Great speech. I have many videos that explains how air and other components affects nature and humans. Subscribe to my channel and share relate videos, content or comments.
This guy is amazing. We need more scientists like this who can really capture an audience and make them listen.
Stratvic:
"He has crossed the line from scientist to propagandist." That's not exactly a bad thing considering the times we live in. People listen to propaganda. My government (USA) is a perfect example. As is our media.
First nations people also believed that eating you enemies gave you their strength and courage.
For a scientist he has a populist and entirely unscientific language and method of discussing these issues. He uses snake oil sales tactics where the evidence should suffice.
He has crossed the line from scientist to propagandist.
"my grandfather smoked two packs a day his entire life and he lived to the ripe old age of 96. cigarettes cant be all that bad."
Those indigenous folks eat people, therefore they dont know shit.
Granted not everything the indigenous peoples of first nation believe is for us...but it would be foolish to dismiss all ancient wisdom (that could help save the planet) based upon disagreement over something that really isn't even the issue (canabalism isnt the argument here)
Proper examination of the facts and presentation without advocacy through emotive salesmanship is the issue I raised. Scientists cannot and should not become propagandists, scientists to be scientists must deal in facts and supporting those fact with evidence or falsification. Politicians deal in this disgusting display of emotional advocacy not scientists.
In an ideal world yes scientists should stick to facts and remain objective. And perhaps putting his spin on the info makes him a propagandist (though in my biased mind, without the horrible connotations). But I think we've reached a point where scientists NEED to stand up because people don't listen to facts and make logical deductions. The world is at stake here. I'm willing to bend the rules of convention to ensure my grandchildren can go fishing too.
The problem is that scientists need to leave room to be wrong. He fails to do this and falls into what may in time be looked back on as Malthusian nonsense.
For an alternative view that does not deny that global warming is real see:
The guy in the first video (right after the second minute) said "the biggest problem in the world is that we all die..." viewing death as a problem and not as a fact of life (and the natural world) is what created and continues to contribute to the population related issues he listed in that speech. Any solution he has to offer will be based off that underlying belief and will never lead to a resolution. I think it's more dangerous to give people false hope than to tell them what Suzuki does.
Reality is nature, we will all die. His point was not to prevent dieing but to improve quality of life. You may disagree with that objective but even if you changed the objective the logic as to how to achieve that might require a different focus.
I saw basically this same speech in 2004 at my university after I read "The Sacred Balance." It's a real eye-opener but at the same time it's a real downer that makes you feel helpless.
I was just talking to a friend today about how people are worried about the economy because we didn't spend much more this holiday season than we did last year, yet we did still spend more. All I could think of was Suzuki's speech and what exponential growth will eventually lead to.
amazing speech, we should watch what we do, but watch our government more, war is the greatest polluter, the us government dumped over 50million barrels of nerve gas into the ocean and not in a controlled manner and thousands of dolphins and whales have died because of it already from the leaks, but what is scary is the fact that most of it hasn't even leaked out yet but probably will shortly and it wont be dolphins next time it will be us

GRATEFULLY WE CAN CORRECT MUCH OF THIS BY USING THE SCIENCE AND THE SACRED STORIES TO AWAKEN OUR COMEUNITIES

its too bad most people who watch this are already enviromentalists -- it's hard to reach the masses

Are you serious. Watch the BBC. They are indoctrinating their population and the world they reach non stop.

I've seen a couple of polls of the British public that say even more of them doubt our mark on the environment than Americans do.
Mass-extinction and a nasty dirty future and millions of people still hate the people who want to save the Earth..

Wow. That was powerful stuff. We need more people like David Suzuki who speak rationally yet passionately and hit people on a personal level.
