Cleveland. This game or the 1987 AFC Championship the following year in Denver when Byner fumbled at the 2 when it looked like he was going to score to give the Browns the lead and possibly the win. It just seemed like Denver had Cleveland's number.

Stop the video at 0:41, and read what's printed in the far end zone. I could swear it reads "BRONCOS"..... Right in front of the Dawg Pound......
Music2Die4 2 years ago
No they aren't failing you. For some reason Art must have felt the need to make the Broncos more at home by printing their name in the end zone. It was very akward- that is usually reserved for the Super Bowl. When the Browns eventually host another AFC championship game, they better not have the opponents name anywhere on the field.
edwinslow 2 years ago
All I know is the following season, the same two teams played the AFCCG in Denver ("Fumble" game), and "BROWNS" certainly wasn't printed in one of the Mile High Stadium end zones........ I don't recall this ever done at any NFL game other than a Super Bowl.......

As a Bengals fan, I must say that is some EPIC BS! That is a missed field goal.
