It's a beastly laptop, for sure.

Before I upgraded, I had the Alienware Area 51 M15x. I had to replace it in less than a year because the case snapped in half. Cheap built computer...I really like the XPS M1730. Could probably compare to my M17x. We'll see.

nice, got mine on thursday, 9800Gt sli, 2.5ghz duo and 6gb RAM, really powerful laptop, can play fallout 3 on ultra setting =), but dont get your hopes up too much that you will get it before 27th, mine got delayed twice, took a month and 2 weeks to get to me, well thats if ur from uk, otherwise u should be fine.

Light colours can be changed in speaker grills and touchpad.

The light on the top lid is white - it cannot be changed. Instead you purchase a coloured top panel, rather then a coloured light.

I just ordered a bargain M1730 from the Dell Outlet, cancelled order. It's a T9300 2.5 Core 2 Duo, 4gb ddr, twin Nvidia 512mb 8800gtx gfx cards in SLi, twin 250gb 7,200rpm hard drives - in RAID 0 I think with free fall sensors, Blu-Ray drive, 1920 screen w/2.0mp camera, Vista Ultimate, 3 years NBD onsite warranty, bluetooth and all the usual things as well :-)

Should be here in a couple of days, any tips or things I should do before I get going? It's a Sapphire Blue one as well :-)

Do you happen to know whether 32 and 64 bit versions have different CD Keys? Will I be able to install 64 and use the CD Key off of the sticker on the bottom, on a laptop that came with 32 installed (my M1330 in this case)? I've been wanting to make it 64 to make use of the RAM etc, but I want to know if I can use the CD Key I have first.

The lights in the top lid are white - on all M1730 models. You can change the colour of the LEDs when it comes to the touchpad, speaker grills, etc.

Nevertheless, you do have a DVI output, and Dell supplies a DVI to HDMI cable, so you can still connect to HDMI TVs etc, with full HD output. The only drawbck is that the cable wont carry sound, so you need to a seperate cable for sound :(

My XPS M1330 has a HDMI output, and is much easier to connect to external displays etc. Videos on the XPS M1330 coming soon!!..........

The first time you start up, the BIOs fully loads everything. Same as when you make a change in the BIOS - it takes longer to load as it goes through each setting etc. After the initial load, it goes through much quicker, as normal.

This thing is heavy, look at the thickness of it. I think this would be a replacement for a Desktop PC; as it's very bulky yet powerful. I don't think you'd be carrying this around on a plane or something...

The brightness gets round that issue. If you have it in direct light, then yes its annoying. But under normal light its perfectly fine to use.
